LSC MEN’S BASKETBALL
Tarleton State leads the Lone Star Conference standings with a 7-2 league record. Four teams - UT Permian
Basin, West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Cameron - are a game back at 6-3.
LSC play continues this week with one league contest Tuesday and four on Thursday and five Saturday.
The LSC men have a 118-64 overall record so far this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s
teams are currently 21-5 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 14-4 against the Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Delvonte Pierre, Cameron University, SR, Guard, Lawton, Okla., Lawton HS
Pierre was on fire against Cameron’s rival Midwestern State, scoring a career high 28 points in the 83-74 win.
He started the game perfect, scoring 19 points on 7-7 shooting from the field including five three pointers in
the first half. Pierre finished the night 10-13 from the field and 6-8 from long range, while also grabbing a team
high 11 rebounds for his second double-double on the season. His performance sparked an overall team effort
and the Aggies set a season high in field goal percentage and assists. The Lawton, Oklahoma native is now
fourth on the team with 10.1 points per game, while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 38.4 percent
from three-point range.
DEFENSIVE
Sammy Allen, UT Permian Basin, JR, Forward, Oakland, Calif., Alameda HS
Allen led the Falcons in rebounding once again this weekend, grabbing 10 rebounds against Texas A&M-
Commerce and ending with 11 boards against Tarleton State in a pair of road victories. UTPB held the teams to a
combined 36 percent shooting from the field and to just 62.5 points per game as both opponents scored season
lows. He added eight points and one steal in each contest. Allen ranks second in the Lone Star Conference with
10.4 rebounds per game.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Quay King, Angelo State University, continues to dominate the offensive production for the Rams as it
downed both of this week’s opponents. The senior guard dropped in an average of 22.0 points per game which
included matching a season high with 28 points scored against Western New Mexico. During this game the
Atlanta native hit seven 3-pointers for the second time this season. This has allowed him to continue to lead
the LSC making 41.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. King aided the defense with eight boards and a
pair of steals.
Malik Albert, Texas A&M University-Commerce, again led the Lions offensively in their three games last
week. He scored 14 points in 15 minutes of game action against Arlington Baptist. He also recorded three
assists. Albert scored 15 points against UTPB, getting to the free throw line 11 times in that game. Albert then
had perhaps his most complete game of the season against WT. He had 23 points, including going 7-of-10 from
the free throw line. He scored eight of the nine Lion points in double overtime to lead the Lions to a win over
WT. He also had four steals, three assists and had a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Chantz Chambers, Tarleton State University, poured in 17 points in No. 11 Tarleton’s 91-73 win over No. 12
West Texas A&M on Thursday. Chambers was 4-7 from the floor and 8-12 from the free-throw line in the win.
Chambers also had a team-high 3 assists for Tarleton. Chambers followed with a team-high 15 points against
UTPB on 6-9 shooting. For the week, Chambers averaged 16 points on 63 percent shooting and 43 percent from
behind the arc.
James McPherson, UT Permian Basin, helped the Falcons to a pair of wins on the road over Texas A&M-
Commerce and Tarleton State. The junior guard hit five 3-pointers in each game this week, scoring 15 points on
5-8 shooting from the arc in the 23-point win over A&M-C. He had five more threes in the 12-point win over
Tarleton State, scoring 17. He ranks third on the team this season with 13.6 ppg and is second in the conference
in both 3-point percentage and 3-pointers per game.
Alex Gonzalez Alvarez, Western New Mexico, was efficient in his 35 minutes on the floor as he went for 17
points during that time. He tallied nine points on three three-pointers against Angelo State, making 50 percent
from three. He then added eight points, with two more triples and four rebounds against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
He also had an assist and steal during the week.
Thomas Tshikaya, Angelo State University, played a big roll on the Rams’ defense during this week’s wins.
He pulled down 17 total boards, which averaged 8.5 per game. This was accompanied by a team leading three
steals and a blocked shot. His pair of steals against Western New Mexico marked a season high for the big man.
Tshikaya also assisted the offense with 21 total points and five assists.
Josh Hawley, Tarleton State University, led Tarleton in rebounding, blocks and steals over the week that
included topping No. 12 West Texas A&M. Against WT, Hawley had 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks
while helping hold WT to a season-low 73 points. Hawley and the Texans also held WT’s David Chavlovich, who
came in averaging an LSC-best 20 ppg, to a career-low three points. The Buffs shot 35 percent from the floor
as Tarleton won the game by 18 points. Against UTPB, Hawley had team highs in points (15), rebounds (7) and
steals (3). Hawley nearly guided the Texans to a 25-point comeback as the game got back to within four in the
final minutes as the freshman forward scored 10 second half points and had all three steals in the final 20
minutes. Hawley and the Texans held opponents to 39 percent shooting on the week.

