HENDERSON THEORY IN NURSING

2. o Virginia Henderson graduated from the Army
School of Nursing in 1921.
o In 1926 she was awarded BS & MA degrees in
nursing education from teachers college Columbia.
o Her interest in nursing evolved from helping sick &
wounded military personnel during world war I
o She was influenced by her nursing education &
practice.
o In 1955 Henderson first published her definition of
nursing.
o In 1966 Henderson clarified her definition based on
the sciences of physiology medicine, psychology &
physics,

3. DEFINITION OF NURSING
•The nurse assist the patient
with essential activities to
maintain health, recover from
illness or achieve a peaceful
death.

6. HENDERSON & FOUR CONCEPTS OF
NURSING METAPARADIGM.
PERSON
•Is viewed as an individual requiring
assistance to achieve health &
independence or a peaceful death.
•The person & the family are viewed as one
unit.
•Is affected by both body & mind
•Has certain basic needs for survival

psychological. sociological & spiritual
components
•Is either sick or well & strives toward a
state of independence.
•Needs strength or will or knowledge to
perform activities necessary for healthy
living.

8. ENVIRONMENT
•Is not specifically defined
•Involves ones relationship one shares with
his family.
•Also involves one’s community for providing
health care.
•Can be controlled by healthy individuals.
•Can affect health & personal factors &
physical factors play a role in a person’s well
being.

9. HEALTH
•Refers’ to an individuals ability to
function independently in relationship
to the 14 basic needs.
•Is a quality of life that is basic to
human functioning
•Requires strength or will or knowledge

10. NURSING
•Helps a person to be independent of assistance as
soon as possible or achieve a peaceful death
•Requires working interdependently with other
members of the health care team
•Requires basic knowledge of social sciences &
humanities
•Requires knowledge of social customs & religious
practices to assess the areas of possible conflicts
unmet human needs.
•Help patients to meet 14 basic needs.
•Is a logical scientific approach to problem solving
that assist ion individualized care
