This document summarizes the top 10 features for database administrators (DBAs) in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c. It discusses features such as database lifecycle management, real-time database operations monitoring, the EM Command Line Interface (EMCLI), ASH analytics, backup and recovery improvements, pluggable database support, Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM) enhancements, and database-as-a-service capabilities. The presentation was given by Leighton Nelson, an Oracle DBA of over 10 years who works at Mercy, a large Catholic health system.

3. Company Information
• Sixth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S.
• Serves more than 3 million people annually.
• Highly integrated organization that includes 32 hospitals, 300 outpatient locations,
39,000 co-workers and 1,700 integrated physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri
and Oklahoma.
• Among 10 percent of health care organizations nationwide to have a comprehensive,
integrated electric health record that provides real-time, paperless access to patient
information
• MyMercy, a free service, allows patients to connect online with their doctors, plus
see medical information, view test results, renew prescriptions an schedule
appointments using a personal computer or smart phone
• Health Information and Management Systems Society, a global leader in health care
technology, designated Mercy a stage six of a seven-stage process, joining the
ranks of health care leaders such as Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic
• $60 million data center provides fail-safe protection and power. When an EF5
tornado struck Mercy's Joplin facility in 2011, patient records electronically backed
up at offsite data center were immediately available
• Mercy SafeWatch, the largest electronic ICU in the nation, provides 24-hour vigilance
to critically ill patients. Alongside on-site medical teams, high-definition cameras
and sophisticated technology allow specialized ICU physicians and nurses in a
central command center to expand each patient's care team

-DBA Reactions

• Database-as-a-Service
“I promised management that we’d get the project
rolling today. Is the database ready?”
“What database?”
Configuration Management – detect changes across the environment. Enables standardization/change process management by detecting drift. Database systems Enhanced EMCLI verbs – Manage OEM targets from command-line. Blackouts, jobs, deployment procedures etc. Performance Diagnostics Enhancements- ASH Analytics RAC One Node Support – Manage RAC One node databases Group Backup – backup multiple databases in a single run Real-Time Database Operations Monitoring Active Reports
New features in 12.1.0.3. Database Lifecycle Management support for Pluggable databases. Advanced EMCLI script option Enhanced configuration search Change Activity Planner allows you to plan, manage and track long running change activities in the datacenters. Usually done using spreadsheets and -Large scale operations like PSU/patch deployment requiring multiple teams -Consolidation for Exadata -Migration and upgrade projects
Database patching is time consuming – even with opatch auto. Upgrades require lots of testing and manual steps. Also need to minimize downtime to meet SLAs.
Patch Plans can be done online via MOS integration or offline. MOS credentials should be configured to use online patching. Out of place patching copies the existing oracle home, patches it and then switches the Oracle Home for the for the database. Reduces overall downtime.
Provide patch name Select the patches to apply and the targets Set deployment options Patch validates that there are no conflicts for the new patches. Also checks that oracle inventory is OK. In case of Clusterware/RAC it checks clusterware status. Review and Deploy

Database monitoring of application jobs including groups of SQLs and sessions for batch jobs Simple SQL Statements – anything running more than 5 seconds of CPU/IO or running in parallel Identify high resource SQL and PL/SQL Monitor batch jobs such as ETL Monitor and track execution progress More fined grained monitoring of Data Pump Jobs – enabled automatically

Just because we take backups doesn’t mean that it will work.
Automatic Database Diagnostics Monitor Requires Database Diagnostics and Tuning packs. ADDM uses AWR snapshots and automatically runs every hour Real-time ADDM differs from ADDM is that it access data from ASH buffers i.e. direct connection to SGA. No global resources are used i.e. latches and enqueues. Eliminates database restarts Enhanced Real-Time ADDM runs automatically every 3 seconds to proactively detect performance problems.
Diagnostics mode connection requires the SYSDBA role Requires deployment of one-time deployment of packages
Transforms EM12c into a complete 360 view infrastructure management suite – for non-Oracle products.