Jovan Austin, Texas A&M University-Commerce, was a key defensive player in both of A&M-Commerce’s
wins last week. He had four steals against Arlington Baptist. Then against West Texas A&M, Austin was charged
with guarding the reigning LSC Player of the Year. He helped hold him to 36 percent shooting with 18 missed
shots. Austin played 37 minutes in the double overtime game. He also averaged 9.7 points per game, including
18 points against UTPB.
Chris Wyms, Eastern New Mexico University, turned in a standout defensive effort for the Greyhounds on a
road trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State. He paced the team with six steals, which included three in
each game. He also blocked a shot against the Javelinas. With a perfect 13-13 performance at the free-throw
line, he averaged a team-high 12.5 points on the road swing.
Latrell Spivey, Western New Mexico, led the team with 13 rebounds, 10 coming on the defensive end. He
also had three assists, a steal and 16 points. He made 60 percent from the field and added four free throws. He
nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds against Angelo State.
LSC NOTES (Submitted by LSC SID’s)
Angelo State
The Rams bounced back with a pair of wins over both Eastern and Western New Mexico. ASU now sits at 12-4
overall and 4-4 in the Lone Star Conference. The team will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Texas A&M-
Kingsville to face the Javelinas on Tuesday before facing them for a second time at home on Saturday.
Cameron
Cameron defeated its rival from across the Red River Midwestern State last Tuesday in its only game this past
week. CU used a red hot shooting night from Delvonte Pierre to fuel them to an 83-74 win. The Aggies shot
50.9 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from three, and 76 percent from the free throw line, while racking up
a season high 22 assists. Pierre led CU with a career high 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Tyler
Williams added 13 points, JV Long chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and freshmen Jordan
Lewis Elish Benjamin each scored 11. The Aggies will enjoy a nice break before opening the second half of LSC
play with a tough test, hosting Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce in back-to-back games.
Eastern New Mexico
Last week, the Greyhounds completed a two-game road trip against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State.
On Thursday, the Hounds rallied to within two points of the Javelinas and closed to within a single point after
trailing by 13. On Saturday, Eastern dropped an 84-68 decision to Angelo State. For the week, three players
averaged in double figures, paced by Chris Wyms’ 12.5 points per game. This week, the Hounds will host West
Texas A&M and University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Midwestern State
0-1 last week.
Tarleton State
No. 11 Tarleton went 1-1 on the week that was highlighted by a 91-73 win over No. 12 West Texas A&M. The
Texans dropped a home game to UTPB on Saturday to move to 16-3 overall and 7-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Texans will travel to Cameron on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
Texas A&M-Commerce
The Lions won two of their three games last week. They had a 36-point win over Arlington Baptist on Monday.
The Lions then lost to UTPB on Thursday before rallying to defeat West Texas A&M 104-103 in double overtime
on Saturday. The Lions are 6-3 in the conference and are in a four-way tie for second place. The Lions travel to
face Midwestern State on Thursday and Cameron on Saturday.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
2-0 last week.
UT Permian Basin
UT Permian Basin picked up its first road conference wins of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Commerce 84-61
and No. 11 Tarleton State 76-64. Five Falcons scored in double digits in the 23-point win over the Lions as the
Falcons shot 49 percent from the field as a team and 86 percent from the line. UTPB came back two days later
to grab a 12-point win at Tarleton State. Daeshon Francis led the Falcons with 19 points as James McPherson
hit five 3-pointers to add 17. UTPB ends the first half of the LSC schedule with a 6-3 mark.
West Texas A&M
The No. 12 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M dropped back-to-back contests for the first time this season this past
weekend as they started off their five game road trip with losses at No. 11 Tarleton State and Texas A&M-
Commerce. The Buffs continue their five-game road trip on Thursday night as they start off the second half
of Lone Star Conference play in Portales, New Mexico with a matchup against the rival Greyhounds of Eastern
New Mexico with tipoff set for 8:30 p.m. CT.
Western New Mexico
It was a tough road trip for the Mustangs this week against Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Outside of
top performances by Alex Gonzalez and Latrell Spivey, Willie McCray and Jordan Enriquez each paced the team
with 20 points apiece. Alex Gonzalez was efficient in his 35 minutes on the floor as he went for 17 points during
that time. He tallied nine points on three three-pointers against Angelo State, making 50 percent from three.
