This document provides information and tasks for students taking AS Level Film Studies. It includes two viewing lists containing 8 films each that students must watch at least one from each. Students then must create a case study on one of the films analyzing the director, context, reception, and their reasons for choosing it. Additionally, students must recreate and film a scene from the chosen movie on their phone and upload it to YouTube. The document also outlines equipment and materials needed for Media/Film Studies courses.

The Task
1. You must watch at least one film from each list, then pick one of the films
you have watched and create a case study of it, in any format you wish (blog,
powerpoint, word document, video…) to include the following:
• Background information on the Director
• Contextual information on the film (historical/social/political)
• Critical reception (what the critics said and any awards)
• Your reasons for choosing to study this particular film over the other one
(s) you watched
2. You must also use your mobile phone to re-create a scene from the film and
upload your video to youTube for viewing during your first lesson.

Part 1: 1000 word essay
‘New media technologies have completely
changed the ways in which audiences interact
with media texts.’
Discuss, using examples from at least 2 different media and with
reference to the following audience theories:
• Hypodermic Needle Theory
• Uses and Gratifications Theory

3. Media/Film Studies
Equipment List
2011-12
There is a certain amount of equipment/materials necessary in order to
take these courses. All students must ensure they have the following in
September:
• 2GB (minimum) memory stick*
• Ringbinder with dividers, plastic wallets and document pocket
• Ballpoint pens*
• Paper
• HB pencil*
It would also be useful to have the following:
• Colouring pens and pencils
• Fineliners
• Emergency AA batteries*
*Indicates items which can be purchased in September from Jack (media
technician). You will be asked to show all items to your teacher in your
first lesson.
In addition, if you are able to do so, we strongly advise you to buy a copy
of Media & Film Studies Handbook (Vivienne Clark, Peter Jones,
Bill Malyszko, David Wharton) Published 2007 Hodder Arnold
If you would like to buy your own camera equipment, feel free to
ask our advice.
