This document is a reflective autobiography about the student's thoughts on science teaching. It discusses how the student's views have expanded and how science teachers should be lifelong learners. It describes the importance of student engagement and utilizing the 5-E learning model in the classroom. The student reflects on gaining teaching skills and confidence from the science education course, and plans to apply what they learned about inquiry-based learning and NGSS standards in their future classroom.
3. My thoughts on what makes a good science
teacher haven’t necessarily changed, more so
my thoughts have expanded. I still believe
science teachers should be knowledgeable and
resourceful. However, I now feel that it’s not
just about being knowledgeable but instead
they should always be learning, they should
never stop being students.
A Good Science Teacher
A bad science teacher is a teacher
who is not willing to learn with their
students. Students should feel
excited and intrigued about science,
so a bad science teacher would also
lack student engagement
5. After completing this course, I absolutely plan to utilize the 5-E Model when teaching Science. I
learn best when I am organized and I know that is the same when I am teaching. The 5-E model
helps me ensure my lessons are not only engaging but also effective.
I hope to be as integrative as possible, making connections throughout the students learning is so
important. For example; Social Studies discusses maps which can incorporate science themes like
geology. Math is an important part of sciences like Chemistry and Physics, also when measuring
materials.
I don’t feel 100% ready but I feel like I took a big jump forward this
semester and know that my confidence can only go up from here. I knew a
lot of the material but lacked the skills to actually teach. This class taught
me so much about teaching science and I found it so valuable. The
introduction of the NGSS standards were so helpful.
7. This class has been so eye opening and engaging despite the
pandemic. I am so thankful to have spent this semester with
Dr. Yoon.
The introduction of inquiry-based learning, NGSS, and 5-E
Learning Model have been so helpful and honestly such
invaluable tools for me when I graduate. I plan to utilize all of
these things in my classroom and have really helped me
envision how I plan to approach science teaching.
The group lesson plan was a good intro into lesson planning.
However, I wish there had been more discussion and work on
the individual plan throughout the semester. My other
classes had us work on each section of the lesson and submit
sample so by end of the semester we had been given feedback
on every part of the lesson plan.
