SB6141 Work With
Time Warner Cable
(TWC)

Are you looking to buy your own cable modem to replace the Time Warner
Cable modem you rented from TWC? If you are, then you should look at one of
the newest and the best cable modem from Motorola today – The Motorola
SB6141.
Many TWC who have switched from their rented Time Warner Cable modem to
the Motorola SB6141 have reported achieving download and upload speeds that
they have never experienced before. Not only that, they also expect to see a
savings as they don’t have to rent the cable modem from Time Warner Cable
anymore.
Here we have some users sharing their experience after making the switch from
renting the Time Warner Cable modem to buying their own Motorola SB6141
cable modem:

Surpassed expectations with TWC, July
By Jonah B.
I have Time Warner internet in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC. This is a DOCSIS 3.0 area.
My download speeds have been shockingly unreliable ever since I started my internet
service about 6 months ago. It is supposed to be 20 mbit down. Sometimes, it is actually
better than this (25+ for short times), but more often than not, it is much worse (at times
< 5, usually around 10-12). It also fluctuates wildly on a minute-by-minute basis. One
minute I'll have great speed, the next it craws. Even during a single speed test, it would
fluctuate between about 5-25 mbit.
TWC support was predictably unhelpful. The best I got from them was "that should not be
happening." I pointed out that their own FAQ page says that a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is
required for my service tier (so-called "turbo"). They said no, the old DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola
SB5101 they gave me was fine. I got the same BS from the "normal" reps as well as the socalled "level 3".
I asked if they would give me a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, even though they claim it is not
"required". They said no, I would have to upgrade to "extreme," which would add
$10/month for the service and another $2.50/month for their DOCSIS 3.0 gateway.
So instead of doing that, I bought this modem (which is on the TWC approved device list). I
called them, gave the MAC address, and I was up and running. When the modem
connected, the downstream LED turned blue, which according to the manual, means that
the channel is bonded. This is a very good thing.
With this modem, I get 20 mbit on the dot, 24 hours a day. Every speed test I have run
confirms (including the 200 MB test on testmy.net). Last night, I downloaded about 15 GB
of data with a sustained 20 mbit rate the entire time. It's pretty amazing how effective it is.
My speed is never ABOVE 20 anymore, but it is NOT BELOW either. I believe that the
channel bonding makes it easier for the ISP to enforce bandwidth caps, but it also makes
the connection more reliable. I'll take that deal any day.
I HIGHLY recommend this modem for TWC customers in DOCSIS 3.0 areas. Don't believe
the customer service reps -- it absolutely is required. It sucks that TWC won't provide the
hardware we actually need to fully use their service, but that's just the way it is.

Works with TWC, April 24, 2012
The SB6141 is listed on TWC's list of approved modems. No issues with install. Easy to
access menu to view power levels. Fast and works as advertised. Highly recommend.

I just bought this modem and got rid off the SBG6580 due to it's weak wireless signal, plus i
already own a good dlink wireless router.
Called time warner cable, gave them the mac address and it was up n running in a less than
a minute =] it totally rocks!
TWC was charging me 7 bucks a month for the sb6580 rental fee, i live in los angeles and i
can confirm this new modem works with TWC internet.

This does work with Time Warner cable. I called, gave them the serial number and MAC
address, and I was up and running pretty quickly. Actually, first there were two nice people
who tried to help, and finally I got to talk with real tech support (this guy knew what he was
doing).
He said that someone had ALMOST gotten it right, but left it just sort of finished. In any
case, I was on the phone longer than I expected, but I was pleased that the TWC folks were
polite, professional, and tried hard to get me online. Once I did get online, my speeds
jumped from about 22Mbps downstream and about 2 Mbps upstream to about 30-32 down
and a very steady 5 up (my plan is 30/5).
What's funny is that TWC themselves say that a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is necessary for their
Extreme and Wideband plans, but they don't supply it. The tech guy explained to me that
the boot file in the modem I had recognized that it should be running flat out, based on my
speeds, and that's why I was close, but off what I was paying for.
He was friendly, but my question to TWC is this: If you KNOW that customers can't get the
speed they pay for on the Extreme and Wideband plans without a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, why
not supply it?? TWC's first speed test on my new modem showed me to be at 36
downstream, and my own speed tests later showed me at 30 or a little over (I wonder if
they throttled it back based on that first test?).
In any case, this is a great modem. Even looks nice. Just be prepared with the MAC address
and serial number (the P/N serial number) when you call Time Warner. My downstream
speeds jumped by about 30%, and my upstream more than doubled. A great little modem
that even has lights that turn blue to indicate when your downstream or upstream signals
are "bonded"--the tech guy explained to me that that meant that it was working in sync
with my TWC plan to get the highest speed I could get. Highly recommended.

Ordered Saturday and received Monday! Called TWC gave them the MAC ID. They swapped
out the old MAC for the new and I was up and running in less 10 minutes. DOCSIS 3.0
compliant which is a plus! Measured my speed (via two online speed test sites) after the
upgrading to this new modem and was pleasantly surprised. Used with an exisiting wireless
network. Just plugged it into the router after the modem completed booting and refreshed
and everything was working as it should. Couldn't have been easier and I couldn't be
happier!
If you are looking to switch out your rented Time Warner Cable modem, then I
would highly recommend you to buy the Motorola SB6141 instead of the Motorola
SB6121 or SB6120. The Motorola SB6120 and the SB6121 are basically the same
technologically except for the casing. The Motorola SB6141 however has twice the
download speed of the Motorola SB6121 or SB6120 but cost less than $10 more.
With the Motorola SB6141:
You can enjoy the fastest speed you can get NOW from your provider (get
what you pay for!)
This is a modem with speed faster than any you can get in the market right
now
Will protect your investment. It can handle the speeds that many providers
will be coming up with in the near future
Extremely easy and fast to install
If you are renting your modem, you could recover your investment in about
a year and it is savings for you after that
Given the small difference in price to get twice the speed, I would go for the
Motorola SB6141. At the point of writing, there is a big discount of 20% at
Amazon. However prices are subjected to change, so get it now.
