purge syndrome”.
People with bulimia go on
food binges eating large
amounts of high calorie foods
in a short period of time.
Then they feel guilty and
purge themselves into
vomiting or taking laxatives.
19. Compulsive Overeating
• People suffering with Compulsive Overeating have
what is characterized as an "addiction" to food, using
food and eating as a way to hide from their
emotions, to fill a void they feel inside, and to cope
with daily stresses and problems in their lives.
Binge Eating Disorder
• The sufferer periodically goes on large
binges, consuming an unusually large quantity of food
in a short period of time (less than 2 hours)
uncontrollably, eating until they are uncomfortably full.
20. Pica is a medical disorder characterized by an
appetite for substances largely non-nutritive (e.g.
metal [coins, etc.], clay, coal, soil, feces, chalk,
paper, soap, mucus, ash, gum, etc.) or an
abnormal appetite for some things that may be
considered foods, such as food ingredients (e.g.
flour, raw potato, raw rice, starch, ice cubes, salt).
In order for these actions to be considered pica,
they must persist for more than one month at an
age where eating such objects is considered
developmentally inappropriate.
