A good man is hard to find
Critical Essay #1
A Closer Look Into
"A Good Man Is Hard to Find"
By James ENC–1102
The short story I chose for my critical essay is a story that caught my attention with a gentle and
inspiring title and as I began to turn pages it suddenly evolved into a theme that caught me off
guard and I quickly became intrigued by elusive style of writing the author used to express this
story in a unique form of literature. After reading Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to
Find", I will discuss the vivid historical and cultural context the author revealed to the story's setting
in relation to its style and how the main character is exposed to different parallels of what she
considers to be a good man in time that is dealing with...show more content...
The relation between the definition of Southern Gothic Literature and the historical context and plot
which the story contains is almost identical in characteristics and perfect placement by the author to
give the story a sense of significance where it is relevant in all elements.
While researching this short story you complete a close reading you come to recognize the close
details that come to expose a theme that is elusive and shows different parallels of what Grandma
considers being a good man within different parts of the story. In order to bring further
understanding I am going to give you a brief summary on the short story.
The story begins in Georgia in the 1940's–1950's with the Grandma as the main character who is
trying to manipulate her son named Bailey and his wife from traveling to Florida because of the
danger of a man called The Misfit who has escaped from prison and instead tries to persuade them
to travel to Tennessee. Eventually, the Grandmother doesn't succeed at convincing him to travel to
Tennessee so both of them head off toward Florida along with Bailey's wife, their young daughter
June, their eight year old son John Wesley, the young baby, and Gandmas cat. They drive for a
while and Grandma talks to her granddaughter of her early days when she was a maiden

Best Ways To Study Essay
Three Best Ways to Study For many students studying for an exam or a test can be very stressful.
For a lot of them studying is very hard because sometimes most of the materials they study, they
don't remember on the actual test or exam. However there are more than one way to study and
most theses studying methods can be very helpful and very reliable. A Lot of students tend to cram
all the studying two or the night before the test and according to UCLA professor of psychiatry
Andrew J. Fuligni (2012) cramming and trying to get as much information in your head two or a
night before the test is very counterproductive. How to study properly Although there are many ways
and methods of studying whether it be scientific or a family belief ,...show more content...
A second method of studying is by studying in an appropriate setting (Chadron State College).
Studying in an environment where distraction is very easy to find is very difficult. Studying in a
quiet setting with a lot of space away from distraction can help you study and can help memory
performance. With this setting it's also helpful to be consistent with the studying, studying at the
same time and same place is very effective especially when this is done 2 –3 weeks prior to the test
quiz or exam. With the proper setting, proper setting is also necessary. " Your study desk or table
should be equipped with all the materials you might need to complete the assignment, e.g., pencils,
pens, erasers, paper clips, stapler, dictionary, snacks, and liquid refreshments, etc." – Chadron State
College. Adding items that can help you study and removing things that might distract is also need
for effective studying. The third and final method of studying that is effective is studying while
listening to music. According to Goodwin (2015), studying with music before a test can improve
attention and can help lessen depression and anxiety. The "Mozart effect" is known to be helpful
but of course today the effects will be very different since students don't tend to listen to Mozart.
The type of music played also plays a pig role of studying. Studying with music that has lyrics is not

Example Of Search Strategy
Search strategy Three data bases were used to collect the data, namely, One Search, CINAHL and
ProQuest. These data bases were searched for the terms such as 'cardiac rehabilitation', 'quality of
life,' 'benefits', and 'CHD'. Inclusion criteria were qualitative articles, written in English and
published between the years of 2010 and 2017. Quantitative articles and articles written in
non–English languages are excluded from this study. Moreover, this study focused only on adults,
therefore the paediatric studies are also excluded from this study. After applying the inclusion and
exclusion strategy, 12 articles reported qualitative study regarding the topic and they are used in this
essay. Data analysis Braun and Clarke (2006) developed a...show more content...
1.1a ExercisePhysical inactivity is one of the modifiable risk factor for the coronary heart diseases
(Devries et al, 2011), and therefore exercise is used as an integral component of the primary and
secondary prevention in reducing mortality and improving the quality of life. Upon reviewing the
literature, the author found that, patients' perspective about physical exercise differs widely. In their
study Holder et al (2015) found that, the increased awareness of the mortality after the cardiac event,
help the patients to change their outlook towards life and this further help them to realise the health
benefit of exercise. In addition to that, some of the patients claimed that, exercise helped to divert
their mind and thus helps them to cope with the condition (Holder et al, 2015). Moreover, the
current cardiac rehabilitation programme, made the patients aware of the health benefits of exercise
and, therefore they were motivated to continue the exercise (Hillsdon et al, 2013; Morken et al,
2013). Exercising in a safe environment, under the supervision of the trained staff increases the
confidence of patients in participating exercise (Morken et al, 2013). The study also found that, the
patient increases their self–confidence level in performing exercise, after seeing the health
improvements in the former cardiac patients (Morken et al, 2013). Furthermore, Back et al (2017)
carried a further study to evaluate

