HOUNDS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN DENVER
Charlotte loses 15-12 to defending MLL Champions
DENVER, CO (May 3, 2015) — The Charlotte Hounds lost their first road game on Sunday afternoon, falling 15-12 to the defending MLL Champion
Denver Outlaws at Sports Authority Field. The Hounds spent the majority of the game playing from behind, and while they got two late goals, time ran
out before the comeback could be completed. Outlaws midfielder Jeremy Sieverts was named Coca-Cola Player of the Game following a four-point
(3g, 1a) performance. Meanwhile, the Hounds were lead by Jake Tripucka, who finished with two goals and two assists.
Anthony Kelly won the game’s opening faceoff for the Outlaws, but the teams traded possessions without any goals. In the third minute, Mike
Ehrhardt scooped up a loose ball that he dished to Pat Laconi in transition. Laconi then passed off to Brett Schmidt who launched the ball into the
back of the net to give the Hounds an early 1-0 lead. But one minute later the Hounds turned the ball over and the Outlaws equalized. Noah Molnar
had a shot that went off the post but Greg Melaugh was there to bury the rebound. The next four minutes went scoreless before Terry Kimener found
John Haus on the doorstep to put the Hounds back in front 2-1.An unassisted goal from Sieverts would leave the game tied at 2 after one quarter.
Joe Cinosky was hit with a slashing penalty one minute into the second quarter, giving the Outlaws their second man-up opportunity of the game.A
shot from Melaugh took an unlucky bounce off the post, setting up Eric Law for the go-ahead goal. The Hounds got their own power-play opportunity
one minute later, as Patrick Harbeson was called offsides. Haus took advantage and ripped a long shot to tie the game at 3-3. But the Outlaws put
together a four-goal run to make it 7-4. It proved to be a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. The Hounds got back-to-back goals
from Brendan Fowler and Tripucka, but the Outlaws matched with two of their own from Justin Pennington and Law to make it a 9-5 game at the
half.
The third quarter was marred by sloppy passes and turnovers for both teams. But three minutes in, Hounds goalie Pierce Bassett found Laconi on the
clear and Laconi took it all the way to the cage. Josh Dionne added a goal five minutes later to cut the Outlaws lead 9-7, but Drew Snider found the
back of the net before the quarter was over, pushing the home team ahead 10-7.
The Outlaws dominated possession in the fourth quarter, opening with three straight goals, including two from Sieverts. The Hounds got back in the
game with two goals in 13 seconds, the second of the night for each Tripucka and Fowler. Snider then scored his third of the night for the Outlaws, but
Fowler won the ensuing faceoff and Ryan Flanagan scooped up the groundball and took it to the cage to make it a 14-10 game with just over seven
minutes to play. Melaugh scored what would be the Outlaws’ last goal with 6:07 remaining for the Hounds to attempt a comeback. It looked possible
as Schmidt forced a turnover to set up Kevin Drew for a goal and Fowler won the ensuing faceoff to set up Flanagan who made it 15-12 with 1:12 to
play. But Kelly won the next faceoff and the Outlaws were able to hold the ball and run out the clock.
The Hounds (1-2) return home on Sunday, May 10 for a Mother’s Day tilt with the Chesapeake Bayhawks (2-1).The Bayhawks are coming off their first
loss of the season, a 12-9 decision to the Ohio Machine. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00pm ET at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

Bayhawks Previous Game Recap
CHESAPEAKE SUFFERS FIRST LOSS DESPITE HATTRICK BY ATTACKMAN RICE
Fiorito records 13 saves in 12-9 loss to visiting Ohio Machine
ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 3, 2015) — Second-year attackman Jack Rice recorded the first hat trick of his career, but it wasn’t enough as the Chesapeake
Bayhawks suffered their first loss of the season, 12-9 to visiting Ohio in front of 4,739 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Goalkeeper Tyler Fiorito turned in his third straight strong outing with 13 saves for Chesapeake (2-1), which got beaten on ground balls (31-19) and
faceoffs (16-9).Attackman Ben Rubeor along with midfielders Matt Mackrides and Jovan Miller all totaled a goal and assist for the Bayhawks.
Midfielders Peter Baum and Tom Schreiber both notched hat tricks for Ohio (1-2), which led from start to finish.Attackman Jimmy Dailey, a former
Bayhawk, made his first career start and also scored three goals.
“We had trouble defending their midfielders. We couldn’t short them and they ran by some of our poles. Those three guys are a handful and they
dominated the game,” said Chesapeake head coach Dave Cottle, noting that Ohio’s top unit consists of three former first round draft picks in Baum,
Schreiber and Kyle Harrison (one goal). “We also let Jimmy Dailey get a couple in transition. It wasn’t just one or two guys defensively for us.
