What is Haptics?
• Haptic technology is something that help us to touch virtual objects and find out the
concept it on real world.
• Also Haptic, is the technology of adding the sensation of touch an feeling
to computers.
• Haptic = Interaction between humans and computers or virtual world.
• Haptic technology is a tactile feedback technology which takes advantage of the
sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user.
• A haptic device gives people a sense of touch with computer-generated
environments, so that when virtual objects are touched, they seem real and
tangible.
Some Samples
Word Root
• The word haptic, derived from the Greek root haptikos, meaning “able to grasp or
perceive.” and arises from the Greek verb haptesthai, meaning to contact or to
touch.
• Haptics =Touch = Connection
History
• One of the earliest applications of haptic technology was in large aircraft that use
servomechanism systems to operate control surfaces. Such systems tend to be
"one-way", meaning external forces applied aerodynamically to the control
surfaces are not perceived at the controls. Here, the missing normal forces are
simulated with springs and weights.
• The first US patent for a tactile telephone was granted to Thomas D. Shannon in
1973.An early tactile man-machine communication system was constructed by A.
Michael Noll at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. in the early 1970s and a patent
issued for his invention in 1975.
• In 1994, Aura Systems launched the Interactor Vest, a wearable force-feedback
device that monitors an audio signal and uses Aura's patented electromagnetic
actuator technology to convert bass sound waves into vibrations that can represent
such actions as a punch or kick.
• In 1995 Norwegian Geir Jensen described a wrist watch haptic device with a skin
tap mechanism, termedTap-in. It would connect to a mobile phone via Bluetooth.
Haptics Feedback
Haptics is implemented through different type of interactions with a haptic device
communicating with the computer. These interactions can be categorized into the
different types of touch sensations a user can receive:
• Tactile Feedback
Refers to the sensations felt by the skin. It allows the user to feel things such as
the texture of surfaces, temperature and vibration.
• Force Feedback
It reproduces the directional forces that can result from solid boundaries. E.g. the
weight of virtual objects, inertia, etc.
Haptics Feedback
• Tactile Feedback
• Force Feedback
Haptic Areas
• Human Haptics:The study of human sensing and manipulation through touch.
• Machine Haptics: the design, construction, and use of machines to replace or
augment human touch.
• Computer Haptics: algorithms and software associated with generating and
rendering the touch and feel of virtual objects.

Haptic Devices
It allows users to touch, feel and manipulate 3-D objects in virtual environments.
Some important Haptic devices:
1. Phantom
Provides a 3D touch to the virtual objects.
2. Cyber Grasp
The Cyber Grasp system is an innovative force feedback system for your fingers and
hand. It lets you "reach into your computer" and grasp computer-generated or tele-
manipulated objects.
3. Magnetic Levitation Haptic Interfaces
A technology for feeling sensation over total body.
Advantages of HapticsTechnology
• Working time is reduced.
• Communication is centered through touch and the digital world can behave like
the real world.
• Increase confidence in medical field.
• With haptic hardware and software designer can feel the result as if he were
handling physical objects.
Disadvantages of HapticsTechnology
• Higher cost.
• Large weight & size(especially wearable ones).
• From point of algorithm, output is not saturate.
• The precision of touch require a lots of advance design.
• Haptic interfaces can only exert forces with limited magnitude and not equally well
in all directions.
Conclusion
• Continued implementation of tactile devices to aid people with disabilities will
advance further
• Future generations of mobile devices and game console accessories will implement
more haptic feedback
• Advances in hardware will provide opportunities to produce haptic devices in
smaller packages, and haptic technology will find its way into increasingly common
place tools.
