Deuteronomy 15:15-17 Being a slave of Christ means we submit to Him, we have great affection for Him, we are identified with Him, we are obligated to Him.
2. Deuteronomy 15:15-17 You shall
remember that you were a slave in the
land of Egypt, and the LORD your God
redeemed you; therefore I command you
this thing today. 16 And if it happens that
he says to you, 'I will not go away from
you,' because he loves you and your
house, since he prospers with you,
17 then you shall take an awl and thrust it
through his ear to the door, and he shall
be your servant forever. Also to your
female servant you shall do likewise.
3. I WANT TO BE A SLAVE
A. Exodus 21:2-6 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he
shall serve six years; and in the seventh he shall go
out free and pay nothing. 3 If he comes in by
himself, he shall go out by himself; if he comes in
married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his
master has given him a wife, and she has borne him
sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall
be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
5 But if the servant plainly says, 'I love my master,
my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,'
6 then his master shall bring him to the judges. He
shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost,
and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and
he shall serve him forever.
B. Deut 15 & Exodus 21 describe the responsibilities of
slaves and masters pertaining to the year of jubilee.
C. After 6 years of slavery the slave was to be set free.
4. I. THE SUBMISSION OF A SLAVE
A. Deut 15:16a “I will not go away from you.”
B. Exo 21:5b “I will not go out free.”
C. The decision of the slave. He was free.
Consequences.
D. Mankind is free to do what he wants. But there
are consequences to his choices.
E. Jesus made the decision to become a slave -
Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which
was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the
form of God, did not consider it robbery to be
equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no
reputation, taking the form of a bondservant,
and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being
found in appearance as a man, He humbled
Himself and became obedient to the point of
death, even the death of the cross.
5. I. THE SUBMISSION OF A SLAVE
F. The decision to become a slave of Christ.
1. There are many people today who claim
to belong to Jesus.
2. Yet their lives are direct contradictions of
what He has commanded in His Word.
3. The slave of Christ is one who lives with
an eternal perspective rather than an
earthly one.
G.The slave lives for the master - Luke 9:23
Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires
to come after Me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
6. I. THE SUBMISSION OF A SLAVE
H. The master always come first - Luke 14:26 "If
anyone comes to Me and does not hate his
father and mother, wife and children, brothers
and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot
be My disciple.
I. The will of the master comes first - Matthew 7:21
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,'
shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who
does the will of My Father in heaven.
J. Jesus makes it clear that becoming a slave to
Him requires submission. Have you done that?
K. 1 Corinthians 6:19b-20 … you are not your
own? 20 For you were bought at a price;
therefore glorify God in your body and in your
spirit, which are God's.
7. II. THE AFFECTION OF A SLAVE
A. Deut 15:16b “Because he loves you and your
house.”
Exo 21:5a “I love my master, my wife, and my
children.”
B. The Hebrew slave who chose to remain with his
master did so out of love. The master cared for
the slave and treated him well.
C. There are only two choices for us. Slaves of
Christ or slaves of Satan - Romans 6:16 Do you
not know that to whom you present yourselves
slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom
you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of
obedience leading to righteousness?
8. II. THE AFFECTION OF A SLAVE
D. We are slaves either way. The difference is in the
master.
E. Serving Christ is far better - Romans 6:20-
23 For when you were slaves of sin, you were
free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did
you have then in the things of which you are
now ashamed? For the end of those things is
death. 22 But now having been set free from sin,
and having become slaves of God, you have
your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting
life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
9. II. THE AFFECTION OF A SLAVE
F. Being a slave of Christ is not a difficult
task when you consider all that He has
done for us.
1. He has delivered us from bondage,
2. secured our salvation and given us a
new life.
3. He has provided us with eternal life and
promised us a home in Heaven.
4. He is our refuge in times of trouble.
5. He provides for us daily.
6. We have a close intimate relationship
with Him.
10. III. THE IDENTIFICATION OF A SLAVE
A. Deut 15:17 “then you shall take an awl and thrust it
through his ear to the door.”
B. Exo 21:6 “He shall also bring him to the door, or to
the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear
with an awl.”
C. This ceremony signified the slaves' submission to
his master.
D. Our public confession and baptism is what signifies
our becoming slaves of Christ. - Romans 6:3-4 Or
do you not know that as many of us as were
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His
death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through
baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised
from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we
also should walk in newness of life.
11. III. THE IDENTIFICATION OF A SLAVE
E. Our life then becomes a public testimony
of our being His slave - Romans 12:1-2 I
beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that you present your
bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
to God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind, that you may prove what is that
good and acceptable and perfect will of
God.
12. III. THE IDENTIFICATION OF A SLAVE
F. When someone examines your life, when they
see how you live... they should immediately
know "that man or that woman belongs to Jesus
Christ.
1. Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.
2. Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without
complaining and disputing, 15 that you may
become blameless and harmless, children of
God without fault in the midst of a crooked
and perverse generation, among whom you
shine as lights in the world,
13. IV. THE OBLIGATION OF A SLAVE
A.Deut 15:17b “and he shall be your servant
forever.”
B.Exo 21:6b “and he shall serve him
forever.”
C.When the Hebrew slave made the decision
to remain with his master this was a
lifetime commitment.
D.His life was a life of consistent service to
his master!
14. IV. THE OBLIGATION OF A SLAVE
E. As Christians we are to be committed to serving
Christ till death.
1. Revelation 2:10 Do not fear any of those things
which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is
about to throw some of you into prison, that you
may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten
days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you
the crown of life.
2. Revelation 12:10-11 Then I heard a loud voice
saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength,
and the kingdom of our God, and the power of
His Christ have come, for the accuser of our
brethren, who accused them before our God day
and night, has been cast down. 11 And they
overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by
the word of their testimony, and they did not love
their lives to the death.
15. DO YOU WANT TO BE A SLAVE?
A.People want what Christ has to offer
1. They want to be delivered from their
sins.
2. They want to be rescued from hell.
3. They want to inherit eternal life.
4. They want to possess a home in
Heaven.
5. They want to be able to call on Jesus in
times of trouble.
6. They want the privileges but they refuse
to surrender completely to Him.
16. DO YOU WANT TO BE A SLAVE?
B. These are people who want to profess Jesus, but
they want to continue to live life their way.
1. They want to go where they want to go.
2. They want to do what they want to do.
3. They only want to serve Jesus when it is
convenient for them.
4. That is not the life of a slave, that is the life of a
spoiled brat!
C. As slaves of Christ we are required to serve Him!
1. Too many people want the benefits of a
relationship with Jesus without serving Him.
2. It doesn't work that way.
3. John 14:15 "If you love me, keep my
commandments.“
17. DO YOU WANT TO BE A SLAVE?
D.If we are His slaves, we should have the
mindset of the Hebrew slave.
1. We are to submit to our Master.
2. We are to love our Master.
3. We are to be devoted to our Master.
4. We are to be identified as slaves of our
Master
5. We are obligated to serve our Master.
