What are the outcomes associated with the use of social media applications in healthcare professional education today? The tools are available and during the past 6 months there has been an explosion in the number of professional articles about the use of somcial media in helathcare. I am passionate about the use of social media tools in nursing education and how these tools may breakdown barriers that exist between healthcare professional disciplines.
And so we can see as of June 2011 Social Networks were reported to be the most heavily used by the US Internet sector.
Know thyself and figure out the digital divide that lies between you and the learners. You can suggest social media and use it yourself for learning to get an understanding for what your current learners are digesting on their own time. Be creative and passionate about what you teach and how you teach it!
Students at the University today expect to be entertained. They want to be attracted to the material being taught. How might we as educators use social media to meet their expectations and learning goals? I suggest first and foremost surveying your students at the onset and deliver education in an entertaining and fun way. Studies have shown the long-term retention of the material is improved with students are engaged and enjoying what they are learning. This takes extra effort as an educator, however we have socail media to assist us in this endeavor. What were some of your fondest memories with learning…was your teach entertaining?
Our learners possess the 8.5 multiple intelligences to varying degrees. And they manifest themselves as strong or weakEducators are wise to consider methods to engage multiple intelligences so at the individual learner’s level the weaker intelligences may be offset by the stronger one. Videos tap into all of the intelligences and deepen learning through emotional responses.

Learning is a social affair and therefore lends to the use of social media technology. During the past year the use of social media tools in healthcare professional education has reached an exponential level.
In 2005 I used blogs for clinical education purposes by having nursing students blog about their clinical experiences in a password protected blogspot. This led to the publication of the potential use of blogs in nursing education. Blogs enhance students creativity by providing real time publication and therefore encourages students to write and improve their writing. I went on to interview my colleagues at work in 2006 in order to show interest in them and to learn more about them as people.
Here are some examples of the use of blogs today. This is a blog that explains to others what it is like to be a nurse.
Here is a blog that is written by medical residents which may be shared with other potential residents.
Hash tags are a way to code tweets so other twitters may find the area in an easy manner
I have used wikieducator as a SM tool for grad students to create lessons for their patients or clients.
This is an example of a graduate nursing student’s work in Wikieducator. Wikieducator is intuitive and easy for students to learn and use in the future. It can be added to and commented on by the users.
I developed various online games and researched the use of Virtual Worlds in healthcare professional education. See article in JMIR. Here is an example of a ECG game I designed for my students to use in order to learn ECG interpretations. An example of active, hands on learning via the Internet and mobile devices
YouTube is the largest user-driven video content provider in the world; it has become a major platform for disseminating multimedia information. A major contribution to its success comes from the user-to-user social experience that differentiates it from traditional content broadcasters. more than48 hours of video content is uploaded every minute and 3billion views are generated every day.YouTube connectsseamlessly with major online social networks (OSNs) suchas Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ to facilitate off-site diffusion. In fact, 12 million users have linked their YouTube account with at least one such OSN for auto-sharing, and morethan 150 years of YouTube content is watched on Facebookevery day.More importantly, YouTube serves as a popular social network on its own, connecting registered users through subscriptions that notify subscribers of social and content updates of the subscribed-to users.
Currently, I am investigating the use of YouTube and Vimeo in healthcare professional education by conducting a scoping review with a colleague in Tromso, Norway.
Storing and archiving documents. It is great to store your academic documents or class notes for your colleagues and students to read and notice your work.
Google play was just released earlier this year and holds great potential for disseminating healthcare related games virtually. Music books movies game apps are all in one place that is accessible via the web or an android device
My intention is to create a course within Facebook in 2013 and conduct further research surrounding the use of SM in healthcare professional education