Everybody had a piece of it.”
The Bayhawks were without faceoff specialist Stephen Robarge, forcing Cottle to use a pair of long poles in that role. He thought the Bayhawks could
have done better on both grounders and draws.
“It looked to me like we were there first on a bunch of ground balls and just missed them,” Cottle said. “We didn’t pick up the ball cleanly and I think
that was the difference in the game.”
Chesapeake fell behind by five goals early in the third quarter, but closed the period with a 4-1 run to get within 11-9 going into the final period.
However, Brian Phipps made six saves in the fourth quarter as the Bayhawks were shut out over the final 15 minutes.
“We hit a bunch of pipes and Brian Phipps played very well,” Cottle said. “Offensively, I don’t think we looked as organized as we have been. I don’t
think we accentuated each other’s strengths. I don’t think we dodged hard, I don’t think we ran hard.”
Rice, in his second season with the Bayhawks, was one bright spot. The second-year professional out of Villanova University now has a team-high seven
goals for the season. “Jack’s an improving player who is doing a nice job. He’s a smart player and has been doing a great job so far,” Cottle said.
Chesapeake got off to a slow start on the defensive end and fell behind 4-1 six minutes into the first quarter. Two of Ohio’s goals came from right on
the doorstep off shots Fiorito had little chance to stop.
Short stick defensive midfielder Jeff Reynolds gave the Bayhawks a lift by scoring a beautiful goal in transition, racing down the right alley and
blasting an overhand jump shot into the top corner of the cage at the 5:36 mark.
Miller delivered a near identical goal two minutes later, dodging down the left alley and firing a left-handed jump shot past Phipps to make it 4-3.
The Bayhawks had difficulty defending the Machine’s midfielders during the first half with Schreiber netting a hat trick to lead the dangerous unit.
Ohio took an 8-5 lead into intermission with offensive middies accounting for six goals.
Ohio opened the third quarter with a pair of quick goals to extend its lead to 10-5. Dailey and fellow attackman Zach Palmer scored on point-blank
shots as the Machine took their largest lead of the game with less than two minutes elapsed.
Rice recorded his third goal of the game to put a stop to a 4-0 run that sandwiched halftime and Rubeor then made the type of determined individual
move that can change momentum. The veteran attackman made a nice move to slip inside defenseman Dana Wilber then absorbed an illegal push
from behind while diving across the crease circle and flipping a shot into the net before landing.
Sure enough, that play sparked a 4-1 run that reduced the Ohio lead to 11-9 with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. Mackrides followed Rubeor’s
lead by also beating Wilber from goal-line extended and finishing. Close defenseman Jesse Bernhardt then authored another highlight reel goal,
scooping a ground ball on the crease and whipping a behind-the-back shot passed a surprised Phipps.
However, Ohio locked down on the defensive end in the fourth frame, holding Chesapeake scoreless for the entire period. Baum beat a long pole for
his third goal of the game to give the visitors a 12-9 lead with five minutes to go and that held up.

News & Notes
BAD HABITS: Since joining the MLL as an expansion team in 2012, the Hounds have opened each season with a loss at American Legion Memorial
Stadium and gone on to start the season 1-3. Will this be the year fortunes change?
PROTECT OUR HOUSE: In the last three years, the Bayhawks have never won a regular-season game in Charlotte. The first game on July 7, 2012 saw
the Hounds win 13-12 as Matt Danowski notched a go-ahead, 2-point goal with 22 seconds left in the game. The 2013 contest on June 22 went to
overtime, where Ryan Young scored 1:24 into the extra period to secure a 16-15 victory for the Hounds. The home team’s 2014 win was slightly more
convincing, as the Hounds used three goals from Mike Sawyer and 10 saves from Pierce Bassett to power them to a 12-7 victory.
ONE-TWO PUNCH: Brendan Fowler last Sunday against Denver recorded his first MLL goals, scoring twice off the faceoff. It marked his first multi-point
game in the MLL. Fowler in limited action in 2014 recorded just one assist.
WINGING IT: Ryan Flanagan last Sunday against Denver scored two goals for the first time in his MLL career. It was the second-straight game in which
the long pole contributed to the scoreboard. Flanagan had one goal total in all of 2014 and two total in 2013.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP: Five of the Hounds’ 12 goals against Denver were scored by players traditionally known for the defense. Ryan
Flanagan, Brett Schmidt, Kevin Drew and Pat Laconi all managed to score on Sunday.
FAMILIAR FACES: The Bayhawks roster features three players who are former Hounds, including Matt Danowski,Jovan Miller and Peet Poillon. Miller
has six points (1g, 5a) on the season, Danowski has three (1g, 2a) and Poillon has one assist.
