3. Our target audience was 15-20 year olds because they were
the most accessible to us. This is information we gathered
through our research from theorist, Paul Wells.
Our intended sub-genre was a supernatural horror but we
wanted to mix it with the hybrid of a Slasher. This linked to
our narrative, as we included an apparition (ghost) which is
a typical element used in horror films. We used
iconography such as blood, a knife, candles and a
graveyard which is also typical aspects used in horror
films.
Horror films such as The Woman In Black (2012), Carrie
(1976) , Annabelle (2014) and Scream (1996) have all
influenced us when being in the process of creating our
horror trailer. Elements such as chase scenes and mise-en-
scene have been an iconic feature when relating to real
media texts.
4. Effects we were trying to achieve:
• We inserted a green colour matte over a scene which is made to appear as if it's
been shot at night. This gives a perception of a night vision as the green is quite
vivid and creepy. We want to meet the horror genre, as a typical convention from
a horror film would be that the villain comes to haunt the victim when no one is
around because it is dark and night time. This could link to 1996 horror film
Scream, as the villain comes to haunt the victim at night, knowing that no one is
going to be around to save her. In our trailer, the villain comes to haunt the final
girl at night time and attempts to strangle her. Knowing that no one would be
around to save the victim, she has to fend for herself by trying to escape from the
villain and fight back. There is always this typical battle between the victim and
the villain. The victim is always suspected to win in order to achieve her title as
the 'final girl'. This might be the case in our trailer, but we are using Roland
Barthes' enigma code.
5. Problems and overcoming these:
• Sound – to fix the sound we had to raise volume levels and make sure that the sound was
in synch with the clip. We needed to double the audio of the prayer so the audience could
hear it properly.
• Soundtracks – These clashed at one point during our editing process. In order to fix this
problem, we changed the transitioning by making the sound gradual at the beginning and
then fading out towards the end when mixing different soundtracks.
• Lighting - As we wanted our trailer to be as close to the horror genre as possible, we
aimed to film at night time. However, we faced problems with lighting. These issues
involved were, if it got too dark, the picture and movement wasn’t clear. In order to resolve
this, we filmed late afternoon, so that we had a clear vision on the camera. To make the clips
look darker, we used some video effects. For example, grey shadow, brightness and
contrast.
