- Gerry Hanley, the Assistant Vice Chancellor, CSU Office of the Chancellor and Executive Director, MERLOT, implemented this idea to enable faculty to be able to share or distribute academic technologies in the form of high-quality content in scalable and sustainable ways, so he and a few colleagues began building a resource where the contribution, review and sharing of materials could take place. Thus, the multimedia and educational resource for learning and online teaching aka MERLOT was established.
- Currently, the free and open online library currently has over 77,800 online resources Including 4,900 open etextbooks And 7,700 online courseware And MERLOT links to all of these resources. But, MERLOT is also embodied by these principles listed here in that it works to… Engage its users, recognize their needs, create a gathering place, provide solutions for quality content, offer personal contribution opportunities, and celebrate its users’ accomplishments.

- In order to engage its community of over 142,000 members and many more who are not members, MERLOT recognizes a need to bring new and experienced users together to disrupt their regular day-to-day routines, so they had the opportunity to learn about the many innovations in MERLOT and how faculty were creating and implementing them. As a free and open website, it is available 24/7 It is engaging its users with An annual conference each spring. This year New Orleans, LA Over 50 websites And a myriad of communities and here is an example.
- A few higher education challenges are: Providing quality and affordable multimedia to visually represent complex, interdisciplinary academic studies Lack of faculty time to create and/or locate quality instructional resources Student retention and persistence to graduation Faculty needed to know and find quality online materials so a peer review process was implemented. 23 discipline based editorial boards are reviewing the quality of the submitted materials. Volunteers. Follow a formal review process similar to what we experience in other areas of academia. MERLOT resources provide guidance in developing evaluation criteria for quality content, pedagogical effectiveness, and the ease of use of the online materials. Checking for reliability and validity of the review process through training & mentoring
- We are exciting curiosity by helping faculty to explain their habits of teaching and how they are changing to be more successful in achieving their course and learning outcomes. You can view the many online resources including simulations which do just this. Examples listed here.
- Since one size does not fit all, the many communities in MERLOT are represented in the custom websites. By viewing the Communities are of MERLOT you can view what issues colleagues may be addressing around the world These communities are created through partnerships with MERLOT communities and such as the mobileapps and the Tennessee Board of Regents partnership The OERC and Natl. Federation for the Blind community OER for Cancer in India The Nepal and Africa Networks

- Being free and open MERLOT invites anyone to share and create collectively a useful library and services In addition to adding to the Collection, we encourage information sharing via Social media and the Voices community to openly communicate activities happening for teaching and learning YouTube channel Blog Twitter Facebook The key is to engage the community of users within and among the MERLOT services and resources.
- There are many opportunities to contribute materials, learning exercises, and approximately 5,500 members have done so so far The Journal for Online Learning and Teaching publishes faculty contributions to the online learning and teaching diaspora. The member Profile allows for the sharing of information and resources The Content Builder tool supports the personal creation and sharing of OER We currently have over 300 faculty-created eportfolios sharing their course redesign experiences and resources.
- To publicize the MERLOT resources and its services We provide professional development in order to assist with learning how to discover and create OER The Social Media sites keep its followers apprised of MERLOT and relevant activities The conferences do too.
- The foundation of MERLOT is its community of people and it is a core principle to say thank you. Public recognition with awards and certificates is an important responsibility of every professional organization. The awards celebrate the contributions of individuals and reinforces the values of MERLOT. MERLOT awards recognize and promote online resources Led by the Editorial Boards for the most part It is MERLOT’s way to recognize and thank its contributors in order to keep the foundation strong.
- I asked Gerry Hanley what he sees as the future of MERLOT. Obviously he said it is the continue to increase the collections And its Membership And its Services But MERLOT’s future depends on the community of users who contribute and share within their organizations and within the larger MERLOT community. Connecting so many of us who are interested in quality, innovative, engaging, free and open teaching and learning resources with OER services will keep MERLOT strong and viable in the future.
