This document discusses the relationship between e-learning standards and pedagogy. While standards can provide benefits like cost control and interoperability, there is a concern they may not support new pedagogies or focus enough on learning outcomes. Standards risk being developed without a strong theoretical or empirical basis and could encourage a focus on compliance over desired learning goals. The conclusion argues standards should enable effective teaching practices based on evidence, support institutional management and development, and evolve to meet new technologies and pedagogies while reflecting student diversity.
