REPUTATION
As a small business person, I have discovered that it takes more than luck to operate a successful business.
While there are many metrics that can be used to measure success, one of the key factors is reputation. Your
reputation is what people say about you. You can’t buy a good reputation, you have to earn it.
The story below features Hattie’s Restaurant which has enjoyed a 75 year history of providing excellent food at
reasonable prices. Their excellent reputation dates back to the 1930s. Through the re-acquaintance of very old
and dear friend, I discovered Hattie’s Restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. At first glance it was not what I
expected after many years of positive comments. It was smaller than I expected, but quaint, even charming. It is
located downtown on a tiny street at 45 Phila.
Hattie’s looks like a place you would find in the French Quarter in New Orleans where Miss Hattie grew her
roots almost a hundred years ago. It even features a backyard heated covered patio with a full bar which is a
watering hole for both locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is cozy and casual and the walls are covered
with pictures of new and old history.
I happened to sit under a picture of Bobby Flay, the famous New York chef, who challenged Jasper Alexander,
2. the 14 year owner of Hattie’s and 5 Star Chef, to a “Throw Down.” Jasper’s famous fried chicken was no match
for Bobby’s “city chicken” and Jasper walked away with top honors.
Below is the review I left after my two visits.
“After many years, in May of 2013 I had the good fortune to sample Hattie’s famous fried chicken which is
acclaimed by just about everyone I run into from the Saratoga Springs greater area. The chicken was moist and
tender, shall I say, juicy, like my mother used to make. The Cole Slaw was laced with cranberries which I have
since added to my own recipe. In my two trips to Hattie’s in the past couple of months parking was a bit hard to
find but well worth the short walk to Hattie’s front door. Phil the Mover”
On my recent visit in October, my host convinced me to try the skirt steak and sample her scallops with Sweet
Potato Hash with onions and peppers. Everything was Excellent and unusual with a hint of Cajun and Soul
Food blended in the mix. I re-experienced the Cole Slaw again, one of my favorites. My mouth is still watering
for Jasper’s fried chicken.
The locals claim, with good reason, “Hattie’s fried chicken is the best fried chicken in the whole wide world.”
If you are in the Albany-Saratoga Springs area – Hattie’s opens at 5 PM and serves a mean brunch on Saturdays
and Sundays.

Historic Saratoga Springs is the home of Skidmore College and the Saratoga Race Track. It is
also the gateway to the Adirondack Mountains, my home away from home. The Saratoga Girls
Rowing Team has trained and competed at our own Benderson Lake in Sarasota.
