Strategies for Smart Cities Success
 Smart City Projects Should Be “People-Centered, Problem-Driven and Responsible
 Thinking Globally and Acting Locally
 The Importance of Having a Comprehensive, Realistic Smart City Vision
 Slow and Steady Sometimes Wins the (Smart City) Race
 Experimental Smart City Projects Before you do a multi-million-dollar rollout, try it out in one small area. You can
use more of an iterative, agile approach and deliver incremental improvements on a monthly basis
 Learn from Startups without Trying to Replicate Them
 The Importance of Public-Private Partnerships Building Smart Cities Starts with Grassroots Support
 Data Governance, Privacy and Data Analytics Are Vital Considerations
 Explore Other Types of Alliances -partnering with local universities on data analysis, support across city officials
whether it is the police, fire, public works or any other department.
 Procurement Should Be Strategic

Solution in Smart city segment
The smart cities segment as those that are helping to connect services, utilities, and roads to the internet. These are
providing data-driven services that help cities increase their efficiency in using resources and/or help increase public transit-
related mobility for city consumers.
Parking – are improving the efficiency with which we park our cars, doing everything from booking (ParkWhiz), parking
analytics (Parkifi), and smart metering (MeterFeeder).
Grid/Energy – These companies are using analytics, algorithms, and connectivity to keep supply and demand for electricity
in balance.
Data-Driven Urban Planning – These companies are providing access to new, hyperlocal data about our cities and helping
planners understand neighborhood needs better.
Smarter Transport – That are working on new commuter shuttle transit options powered by data (Bridj, Shuttl), or smart
bike-sharing programs (Zagster, Mobike, Ofo).
Environmental Sensors – Companies that are developing hardware to better understand our urban environment, from
weather data, to pollution, to ambient sound.
Connectivity – That are using different means to provide internet, connections, and infrastructure for new networks.
Waste Management – Using data and connected devices to optimize waste collection.
Traffic/Transit Data – Private companies that are using mobile and sensors to provide analytics around commutes and
congestion.
Water Software & Analytics – Tools that help analyze and test water in our cities.
Disaster Management – Helping local governments make quicker and more informed, data-driven decisions prior to and
during natural disasters.

The Smart City Services Platform (SCSP) is one of three Future Internet (FI)
Platforms that are part of the FI-PPP program.
The platform aims to foster the development and uptake of smart city
applications using technical components, so called enablers, provided by FI-
CONTENT.
This platform offers various specific and generic enablers focusing on
innovative and open smart city functions as open data databases, Point-Of-
Interest (POI) handlers, social network and community sharing as well as
recommendation services and interactive user-generated content.
The Smart City Services Platform high level architecture includes the main
scenarios and their necessary enablers (generic and specific ones).
Generic enablers (in blue) are provided by FI-Ware [4] and Specific Enablers
(in green) are provided by the different FI-CONTENT 2 partners.
The identified scenarios are the basis for the large-scale user
experimentations conducted within FI-CONTENT 2, each uses a subset of the
functionalities developed and provided by the Smart City Service Platform.
The scenarios represent main functionalities identified for the first release of
the Smart City Guide (SCG) application and builds the basis for development
of reference applications that will be used for testing at the experimentation
sites.
