1. Risk Assessment: HARLOW BOWL
Potential Hazards:
Precautions:
Use of the heavy bowling balls – could cause
damage to equipment or poses a health and safety
risk to cast and crew.
Ensure that the cast use the bowling balls that are a
weight suited to them. Ideally they should use the
lighter, smaller balls. They also need to ensure that
they hold and throw the balls in the correct way.
The cast and crew not involved also need to stand a
suitable distance away from the action to prevent
coming into contact with the ball. Wear suitable
shoes i.e. the supplied bowling balls.
Make sure all cast and crew know to keep their
hands and loose clothing away from the mechanics
of the machine, which can clearly be seen
revolving. They also need to keep their hands clear
of the balls as they resurface and preferably take a
ball from the back where fingers can’t get crushed.
Also ensure that nobody sits on the machinery.
If the facility becomes busy with customers, then
there is a risk of equipment being knocked over and
damaged. To prevent this, film on location during
less busy periods i.e. during the weekday whilst
most people would be at work or school. If possible,
also book two back-to-back lanes to ensure we only
occupy the filming space. Do not leave equipment
unattended.
If people like this are present during filming, ask to
be placed at a lane furthest away. Any suspicious
behaviour should be reported to the facility staff
before anything gets out of hand. Ensure that all
equipment not being used is safely packed away
and kept with the group. All cast and crew should
stay together and ignore any comments aimed at
Fingers (or other possible body parts or clothes)
getting caught in the machinery (the Resurfacing
Machine [where the balls are brought back up once
they have been thrown down the lane]). Fingers
potentially being crushed between balls as they
resurface.
Busy periods of large groups interfering with
equipment could lead to breakages.
Misbehaving crowds/customers within the facility.
The bowling alley also features a bar, and is a
popular location with teenagers and young adults
during the evening. If filming during this period,
there is a risk of crowds acting inappropriately,
raising the risk of cast or crew being hurt or
damaged equipment.
Emergency Procedures:
If any member of staff is injured (i.e. the ball
dropped on their foot) seek appropriate first
aid immediately. If any equipment is damaged,
contact Paul/the college to inform them of the
breakages.
Inform facility staff immediately to turn off the
power if fingers or clothing gets caught. First
aiders at the facility will then treat the injury if
there is one. Inform Paul/the college if any
major incident occurs.
If any of the equipment is damaged, contact
Paul/the college immediately to inform them
of the situation. If equipment goes missing or
gets stolen, inform facility staff/security at
once, and then contact Paul/the college to
inform them.
If, for instance, a fight breaks out, leave the
building swiftly, ensuring that everyone stays
together and all equipment is secured properly.
If a member of cast or crew is injured, inform
facility staff immediately and take out
appropriate first aid – minor injuries can be
