So I was asked to address your group a couple months ago, things have sort of changed since then, there is a anxious feeling now. Hi I’m Laura, I review resumes for a living. I’m here to give you the skinny… I come here not as an expert and not as a career counselor, but as a recruiter in the field to pass on to you what I know and what I’ve researched through other large healthcare systems. I spoke to Kaiser, Exempla, HealthOne (HCA) and 3 rd party executive recruiters.
Hopefully some things will be covered today that will be helpful to you, I wish we could just chat.
How many of you have your resumes ready to go at any moment? I like to think of my resume as a work of art that I’m constantly perfecting Connect with your references, old co workers, colleagues and executive recruiters Get in on those conferences, webinars, seminars anything to get you in the know on the market When posting your resume to sites, recruiters/employers understand confidentiality is paramount
Think about what you want ideally, what you’re passionate about, what you know you are best at, focus your resume accordingly If you don’t know what you want to be when you grow up, no worries, but not recommended to communicate this to recruiter/hiring manager
Here are some constants….
For this type, I wouldn’t do the Your position description says this….I have this…as I’ve found in my research that it’s too much. Do want is key words from JD, experience and wins to match up.
in a bulleted, easy to review fashion, summarizes your accomplishments, strengths and offerings
Visit each section explaining components Show 4 th bullet, provides….action statement How you were faced with issues, what you did, how you were successful in changing it
Last bullet…
Some say not to put your community actives on your resume that you’ll look too busy to do a job… Shows active in your field and community – more well rounded
Alright, now that we talked about that, lets talk about what is going to get you in front of that hiring manager and ultimately, in front of their desk…. More info on what I found and what I experience Colorado is a destination state, more sun than CA and FL, one of the highest educated states – allot of competition! I had over 300 applicants for a recent Administrator job posting. All were qualified! Thought I had mistakenly put in wrong category like Administrative Asst, market is very competitive.
Basic things you already know… How many of you never hear back are feel like your submission got lost in the black hole of cyber space? It does not help to drop off a personal hard copy of your resume Don’t add your picture, personal information (TMI), graphics, etc.
45 seconds! Hiring mgrs spend more time reviewing be brief, use action statements, results oriented bullets, buzzwords Formats simple, not allot of tables, pretty fonts, etc. they won’t translate well in ATS, hiring managers are just looking for an excuse no typos Key words would match position description – my last Admin was construction – new build outs, regulatory readiness, physician relations Give example of recent Long Term Care resume
I’m loyal, dependable, people-person Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards so be willing to take a step back in salary and role when changing fields Has anyone encountered the pre-screening questionnaires? Does anyone know how a search agents works?
Be in the know – AONE American Org of Nurse Execs, ACHE, New terminology - some recent ones I found: forecasting models, interest-based problem solving approach, workforce planning, pipeline development Sign up for those webinars, newsletters, email groups or blasts – keep abreast of whets going on
In your pajamas! How many of you are on LinkdIn? Explain it if necessary
Don’t accept invitations from those you don’t know
Set up profile, advised by LinkedIn to only say yes to people you know, its more work, find help Does anyone need to see how it works? Take to site…
Don’t have exec numbers, a place orgs are advertising
There are a ton out there.. It could be full time job! Your kids can help or someone in your office no doubt, loves these things. What questions do you have on these sites?
OMG there are 4 more paragraphs to this I couldn’t fit in the screenshot Some of the recruiters I spoke to said they don’t even read cover letters. Hiring mgrs may… Keep your cover letters short and sweet but as mentioned before, its helpful to mention why you are looking for a change or where you’ve been if you have a gap
Executive, internal, other organizations – when they call and bug you, bend your ear, bend theirs!