My Reflection Of Art
Art has been something that I have always enjoyed. Whether it be actually creating my own
pieces or admiring pieces from local artist, it has been a passion of mine very early on in my life.
Now before taking Art 102 I never really attempted to dive in deep to the pieces I was admiring; I
never really "decoded" any of the pieces, really. Instead, I would simply snap a quick photo, add a
dark filter that really made the reds stand out, and write a witty quote. This has been my cycle when
walking into any exhibit for the past years; find the most visually appealing work of art and spend
more time on posting the piece on social media than actually interpreting what the artist was trying to
portray. Going through the semester I have learned...show more content...
Charles Graner and his team are the ones responsible for such actions and are responsible for the
photo. When Graner and his team were exposed by Joe Derby, the entire world took note and
there was not only outrage on Graner's part but on Derby as well for betraying his fellow
American military. Copper Greene not only borrows the photo but iPod billboard as well and in
a sense does a spin off creating his unique piece with his own message. The reason why we as
individuals are able to make the connection of Greene's piece to Apple's advertisement is because
the idea of signifier and signified. Where in this case the we take the signifier which is the bright
loud colors with the a dark figure used in Greene's work and we translate that to the signified;
which is apple products. In short, bright loud colors with dark figure equals apple products. Greene
also uses bricoloage to create a sense of representation as he is using his platform to highlight the
real world and those real issues. In this case, that being of American Military personal using strong
forms of interrogation. Looking at the piece closer and decoding what the white headphones truly
mean, we can conclude that those headphones not only serves as electrical wires used for torture but
too Americans use those some head phones to shut out the outside world and any real problems,
isolating themselves to their tunes and their own problems. The

Myself As An Artist
I am a artist. A artist is a person who enjoys practicing there creativity though a range of different
mediums on different types of canvases, no matter the skill set of that person. When you hear the
word artist you think of a person who draws, and paints every chance they get because they love
the idea of creating something new. But when I think of myself as an artist I don't see that I see a
person who loves to paint and draw, well draw mostly, but only because she is doing it for other
reasons like for a grade or something. In my case it is for a grade. Every since I have been taking
an art class i have learned to put my creativity into a piece of art that I have to turn in to a teacher.
I no longer fine myself drawing or scathing in my free time anymore like when I was a little kid.
Now I draw because I have to. Even though I do see myself as an artist, I don't feel like one
sometimes. I mean what is the definition of an artist anyway? Is it a person who sits and draws
all day because they love it or some one who is supposed to draw or paint for the fun of it, for the
enjoyment that you like to create something beautiful. For instance, I had showed my cousin
some of my art work and she said that I was really good and that I should go to an art school when
I'm older but I caught myself thinking that why did I even create those pieces, would I still have
made those pieces if I weren't getting graded for them. When she had said that it brought back
memories of me when I was

Essay on The Meaning of Life
The Meaning of Life
My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from
which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there
can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned
above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not
to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there
is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define
life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so.

Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or
great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life
meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or
her role."
At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its
catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have
become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in
any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62,
'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident
is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide
range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in
humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be,
laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored.
Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those
emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in