HELPING HANDS: The Hounds have the lowest percentage of assisted goals in MLL ( 36.4%), while the Bayhawks boast the highest percentage of
helpers (63.9%).
TRANSACTION ALERT: The Hounds this week waived midfielder Greg Edmonds and activated long-stick middie Mason Poli.

  • 9. Hounds Previous Game Recap HOUNDS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN DENVER Charlotte loses 15-12 to defending MLL Champions DENVER, CO (May 3, 2015) — The Charlotte Hounds lost their first road game on Sunday afternoon, falling 15-12 to the defending MLL Champion Denver Outlaws at Sports Authority Field. The Hounds spent the majority of the game playing from behind, and while they got two late goals, time ran out before the comeback could be completed. Outlaws midfielder Jeremy Sieverts was named Coca-Cola Player of the Game following a four-point (3g, 1a) performance. Meanwhile, the Hounds were lead by Jake Tripucka, who finished with two goals and two assists. Anthony Kelly won the game’s opening faceoff for the Outlaws, but the teams traded possessions without any goals. In the third minute, Mike Ehrhardt scooped up a loose ball that he dished to Pat Laconi in transition. Laconi then passed off to Brett Schmidt who launched the ball into the back of the net to give the Hounds an early 1-0 lead. But one minute later the Hounds turned the ball over and the Outlaws equalized. Noah Molnar had a shot that went off the post but Greg Melaugh was there to bury the rebound. The next four minutes went scoreless before Terry Kimener found John Haus on the doorstep to put the Hounds back in front 2-1.An unassisted goal from Sieverts would leave the game tied at 2 after one quarter. Joe Cinosky was hit with a slashing penalty one minute into the second quarter, giving the Outlaws their second man-up opportunity of the game.A shot from Melaugh took an unlucky bounce off the post, setting up Eric Law for the go-ahead goal. The Hounds got their own power-play opportunity one minute later, as Patrick Harbeson was called offsides. Haus took advantage and ripped a long shot to tie the game at 3-3. But the Outlaws put together a four-goal run to make it 7-4. It proved to be a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. The Hounds got back-to-back goals from Brendan Fowler and Tripucka, but the Outlaws matched with two of their own from Justin Pennington and Law to make it a 9-5 game at the half. The third quarter was marred by sloppy passes and turnovers for both teams. But three minutes in, Hounds goalie Pierce Bassett found Laconi on the clear and Laconi took it all the way to the cage. Josh Dionne added a goal five minutes later to cut the Outlaws lead 9-7, but Drew Snider found the back of the net before the quarter was over, pushing the home team ahead 10-7. The Outlaws dominated possession in the fourth quarter, opening with three straight goals, including two from Sieverts. The Hounds got back in the game with two goals in 13 seconds, the second of the night for each Tripucka and Fowler. Snider then scored his third of the night for the Outlaws, but Fowler won the ensuing faceoff and Ryan Flanagan scooped up the groundball and took it to the cage to make it a 14-10 game with just over seven minutes to play. Melaugh scored what would be the Outlaws’ last goal with 6:07 remaining for the Hounds to attempt a comeback. It looked possible as Schmidt forced a turnover to set up Kevin Drew for a goal and Fowler won the ensuing faceoff to set up Flanagan who made it 15-12 with 1:12 to play. But Kelly won the next faceoff and the Outlaws were able to hold the ball and run out the clock. The Hounds (1-2) return home on Sunday, May 10 for a Mother’s Day tilt with the Chesapeake Bayhawks (2-1).The Bayhawks are coming off their first loss of the season, a 12-9 decision to the Ohio Machine. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00pm ET at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

  • 10. Bayhawks Previous Game Recap CHESAPEAKE SUFFERS FIRST LOSS DESPITE HATTRICK BY ATTACKMAN RICE Fiorito records 13 saves in 12-9 loss to visiting Ohio Machine ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 3, 2015) — Second-year attackman Jack Rice recorded the first hat trick of his career, but it wasn’t enough as the Chesapeake Bayhawks suffered their first loss of the season, 12-9 to visiting Ohio in front of 4,739 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Goalkeeper Tyler Fiorito turned in his third straight strong outing with 13 saves for Chesapeake (2-1), which got beaten on ground balls (31-19) and faceoffs (16-9).Attackman Ben Rubeor along with midfielders Matt Mackrides and Jovan Miller all totaled a goal and assist for the Bayhawks. Midfielders Peter Baum and Tom Schreiber both notched hat tricks for Ohio (1-2), which led from start to finish.Attackman Jimmy Dailey, a former Bayhawk, made his first career start and also scored three goals. “We had trouble defending their midfielders. We couldn’t short them and they ran by some of our poles. Those three guys are a handful and they dominated the game,” said Chesapeake head coach Dave