9/11 PP Rotary Club New York 2001-2002
Helen Reisler is often described as “a woman of firsts.” She was the first
woman member of The Rotary Club of New York in 1988, the first woman president of
her club in 92 years, and the first club president to face the challenge of an
unprecedented terror attack on her own city, in 2001.
She raised 1.4 million to aid the needy, while guiding her club members in
“hands on” disaster relief efforts and has traveled by request, to numerous Rotary
districts to speak about this experience. She is highlighted in the book, "Heroes of
9/11," and has been honored in a painting on “The 100 Years of Rotary” wall in
Hartsdale, New York. Rotary International produced a documentary highlighting her
efforts.
As District Governor during 2005-2006, ,” Helen encouraged and taught
clubs how to publicize their community projects, which resulted in an unprecedented
amount of newspaper coverage. She has contributed to, and been interviewed by The
Rotarian Magazine, was RI President Lacy’s media liaison in New York, and is a
consultant to “Radio Rotary.” She is vice president of membership in the Rotary Global
History Fellowship, and a trustee of her club's foundation.
Helen has been appointed by seven successive RI presidents, to represent
Rotary International at the United Nations. She has produced numerous videos to
publicize Rotary projects and many have been selected for cable TV. She recently
produced a video about "Rotary /UN Day."
During the Haiti disaster she coordinated "reports from the field" to the
media department of Rotary International and interviewed on radio where she requested
supplies for the victims and recruited volunteers.
Helen's background includes education, media and business , where she
has held various high profiled positions. She was a Vice President of the "International
Sales and Marketing Club," and one of the founders of "The Sales Hall of Fame." She is
presently a Consultant in Public Relations and Publicity.
She has three children, and six grandchildren. Her husband, Mel, an attorney, and a
Paul Harris fellow, passed away the year of her presidency in 2002.
