3. What I Look For in a Web Series Production value Smart writing and directing Interesting performances Well-paced episodes A unique voice Something I haven’t seen before Something that makes it special to the web
4. My Hero Pauline Kael 1919-2001: New Yorker film critic/George Lucas’s nemesis.
5. Why Pauline Kael? Passionate about the medium from its very beginning Championed creators Not afraid to critique moneymakers or make enemies (see previous slide) Discovered and supported lesser-known films Credited with getting Bonnie and Clyde a full theatrical release in 1967.
6. Something Important to Know Kitten Innocent, Defenseless Web Series Creator Not Innocent or Defenseless
7. So let’s talk about Pink http://www.pinktheseries.com Launched in 2007, 3 seasons have screened Won a Streamy for Best Direction in a Drama in 2009
8. Pink: The Bullet Point Review Looks great, sounds great Except for some of the action scenes No subtlety in the writing, too many flashbacks slow down story Natalie Raitano is competent lead, Matthew Tompkins is a bit over-the-top Like that it’s an action series with a strong female protagonist Wish she was less sexualized, though.
9. The Reasons to Be “A Bitch”* Brings fairness into the equation People trust a consistent viewpoint Always making sure that I don’t contradict past reviews – or that if I am, I acknowledge it. Expect more, get more back. Saying “it’s just a web series” is like saying “it’s just a movie.” It’s all storytelling in the end. *For the record, I’ve only been called that once recently. People are usually quite nice.
10. My Goal? Remaining unbiased and open to giving anything a chance Constructive criticism Every review = a case study Every review = an opportunity to learn Allowing for commenting, enabling discussion Pro Tip: Avoid shouting matches between fans and haters. Everyone needs to get involved in the discussion!