Cottle, noting that Ohio’s top unit consists of three former first round draft picks in Baum, Schreiber and Kyle Harrison (one goal). “We also let Jimmy Dailey get a couple in transition. It wasn’t just one or two guys defensively for us. Everybody had a piece of it.” The Bayhawks were without faceoff specialist Stephen Robarge, forcing Cottle to use a pair of long poles in that role. He thought the Bayhawks could have done better on both grounders and draws. “It looked to me like we were there first on a bunch of ground balls and just missed them,” Cottle said. “We didn’t pick up the ball cleanly and I think that was the difference in the game.” Chesapeake fell behind by five goals early in the third quarter, but closed the period with a 4-1 run to get within 11-9 going into the final period. However, Brian Phipps made six saves in the fourth quarter as the Bayhawks were shut out over the final 15 minutes. “We hit a bunch of pipes and Brian Phipps played very well,” Cottle said. “Offensively, I don’t think we looked as organized as we have been. I don’t think we accentuated each other’s strengths. I don’t think we dodged hard, I don’t think we ran hard.” Rice, in his second season with the Bayhawks, was one bright spot. The second-year professional out of Villanova University now has a team-high seven goals for the season. “Jack’s an improving player who is doing a nice job. He’s a smart player and has been doing a great job so far,” Cottle said. Chesapeake got off to a slow start on the defensive end and fell behind 4-1 six minutes into the first quarter. Two of Ohio’s goals came from right on the doorstep off shots Fiorito had little chance to stop.
  • 11. Short stick defensive midfielder Jeff Reynolds gave the Bayhawks a lift by scoring a beautiful goal in transition, racing down the right alley and blasting an overhand jump shot into the top corner of the cage at the 5:36 mark. Dailey and fellow attackman Zach Palmer scored on point-blank shots as the Machine took their largest lead of the game with less than two minutes elapsed. Rice recorded his third goal of the game to put a stop to a 4-0 run that sandwiched halftime and Rubeor then made the type of determined individual move that can change momentum. The veteran attackman made a nice move to slip inside defenseman Dana Wilber then absorbed an illegal push from behind while diving across the crease circle and flipping a shot into the net before landing. Sure enough, that play sparked a 4-1 run that reduced the Ohio lead to 11-9 with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. Mackrides followed Rubeor’s lead by also beating Wilber from goal-line extended and finishing. Close defenseman Jesse Bernhardt then authored another highlight reel goal, scooping a ground ball on the crease and whipping a behind-the-back shot passed a surprised Phipps. However, Ohio locked down on the defensive end in the fourth frame, holding Chesapeake scoreless for the entire period. Baum beat a long pole for his third goal of the game to give the visitors a 12-9 lead with five minutes to go and that held up.

  • 15. News & Notes BAD HABITS: Since joining the MLL as an expansion team in 2012, the Hounds have opened each season with a loss at American Legion Memorial Stadium and gone on to start the season 1-3. Will this be the year fortunes change? PROTECT OUR HOUSE: In the last three years, the Bayhawks have never won a regular-season game in Charlotte. The first game on July 7, 2012 saw the Hounds win 13-12 as Matt Danowski notched a go-ahead, 2-point goal with 22 seconds left in the game. The 2013 contest on June 22 went to overtime, where Ryan Young scored 1:24 into the extra period to secure a 16-15 victory for the Hounds. The home team’s 2014 win was slightly more convincing, as the Hounds used three goals from Mike Sawyer and 10 saves from Pierce Bassett to power them to a 12-7 victory. ONE-TWO PUNCH: Brendan Fowler last Sunday against Denver recorded his first MLL goals, scoring twice off the faceoff. It marked his first multi-point game in the MLL. Fowler in limited action in 2014 recorded just one assist. WINGING IT: Ryan Flanagan last Sunday against Denver scored two goals for the first time in his MLL career. It was the second-straight game in which the long pole contributed to the scoreboard. Flanagan had one goal total in all of 2014 and two total in 2013. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP: Five of the Hounds’ 12 goals against Denver were scored by players traditionally known for the defense. Ryan Flanagan, Brett Schmidt, Kevin Drew and Pat Laconi all managed to score on Sunday. FAMILIAR FACES: The Bayhawks roster features three players who are former Hounds, including Matt Danowski,Jovan Miller and Peet Poillon. Miller has six points (1g, 5a) on the season, Danowski has three (1g, 2a) and Poillon has one assist. HELPING HANDS: The Hounds have the lowest percentage of assisted goals in MLL ( 36.4%), while the Bayhawks boast the highest percentage of helpers (63.9%). TRANSACTION ALERT: The Hounds this week waived midfielder Greg Edmonds and activated long-stick middie Mason Poli.
