Emeli Sande is a British singer and songwriter born in 1987 in Sunderland, England. She began writing songs at age 11 and studied medicine in university but left her fourth year to pursue a music career. Her breakthrough came in 2011 with her hit single "Heaven" and debut album Our Version of Events which reached number one in the UK. Since then, she has won several awards including 3 Brit Awards and 4 MOBO Awards for her music and contributions to the industry. She is currently working on songs for her second studio album planned for 2014.
2. Background:Emeli Sandé was born in Sunderland, to a Zambian father, Joel
Sandé, and Cumbrian mother, Diane Sandé-Wood, on 10
March‟87. She study a 6yr medicine at the University of
Glasgow, but she stopped in her fourth year. She has stated
that education was one of the most important things to her,
because, if her music career failed, she would have something
to fall back on. Further, Sandé said that her manager, Adrian
Sykes, waited patiently from when she was 16; "Adrian really
respects that I want to get an education behind me. He also
knows my parents are keen that I finish university". Sandé
wrote her first song at age 11, for her primary school talent
show. She remembers "That was the first time I thought I
might be a songwriter. I always knew I wanted to be a musician
and I knew I wanted to write because the people I was
listening to all wrote. I never thought it was an option to sing
anyone else's songs. The first song she wrote was called
"Tomorrow Starts Again" – the song had proper structure and
even a middle eight. Choice FM invited the 15yr old to London

3. Career Begins
2008 - 2010:
Sandé's sister sent a video of her playing the piano and singing,
"Nasty Little Lady“ to Trevor Nelson's BBC Urban music
competition. She won the show and was offered a record deal,
but the management decided against the deal. Her parents sent
BBC Radio 1Xtra a CD of her songs. Ras Kwame played on her
"Homegrown Sessions", and 4 artists that year were asked to
do a show in Soho. She met with Watford-born music
producer/writer Shahid Khan aka Naughty Boy, and began
writing tracks for artists such as Professor Green and Tinie
Tempah. She soon signed a record deal with Virgin Records and
EMI Records. In an interview, she said "I was doing a show in
London for 1Xtra and I met this guy called Naughty Boy. We got
in the studio and we clicked work wise. We just started writing,
not necessarily for me, we just thought „let's write a pop tune‟
and experiment. And we wrote the Chipmunk track and I

2011 - 2013:Sandé 1st solo single would be released in early „11. Some speculation
surrounding what track she would release, after newspapers stated
"Daddy". 1st official single from debut album was "Heaven" and was
released on 14th Aug.‟11. The song has received positive reviews from
blogs. Confirmed that "Daddy" would be the 2nd official single released
from Our Version of Events. She achieved her 1st No.1 single on the UK
Singles Chart after "Read All About It" entered at number-one. 26th Nov,
performed at the LG ARENA in Birmingham for BRMB‟11. 15th Dec‟11,
named Brit Awards Critics' Choice for „12. Our Version of Events reached
No.1 in the UK after its release in Feb‟12. Debut album includes songs
written by her and has been reviewed as having "richly melodic,
classically powerful, retro-futurist soul-pop songs.“ Announced she was
up for another BRIT Award‟12 (British Breakthrough Act). Wrote material
for the original line-up of Sugababes. 24th Jan‟12, Sandé performed a
one-off gig XOYO, London. Was supported by Michael Kiwanuka.
Recorded a version of "Titanium - David Guetta" the pair performed NRJ
Music Awards, France. Sandé has penned a track for Naughty Boy's
"Hollywood - ft. Gabrielle”. It is about fame coming and going and will be
released in Nov. 27th Jul‟12, sang "Abide with Me" at opening ceremony

Album 2013:
In May‟13, she performed at the White House in Washington,
D.C., as one of the featured artists at the award ceremony
when President Obama presented Carole King with the Library
of Congress Gershwin Medal. From Jun‟13, Sandé will be writing
for second upcoming studio album, which is slated for release
in summer 2014. She has already written several songs called
"Pluto", with Naughty Boy, "Enough", "Call Me What You Like",
