In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?
1.
2. Due to the fact that a short film is set for under 45 minutes i
feel i have challenged the form of short film as i have created
an even shorter film which lasts only 5 minutes and feel that
the task set was hard to include a storyline with a beginning
middle and end which in 5 minutes is hard to create.
3. The conventions of a short film are non-existent as when we are told we
are about to watch a short film we don’t expect anything in particular and
a short film can include anything at all, they can be formal or informal, live
action or animation, it can be experimental, well the list goes on. Basically
a short film can be on any topic whatsoever and can contain anything
within the film. However short films often explore a theme or belong to a
genre like mine does which is horror.
The short film which I created belongs to a genre, of which my film is included in
the horror category. This means that there should be certain predictable
conventions included within the film to ensure that it does belong to that category
you are aiming for it to be in.
From the research that I have done I decided that I had to include scary noises,
violence and an antagonist in my film to ensure that I did belong in the horror
genre.
4. I have managed to challenge the narrative of horror films by creating a storyline that
leaves the audience to try and imagine things, I was hoping to create a sort of
suspense by dragging the audience in to the film and then making them do the
thinking, making them feel included in the film and hopefully ensuring a scare factor
was included in to the film. I feel that with the audience being dragged in to the film
it helps build tension and is then easier to scare an audience.
I tried to use the structure of Todorov which includes several stages such as:
A state of equilibrium
A disruption of that order by an event
A recognition of the disorder has occurred
An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.
5. I tried to develop the camerawork that I used by changing a few different shots as I
was filming, I stopped looked back and then tried to enhance the shot with different
effects on the camera and also thought about what I could do with the shot editing
wise to make sure that I had a decent enough shot to be able to work with it in the
editing suite after I had finished filming.
The editing stage I tried to challenge the norms of what you see in the theatres, I
tried to include more sounds and I tried editing the level of sounds to which helped
build tension, I also tried different shot speeds for each scene to try and make the
audience look more closely in to what was happening.
