The peacock population in India is decreasing alarmingly due to poaching and pesticide use. A bird fair in Jaipur was dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of peacocks. Once common across northern, western and central India, peacocks were protected by law as the national bird and associated with several Hindu deities. Peacocks were even exported to other parts of the world by Alexander the Great. Efforts are being made to accurately census the remaining peacock population in India.
