Learning task: where the animals live?

animals live in desert, sea, forest.

Description:

Students work independently to put the animals(which
live in desert, sea, forest) in their right places on a felt
in cartoon. Cutouts from “felt’’ materials are used to
stick in the cartoon with glue. The student classifies the
animals until he can put each animal in the correct place .

Learning task adapted from:

http://forums.hawaaworld.com/showthread.php?t=1036558&page=5

Age Group:

4.5 to 6.5 years.

Subject Area:

Science.

Subject Strand:

Classifying.
Subject Topic:

Where the animals live?

Background information:

Learning about animals for children is not just about animals, but it's about
learning itself. Children like to learn. Their brains were designed to absorb
knowledge. Anything that stimulates that instinct is going to be an
immediate attraction for the child.

Unlike rocks or trees, animals have much more information to observe and
learn without doing too much work. Watching an animal, the child can learn
how and what it eats and where they live.

Watching animals move from place to place can bring a strange fascination.
Seeing a snake slither along or a worm wiggle its way over the ground shows
the child how that physical movement is not dependent on legs and feet.
Some animals leap and run while others seem to just lumber along plodding
their way through life.

Some animals seem small and weak like insects and mice. Others like lions
and hippos seem large and mighty. Many animals are readily available for
human touch. In society, goats, cats, can play this role. In rural settings, it
might be sheep, cows, and horses.

Children seem to realize that like the animals they are a part of life on this
planet. In learning about animals, most children are also learning something
about themselves.

This learning task takes advantages of this information, as it requires that
children classify animals which are live in desert, sea, forest as they work
with images of animals.
Student learning outcomes:

Classifying:

Identify & Classify animals according to its environment (desert, sea,
forest).

Prerequisite Concepts, Skills, &Values:

   • Follows class routines for selecting ,using and returning individual
       learning tasks.

   • Adopts class routines for obtaining teacher support to demonstrate
learning tasks and to obtain assistance.

   • Has experienced stories, television, or cinema where real and
       imaginary characters are depicted.

   • Has experience finding differences in environments of animals.

   • Recognizes classifying and can put the animals in its environments.

Learning Theory & Instructional Strategies:

   • The activity is based upon a cognitive approach where students make
       links with previous experience.

   • The teacher demonstrates the learning task for the child initially,
and then the child works on his own .

   • Children will work with materials that appeal to the sense and that can
       be touched.
• Children will work with materials that appeal to the sense and that can
be touched, classify the animals(working with manipulative).

Student Characteristics Accommodated:

   • Accommodating linguistic and spatial intelligences was considered in
the design of this activity as student enjoy classify the animals and
       putting them in their environment.

   • The activity provides concrete experience leading to the more
abstract recognition and formation of printed animals.

Introduction of the learning Task:

  • Show the child how to remove the activity tray from the shelf noting
       the placement of each item.

  • Take the learning task to an open space on the carpet.

  • Demonstrate how take the cards out of the plastic bag and
place(classify) the animals in its environment.

  • Have the child practice saying animals names and its environment.

Preparation:

  • Cut out the animals (which live in desert, sea, forest) using the
       outlined parts on A4.

  • Label the desert, sea, forest.
• Cover the cartoon with a brown felt for desert, a blue felt for sea,
       and green felt for forest.

  • Put the animals in its environment. .

Tools and Equipment Needed:

          • 3Cartons

          • three colors felt(green, brown ,blue),

          • superglue ’ohoho’,

  3. Read story, song of animals.

Enrichment Activities:

  1. Student could use play dough to form animals.
2. Asked the child to describe the difference appearance of animals
      that characters of each environment.

  3. Student could be introduced to the wild and farm animals.

Assessment Techniques:

  • Student classify the animals to ensure that they have correct
      environments.

  • Instructor observes the student while working and provides feedback.

  • Instructor examines the finished product.

Feedback Suggestions:

  • How can you decided where should put each animals?

  • What is different about animals environment?

  • Please tell me the names of animals.

  • Now try to give me the names of other animals?

Evaluation Rubric:

  1. Does not distinguish between animals which live in different
      environments?

  2. Begins to distinguish some of the animals.

  3. Classify most animals and match it in their environments. ,

  4. Classify all animals correctly.

Vocabulary:
Classify, animals, desert, sea, forest.