He then added eight points, with two more triples and four rebounds against Texas A&M-Kingsville. He also had
an assist and steal during the week. Spivey led the team with 13 rebounds, 10 coming on the defensive end.

LSC Men's Basketball Weekly Release (01/23/17)

  • 1. LSC MEN’S BASKETBALL Tarleton State leads the Lone Star Conference standings with a 7-2 league record. Four teams - UT Permian Basin, West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Cameron - are a game back at 6-3. LSC play continues this week with one league contest Tuesday and four on Thursday and five Saturday. The LSC men have a 118-64 overall record so far this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 21-5 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 14-4 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE Delvonte Pierre, Cameron University, SR, Guard, Lawton, Okla., Lawton HS Pierre was on fire against Cameron’s rival Midwestern State, scoring a career high 28 points in the 83-74 win. He started the game perfect, scoring 19 points on 7-7 shooting from the field including five three pointers in the first half. Pierre finished the night 10-13 from the field and 6-8 from long range, while also grabbing a team high 11 rebounds for his second double-double on the season. His performance sparked an overall team effort and the Aggies set a season high in field goal percentage and assists. The Lawton, Oklahoma native is now fourth on the team with 10.1 points per game, while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point range. DEFENSIVE Sammy Allen, UT Permian Basin, JR, Forward, Oakland, Calif., Alameda HS Allen led the Falcons in rebounding once again this weekend, grabbing 10 rebounds against Texas A&M- Commerce and ending with 11 boards against Tarleton State in a pair of road victories. UTPB held the teams to a combined 36 percent shooting from the field and to just 62.5 points per game as both opponents scored season lows. He added eight points and one steal in each contest. Allen ranks second in the Lone Star Conference with 10.4 rebounds per game. OTHER TOP PERFORMERS Quay King, Angelo State University, continues to dominate the offensive production for the Rams as it downed both of this week’s opponents. The senior guard dropped in an average of 22.0 points per game which included matching a season high with 28 points scored against Western New Mexico. During this game the Atlanta native hit seven 3-pointers for the second time this season. This has allowed him to continue to lead the LSC making 41.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. King aided the defense with eight boards and a pair of steals. Malik Albert, Texas A&M University-Commerce, again led the Lions offensively in their three games last week. He scored 14 points in 15 minutes of game action against Arlington Baptist. He also recorded three assists. Albert scored 15 points against UTPB, getting to the free throw line 11 times in that game. Albert then had perhaps his most complete game of the season against WT. He had 23 points, including going 7-of-10 from the free throw line. He scored eight of the nine Lion points in double overtime to lead the Lions to a win over WT. He also had four steals, three assists and had a double-double with 12 rebounds. Chantz Chambers, Tarleton State University, poured in 17 points in No. 11 Tarleton’s 91-73 win over No. 12 West Texas A&M on Thursday. Chambers was 4-7 from the floor and 8-12 from the free-throw line in the win. Chambers also had a team-high 3 assists for Tarleton. Chambers followed with a team-high 15 points against UTPB on 6-9 shooting. For the week, Chambers averaged 16 points on 63 percent shooting and 43 percent from behind the arc. James McPherson, UT Permian Basin, helped the Falcons to a pair of wins on the road over Texas A&M- Commerce and Tarleton State. The junior guard hit five 3-pointers in each game this week, scoring 15 points on 5-8 shooting from the arc in the 23-point win over A&M-C. He had five more threes in the 12-point win over Tarleton State, scoring 17. He ranks third on the team this season with 13.6 ppg and is second in the conference in both 3-point percentage and 3-pointers per game. Alex Gonzalez Alvarez, Western New Mexico, was efficient in his 35 minutes on the floor as he went for 17 points during that time. He tallied nine points on three three-pointers against Angelo State, making 50 percent from three. He then added eight points, with two more triples and four rebounds against Texas A&M-Kingsville. He also had an assist and steal during the week. Thomas Tshikaya, Angelo State University, played a big roll on the Rams’ defense during this week’s wins. He pulled down 17 total boards, which averaged 8.5 per game. This was accompanied by a team leading three steals and a blocked shot. His pair of steals against Western New Mexico marked a season high for the big man. Tshikaya also assisted the offense with 21 total points and five assists. Josh Hawley, Tarleton State University, led Tarleton in rebounding, blocks and steals over the week that included topping No. 12 West Texas A&M. Against WT, Hawley had 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks while helping hold WT to a season-low 73 points. Hawley and the Texans also held WT’s David Chavlovich, who came in averaging an LSC-best 20 ppg, to a