2. (Varenagh Aznavurian's stage name, Paris, 1924 - Mouriès, 2018) This Armenian-born
French film star, composer and actor said of himself, in his autobiography Aznavour by
Aznavour, that the beauty of his music was not so much in the voice as in the song
itself. The first of his many facets in which he found recognition was that of
composition, when Edith Piaf requested his services: topics such as C'est si triste
Vénice or She launched him to fame. Later he managed to work in the musical theaters
of Paris, and his fame was growing until he reached the cinema, where he acted under
the orders of directors of the likes of François Truffaut, and participated in
memorable films such as The Head Against the Wall (1959), Tirad on the pianist (1960),
The Tin Drum (V. Schlöndorff, 1979) and Edith and Marcel (C. Lelouch, 1983). In 1992
he starred in the television series El Chino; five years later he was awarded a César of
honor for the whole of his career.
3. Today, 1 October 2018, Armenian-French singer, songwriter, actor, public
activist and diplomat Charles Aznavour has passed away. Besides being one of
France's most popular and enduring singers, he was also one of the most well-
known singers in the world. The ‘Frank Sinatra of France’ was known for his
characteristic short figure and unique tenor voice. He has appeared in more
than 60 films, composed about 1,000 songs, and sold well over 100 million
records. Aznavour was 94.