A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Annotated Bibliography
Working Thesis: In "A Good Man is Hard to Find", O'Connor uses the corrupt, manipulative
character of the grandmother, as well as the story's plot and theme in order to emphasize the flaws of
the church and the need for grace.
Fitzgerald, Sally. "On Faith." Letters of Flannery O' Connor, The Habit of Being, edited by Sally
Fitzgerald, Macmillan, 1988, page 90.
In this print source, O'Connor explains how her Catholic faith influences her writing in a positive
manner. She also explains her views on the importance of the church, as well as its positive and
negative actions and consequences. She claims that one must cherish the world while they struggle
to endure it. Sally Fitzgerald studied briefly at Stevens...show more content...
"A Good Man is Hard to Find." Short Stories for Students, vol. 2, Gale, 1997, pp. 97–114.
This article from the SCC database explains that O'Connor sought to present a message of God's
grace and presence in everyday life. It then provides a basic summary of "A Good Man is Hard to
Find". The article continues, going into an in–depth characterization of the grandmother and how she
ultimately dies having transcended into grace. The article's author and editor, Kathleen Wilson,
is a professor of history and cultural studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
She was educated at Yale University and has been awarded fellowships from a number of
foundations. Even though the article was published in 1997, it still holds up, as it is analyzing a
story that has already been written and will not change. There is no evidence of bias, as it is a
simple analysis and summary. This source came from Short Stories for Students, which was
published by Gale Publishing. Gale Publishing is reliable and unbiased, as they are an
educational publishing company that has been publishing works since 1954. There are a few
cited sources for this secondary source, one of which is biased. The biased source is a New York
Times Book Review, which is biased in favor of the story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find". This
source will be useful in describing the grandmother's character and analyzing her connection to
spirituality in the first body paragraph. It also helps to connect

In their study Holder et al (2015) found that, the increased awareness of the mortality after the cardiac event, help the patients to change their outlook towards life and this further help them to realise the health benefit of exercise. In addition to that, some of the patients claimed that, exercise helped to divert their mind and thus helps them to cope with the condition (Holder et al, 2015). Moreover, the current cardiac rehabilitation programme, made the patients aware of the health benefits of exercise and, therefore they were motivated to continue the exercise (Hillsdon et al, 2013; Morken et al, 2013). Exercising in a safe environment, under the supervision of the trained staff increases the confidence of patients in participating exercise (Morken et al, 2013). The study also found that, the patient increases their self–confidence level in performing exercise, after seeing the health improvements in the former cardiac patients (Morken et al, 2013). • 4. My Reflection Of Art Art has been something that I have always enjoyed. Whether it be actually creating my own pieces or admiring pieces from local artist, it has been a passion of mine very early on in my life. Now before taking Art 102 I never really attempted to dive in deep to the pieces I was admiring; I never really "decoded" any of the pieces, really. Instead, I would simply snap a quick photo, add a dark filter that really made the reds stand out, and write a witty quote. This has been my cycle when walking into any exhibit for the past years; find the most visually appealing work of art and spend more time on posting the piece on social media than actually interpreting what the artist was trying to portray. Going through the semester I have learned...show more content... Charles Graner and his team are the ones responsible for such actions and are responsible for the photo. When Graner and his team were exposed by Joe Derby, the entire world took note and there was not only outrage on Graner's part but on Derby as well for betraying his fellow American military. Copper Greene not only borrows the photo but iPod billboard as well and in a sense does a spin off creating his unique piece with his own message. The reason why we as individuals are able to make the connection of Greene's piece to Apple's advertisement is because the idea of signifier and signified. Where in this case the we take the signifier which is the bright loud colors with the a dark figure used in Greene's work and we translate that to the signified; which is apple products. In short, bright loud colors with dark figure equals apple products. Greene also uses bricoloage to create a sense of representation as he is using his platform to highlight the real world and those real issues. In this case, that being of American Military personal using strong forms of interrogation. Looking at the piece closer and decoding what the white headphones truly mean, we can conclude that those headphones not only serves as electrical wires used for torture but too Americans use those some head phones to shut out the outside world and any real problems, isolating themselves to their tunes and their own problems. • 5. Myself As An Artist I am a artist. A artist is a person who enjoys practicing there creativity though a range of different mediums on different types of canvases, no matter the skill set of that person. When you hear the word artist you think of a person who draws, and paints every chance they get because they love the idea of creating something new. But when I think of myself as an artist I don't see that I see a person who loves to paint and draw, well draw mostly, but only because she is doing it for other reasons like for a grade or something. In my case it is for a grade. Every since I have been taking an art class i have learned to put my creativity into a piece of art that I have to turn in to a teacher. I no longer fine myself drawing or scathing in my free time anymore like when I was a little kid. Now I draw because I have to. Even though I do see myself as an artist, I don't feel like one sometimes. I mean what is the definition of an artist anyway? Is it a person who sits and draws all day because they love it or some one who is supposed to draw or paint for the fun of it, for the enjoyment that you like to create something beautiful. For instance, I had showed my cousin some of my art work and she said that I was really good and that I should go to an art school when I'm older but I caught myself thinking that why did I even create those pieces, would I still have made those pieces if I weren't getting graded for them. When she had said that it brought back memories of me when I was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on The Meaning of Life The Meaning of Life My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so. ...show more content... Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or her role." At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62, 'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be, laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored. Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