career-low three points. The Buffs shot 35 percent from the floor as Tarleton won the game by 18 points. Against UTPB, Hawley had team highs in points (15), rebounds (7) and steals (3). Hawley nearly guided the Texans to a 25-point comeback as the game got back to within four in the final minutes as the freshman forward scored 10 second half points and had all three steals in the final 20 minutes. Hawley and the Texans held opponents to 39 percent shooting on the week. He had four steals against Arlington Baptist. Then against West Texas A&M, Austin was charged with guarding the reigning LSC Player of the Year. He helped hold him to 36 percent shooting with 18 missed shots. Austin played 37 minutes in the double overtime game. He also averaged 9.7 points per game, including 18 points against UTPB. Chris Wyms, Eastern New Mexico University, turned in a standout defensive effort for the Greyhounds on a road trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State. He paced the team with six steals, which included three in each game. He also blocked a shot against the Javelinas. With a perfect 13-13 performance at the free-throw line, he averaged a team-high 12.5 points on the road swing. Latrell Spivey, Western New Mexico, led the team with 13 rebounds, 10 coming on the defensive end. He also had three assists, a steal and 16 points. He made 60 percent from the field and added four free throws. He nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds against Angelo State. LSC NOTES (Submitted by LSC SID’s) Angelo State The Rams bounced back with a pair of wins over both Eastern and Western New Mexico. ASU now sits at 12-4 overall and 4-4 in the Lone Star Conference. The team will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Texas A&M- Kingsville to face the Javelinas on Tuesday before facing them for a second time at home on Saturday. Cameron Cameron defeated its rival from across the Red River Midwestern State last Tuesday in its only game this past week. CU used a red hot shooting night from Delvonte Pierre to fuel them to an 83-74 win. The Aggies shot 50.9 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from three, and 76 percent from the free throw line, while racking up a season high 22 assists. Pierre led CU with a career high 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Tyler Williams added 13 points, JV Long chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and freshmen Jordan Lewis Elish Benjamin each scored 11. The Aggies will enjoy a nice break before opening the second half of LSC play with a tough test, hosting Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce in back-to-back games. Eastern New Mexico Last week, the Greyhounds completed a two-game road trip against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State. On Thursday, the Hounds rallied to within two points of the Javelinas and closed to within a single point after trailing by 13. On Saturday, Eastern dropped an 84-68 decision to Angelo State. For the week, three players averaged in double figures, paced by Chris Wyms’ 12.5 points per game. This week, the Hounds will host West Texas A&M and University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Midwestern State 0-1 last week. Tarleton State No. 11 Tarleton went 1-1 on the week that was highlighted by a 91-73 win over No. 12 West Texas A&M. The Texans dropped a home game to UTPB on Saturday to move to 16-3 overall and 7-2 in the Lone Star Conference. The Texans will travel to Cameron on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. Texas A&M-Commerce The Lions won two of their three games last week. They had a 36-point win over Arlington Baptist on Monday. The Lions then lost to UTPB on Thursday before rallying to defeat West Texas A&M 104-103 in double overtime on Saturday. The Lions are 6-3 in the conference and are in a four-way tie for second place. The Lions travel to face Midwestern State on Thursday and Cameron on Saturday. Texas A&M-Kingsville 2-0 last week. UT Permian Basin UT Permian Basin picked up its first road conference wins of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Commerce 84-61 and No. 11 Tarleton State 76-64. Five Falcons scored in double digits in the 23-point win over the Lions as the Falcons shot 49 percent from the field as a team and 86 percent from the line. UTPB came back two days later to grab a 12-point win at Tarleton State. Daeshon Francis led the Falcons with 19 points as James McPherson hit five 3-pointers to add 17. UTPB ends the first half of the LSC schedule with a 6-3 mark. West Texas A&M The No. 12 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M dropped back-to-back contests for the first time this season this past weekend as they started off their five game road trip with losses at No. 11 Tarleton State and Texas A&M- Commerce. The Buffs continue their five-game road trip on Thursday night as they start off the second half of Lone Star Conference play in Portales, New Mexico with a matchup against the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico with tipoff set for 8:30 p.m. CT. Western New Mexico It was a tough road trip for the Mustangs this week against Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Outside of top performances by Alex Gonzalez and Latrell Spivey, Willie McCray and Jordan Enriquez each paced the team with 20 points apiece.
