Microscopy and Photomicrography
1. Microscopy Workshop
The first laboratory activity for the spring course of the RISE Program was very interesting.
It was about microscopy. We talked about the evolution of the microscope in detail. Since the
first microscope was invented until the last and most expensive microscope in existence, there is a
big difference in quality and in magnification. In order to learn and practice using the different
microscopy types and techniques, we were divided into four groups. Each group was assigned a
different object to collect and observe through the microscope. My group was assigned pound
water. I learned all the techniques necessary to manipulate liquid samples, but especially how to
have a good view of the microorganisms present in that type of water. I used the light microscopy.
We also observed the other groups’ presentations and, by the way, I learned how to use a
dissecting microscope. In addition, I watched fibers of clothing and paper, using stereo
microscopy. In conclusion, this workshop was full of new and interesting things, and I learned a
lot.
