21. Unemployment and youth
VISION:
SOCIAL CHANGE:
“We look to make a real impact on the communities in
which we work and today our structured, focused
programme gives over a thousand children every year
the confidence and skills they need for a brighter
future.”
“Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are four times more
likely than their well-off peers to believe that few or none of their
goals are achievable. (Prince’s Trust 2011)”
- develop character
- improve competence in our mentees to give
them the skills they need for the future
- We have developed four programmes of work
to do this spanning an age range of 10 years,
enabling our mentees to gain support as they
grow.
22. Unemployment and youth
IMPACT on the UK:
- A total of 84% of young people attending 10 or more mentoring
sessions in 2012/13 achieved 5 A*-C GCSEs (including core subjects
English and Maths),
- compared with the average for England of six out of 10 (61%).
By developing their character and improving their competence, we
help mentees see what they’re capable of, letting them raise their
aspirations and their expectations of life. But we also teach them that
it’s not just their future that’s important but that of the whole
community – and, once they’re able, we give them responsibility for
supporting others in need of help.
This ensures the work we do has a knock-on effect, is not just limited to
the children we mentor but reaches far beyond them, changing the
lives of even more young people and transforming the future of entire
communities.
23. What is happening in your area?

in your community?

25. Immigration and Integration
VISION:
SOCIAL CHANGE:
“Integrate Bristol is a charity formed to help with the
integration of young people and children who have
arrived from other countries and cultures.”
“Net migration to the UK in 2013 was 212,000.” (Migration Watch UK)
Integrate Bristol is a charity formed to help with
the integration of young people and children who
have arrived from other countries and cultures.
As well as supporting young people with their learning,
we run projects that help them develop their skills so that
they can participate in society and feel a part of the
community they have joined. These projects are
language based – they may involve film making, drama,
other forms of media or indeed, any creative activities
that encourage the sharing of culture and learning of new
skills. We aim to give young people a voice, a platform for
expressing their views and ideas.
“While politicians are catching up with the public by debating how to
limit immigration, people are increasingly asking questions not just
about who should now be allowed to come here, but how to achieve
integration in a society which has changed dramatically in recent
years.”(BBC Nick Robinson)

Unemployment and youth
Bring up each topic with questions for each -
What is the political makeup of your LC town? How are young people
involved in this? - does your university do anything within the council?
How will this affect the economy of your town and the businesses in it?
Unemployment and employment stats of your town? how are you
affected - how will this affect the town? How does this compare to the
national average rates - does it affect a particular kind of
dempographics of the comunity - what things are happening to bring it
together - does it create divides - is there people, young people aiming to
challenge this -
