The document introduces a search maturity model to help assess the effectiveness of search capabilities and determine the next steps needed to improve performance. It discusses applying Maslow's hierarchy of needs to search and outlines initial categories and levels for the model, including base, beginner, intermediate, advanced, and extreme. The draft model measures maturity across infrastructure, data, understanding users, search experience, and culture. It encourages providing feedback on the draft model.
29. Maslow actually does have a real connection to the
world of software...
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a
nail
— Alexander Maslow - 1966
30. so how do I figure out
where I am?
How do I measure moving
up the hierarchy?
31. A maturity model is a tool that
helps people assess the current
effectiveness ... what
capabilities they need to acquire
next in order to improve their
performance.
-- Martin Fowler
35. Beginner: The team is cares enough about search
to to adopt some basic practices in earnest but is
still performing them at a rudimentary level.
36. Intermediate: Practices are somewhat mature and
are delivering fewer errors and more efficiency.
Search effort is primarily viewed as a "cost center".
For many teams, Intermediate practices may be
sufficient.
37. Advanced: The team is doing something well
beyond what most of the rest of the industry and is
seeing a great deal of efficiency and business value
as a result.
Search effort is viewed as a strategic asset that
drives business value! Generates "profit".
38. Extreme: Elements within the Extreme category are
ones that are expensive to achieve but for some
teams should be their target.
Put another way, most organizations would be crazy
to implement them, while this minority would be
crazy to not implement them.
