Activity Metrics: measuring what learners do, not what teachers say they do. Using xAPI statements, stored in a Learner Record Store, and a combination of data sources, including OpenLabyrinth, WordPress, H5P widgets and IFTTT, we have been able to capture a wide range of activity streams during learning activities.

Workshp presented at the Research Support Community Day 2018 by Ashley Sutherland, Arts Faculty Librarian, Kylie Tran, Senior Client Services Librarian, and Kathryn Lindsay Senior Librarian Bibliographic Software, University of Melbourne. The University of Melbourne Library recently ran a series of workshops to raise awareness of online security, privacy and identity. They developed a suite of resources to help research students check their online privacy settings, identify if their data has been breached, and provide some tips for keeping their online presence “clean”. In a networked world, managing your personal online presence is a vital digital literacy skill. This workshop offered advice on how to run your own ‘Digital Spring Clean’ session and take you through some of the practical ways you can help researchers evaluate their social media settings, secure their online accounts and manage their online identity.

If all information is available online and the best professors are giving their lectures away for free, do we really need so many faculty members? This questioning underlines our need to redefine the faculty role in a way that advances the goals of liberal education. Rather than merely being repositories of content knowledge, faculty must help students progress along the path to mastering life-long learning. Terminal degrees indicate not only content expertise, but also the transferable learning skills of a master-learner, including synthesis, analysis, evaluation, and creativity. The key faculty roles, then, are mentoring and modeling learning, collaborating with students as they build learning networks, and helping students learn to self-evaluate as they develop the agency to become life-long learners. This session will explore alternate models for understanding the faculty role drawn from digital learning models and strategies for promoting that role at the individual, departmental, and institutional level. It will also examine the role of contingent faculty in this ecosystem. Participants will collaboratively create a toolkit for redefining faculty roles on their own campus.

What’s the best way to engage parents and families in flipped learning? Watch a roundtable discussion and get the perspective of parents, teachers and administrators on best practices in school-to-home communications in a flipped learning environment. Our in-depth discussion will include: 1. How strong school-to-home connections can improve the flipped learning experience for parents, teachers and students 2. Why you’ll need to connect with parents and families differently to support a flipped learning environment 3. Tips to connect with students and their families outside the classroom 4. What parents want to improve collaboration and communication between school and home Speakers from St. Louis Schools (MI) and FLN

Auto-multiple-choice (AMC) is an open-source optical mark recognition software package built with Perl, LaTeX, XML, and sqlite. I use it for all my in-class quizzes and exams. Unique papers are created for each student, fixed-response items are scored automatically, and free-response problems, after manual scoring, have marks recorded in the same process. In the first part of the talk I will discuss AMC’s many features and why I feel it’s ideal for a mathematics course. My contributions to the AMC workflow include some scripts designed to automate the process of returning scored papers back to students electronically. AMC provides an email gateway, but I have written programs to return graded papers via the DAV protocol to student’s dropboxes on our (Sakai) learning management systems. I will also show how graded papers can be archived, with appropriate metadata tags, into an Evernote notebook.

The Mean Value Theorem is the most important theorem in calculus. It is the first theorem which allows us to infer information about a function from information about its derivative. From the MVT we can derive tests for the monotonicity (increase or decrease) and concavity of a function.

We cover the inverses to the trigonometric functions sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, cosecant, and their derivatives. The remarkable fact is that although these functions and their inverses are transcendental (complicated) functions, the derivatives are algebraic functions. Also, we meet my all-time favorite function: arctan.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
