1. When you first go onto their website they have a banner with ‘Bastille’ written on it and the background
images are cars in a blurry surrounding, e.g. a desert. If you have watched their music videos previously, this
reminds you of the song ‘Pompeii’ and their album cover for ‘All This “Bad Blood”’ and then the actual
album cover for ‘bad blood’ which is a road where we can see the headlights shining on it. Already we can
see that they are heavily influenced by cars, we see this by their use of cars in nearly every music video of
their newest album. They use the same font throughout their covers and website which presents an idea of
continuity The triangle is used as an ‘A’ and the lead singer of the band, Dan, said that, “People seem to have
their own interpretations of it.” this shows a very laid back attitude promoting a more indie vibe. The more
indie the band is the more it seems to go against the grain of popular culture; starting off from gigs/festivals.
They also have a very distinct way of using EP covers, they manage to incorporate the name of the song into
the bad name, as seen by the examples below. They have a link to all of their social media, this shows that
they are up to date with, focusing on a younger demographic. An emphasis is on tumblr, which is an
alternative blog site, again this helps us to understand their target audience more.

2. Though ‘Bad Blood’, the bands major debut, operates within the standard song guidelines, it
feels way more intense, creating a sense of urgency, what could have been an indie pop album
takes on a whole other meaning because of the so called sense of urgency that it possesses.
Male choirs, string effects, classical music sounds with allusions to Greek methodology and the
bible, really bring an indie vibe to it. Through this we can see that it is heavily metaphorically
based. The feeling of the album that’s always left behind is the overwhelming feeling of
insignificance, showing the world as a much bigger place and the artist can see this. Ultimately
making the songs unselfish in a way.
To mirror this, their music videos focus on an individuals story. There are not many performance
shots in the music videos, mainly narrative. For example Pompeii, there are tops 2-3 different
performance shots throughout the music video, and the rest is focused on Dan, as if he isn’t part
of the band. Some music videos. Like Oblivion, don’t have an obvious performance shot and is
focusing on one girl’s story.
