This is a presentation describing the duties of the undergraduate assistants to Eric Bauman in the Simulation Lab of the Anesthesiology Department at the University Of Wisconsin - Madison.
2. Training/Education
RN, PhD, EMT
Affiliations/Employment
◦ University of Wisconsin - Departments of
Anesthesiology, Athletics
◦ Middleton EMS
◦ Town of Madison Fire Department
3. Participate in weekly team meetings
Completion of HIPPA training and IRB Human
Subjects Training to learn about patient safety and
privacy in order to work with research dealing with
human subjects.
Continuous work on the simulation-based website
which includes editing/reviewing existing
simulation technology, adding new simulation
games and technology, and completing research of
these items.
Helping contribute to a literature review comparing
the ErgoMask to the standard Bag Valve Mask
4. Dr. Bauman, Allan Barclay, and the three undergraduates help
edit the search engine of simulation games and therapy in
order to better organize information for this material.
5. For each item in the data base of the website we look to include key
information such as
◦ The name of the product
◦ A description
◦ A URL where the product may be found
◦ A Vendor
◦ An Audience
◦ The health care Topics that the product covers
◦ And a Platform
6. Sickle Cell Slime-o-Rama Game
Online game show featuring questions about life with sickle cell disease. The
questions describe the disease itself, effects on the body, and proper lifestyle
decisions based toward younger children.
iStan
◦ Developed by the military, iStan in a mannequin realistically moves, breaths,
lives, and dies. iStan is wirelessly controlled, and is so realistic, his skin even
has pores and hair follicles.
The variety of different types of simulation have opened our eyes to many
different types of learning in the areas of medicine and health, and how this
learning may be applied.
7. We are also researching a new breathing and ventilation facemask
called the ErgoMask that is designed to out perform the standard
mask model while being used in conjunction with bag valve
resuscitation.
◦ Unfortunately not much information on the ErgoMask is available
◦ Find literature reviews comparing the effectiveness and
performance of the Standard Bag Valve Mask to the ErgoMask
10. We hypothesize that the ErgoMask will create a more positive outcome than
the standard bag valve mask when used by novice clinicians.
As seen here
both men, in red,
and women, in
black, performed
better when
using the
ErgoMask. The
gender
difference in
performance may
be due to hand
size and
flexibility
11. The ErgoMask project is relatively new to
those of us that have just come into this
research due to mostly working on the
website.
Having a glimpse at the ErgoMask has
shown us the importance of comparing
products in the health field to insure that
the best product is being used.
12. Both learning about simulation therapy and new air
pathways are beneficial in our research.
Simulation therapy can change how health care is
taught and may decrease error in real life crisis
management situations.
Learning about new air pathway devises can help us
learn about comparative research by going through
steps in order to prove which pathway works more
efficiently.
What we have learned about is intriguing and is
something we would have not had the chance to
understand without this research. This information
may shape new ideas and devises in healthcare,
which makes it exciting to be able to work and learn
about.
