Definition of Credentialing
• Credentials are written documents that communicate to others
the nature of one`s competence and provide evidence of one`s
preparation to perform in a specific occupation.
• Is a term applied to processes used to designate that an
individual , program , institution or product have met
established standards set by an agent (governmental ,non
governmental) recognized as qualified to carry out this task.
Health Care Accreditation
• Is a practice that's implemented to ensure all necessary
practitioners and places are up to par in terms of standards,
competency, ethics and standing.
Credentials Include
• Certificates ,degrees ,and diploma awarded by educational institutions.
• Legal licenses awarded by a government.
• Recognition by a professional organization (certification) that focuses
on specialty area.
Certification
• Is a credential provided by an organization rather than the state.
• Usually granted after an applicant has completed an approved
course of study and passed an examination .
• Doesn’t confer the same legal right to the holder as does a license.
Definition of Licensure
• Means a restricted practice requiring a license , which gives ”a
permission to practice “such licenses are usually issued to regulate
some activity . That is deemed to be dangerous or threat to the person
or the public.
Definition of syndicate
A temporary association of people or firms authorized to under take a
duty or transact specific business.
Purpose of credentialing
1) To advancing the safety of health care.
2) Improving the quality of health care.
3) Improving the process of health care.
4) Clarifying and defining the roles of the nurse and other member of
the team.
5) Improving the delivery system organizational culture.
6) Providing professional support.
7) Shaping future healthcare delivery practice.
8) Improving job satisfaction.
Accreditation process
1) Call for an application.
2) Complete and Submit application.
3) Upon receipt a packet will be mailed to you Containing:
• Accreditation Manual.
• Welcome letter.
4) An Accreditation team member is assigned to aid you through the
process.

5) Conduct the Self Study:
• Mission of Program.
• Administrational Responsibilities.
• Finances and Funds.
• Student Services.
• Instructional Design & Program Elements.
• Physical Facilities.
• Equipment and Tools.
• Cooperative Training.
• Instructor Qualifications.
Accreditation process(cont.)
6) Submit the Self Study to the review committee
7) Self Study is reviewed by the committee
8) Upon approval of the self study a Visiting Team is assigned
9) An on-site visit is scheduled
10) The one day on-site validation is executed and completed
11) Final Determination is made to grant accreditation & list the program in
official directory
The future of credentialing in health care
• Because credentialing in nursing involves so many aspects of
education , licensure ,and certification ,it has confused the public ,
nurses , and other health care professionals .
• The ideal credential clearing communicates qualifications and
competence ; there for , it is important for nursing to have a
credentialing system that can be understood by others .
• Current changes are moving nursing closer to an effective credetianal
system .
History of Nursing Licensure
• Prior to the Nightingale era, no credentials were available to nurses.
• The first true nursing credential was a certificate of completion issued to
nursing graduates. In the late 19th century, nursing education varied widely
in quality and length.
• Programs varied from 6 weeks to 3 years and included as little education as
on the job training to extensive apprenticeships.
• Nursing leaders became united in the belief that a more uniform education
and credentialing system was necessary so that nursing was seen as
accountable to the general public.
History of Nursing Licensure(cont.)
• In the late 19th century the first president of American Nurses
Association , Isabel Hampton Robb , said that : “ In the absence of
educational and professional standards , I am sadly forced to admit
that the term ‘ trained nurse ‘ means any thing ,every thing and next to
nothing “
Types of licensure
1-Permissive licensure.
2-Mandatory Licensure.
3-Institutional Licensure.
1-Permissive licensure
• Is a system where by an individual allows to practice nursing as long
as they don’t the letters RN after their names.
• It only protects “the registered nurse” title but not the practice of
nursing it self.
2-Mandatory Licensure
• Requires practitioners to have a license for providing a service.
• There is mandatory licensure for physician , dentists , and nurses in all
states.
3- Institutional Licensure
• Although universally rejected by every nursing organization ,it has
become a reality for many other types of health care workers.
• Such as respiratory therapists and physical therapists .
Importance of licensure
1) Provide greater protection to the public.
2) Provide safe and effective nursing care.
3) Distinguished between trained to provide nursing care from
untrained .
4) A wariness of society needs and nurses meet this needs.
Qualification for licensure applicants
1) Graduation from nursing school, pass standardized examination .
2) Graduation from high instituted of nursing or baccalaureate degree
or diploma.
3) Mental and physical health status .
4) Clean C.V.
Obtaining a nursing licensure
There are two different procedures for obtaining an initial licensure:
1-One is used for obtaining an initial licensure is called “ Licensure By
Examination ‘’
• The applicant must be meet all provisions of the law (educational
program, language proficiency ,and legal residency status ) and must
pass standard examination.
2- Licensure by Endorsement
• Nurses who move from one state to another can obtain recognize their
nursing license from the original state of licensure.
• It requires meet all previous of law and must apply for Licensure by
examination.
Establishment of the nursing syndicate
• The association established under law No 115 of 1976 under the name
“union of nursing” have legal personality and is the representative
body for nurses and nurses enjoying Egyptian nationality.

Objectives of the union
• Up grading scientific and professional members and maintain dignity
and traditional of the profession.
• Apply principles to regulate the exercise of the profession and the
performance of their duties member of the association in the country
and monitor their implementation service.
• Collect a member and create aspirate of solidarity among them self.

• Contribute to a policy of nursing education and nurse services
improvement and follow up of scientific and applied research.
• Cooperation with trade union, association and organization and
exchange of information and experiences.
• Caring for member and their families healthy , socially, economically
and culturally.

Definition of Credentialing • Credentials are written documents that communicate to others the nature of one`s competence and provide evidence of one`s preparation to perform in a specific occupation. • Is a term applied to processes used to designate that an individual , program , institution or product have met established standards set by an agent (governmental ,non governmental) recognized as qualified to carry out this task.
  • 5. Health Care Accreditation • Is a practice that's implemented to ensure all necessary practitioners and places are up to par in terms of standards, competency, ethics and standing.
  • 6. Credentials Include • Certificates ,degrees ,and diploma awarded by educational institutions. • Legal licenses awarded by a government. • Recognition by a professional organization (certification) that focuses on specialty area.
  • 7. Certification • Is a credential provided by an organization rather than the state. • Usually granted after an applicant has completed an approved course of study and passed an examination . • Doesn’t confer the same legal right to the holder as does a license.
  • 8. Definition of Licensure • Means a restricted practice requiring a license , which gives ”a permission to practice “such licenses are usually issued to regulate some activity . That is deemed to be dangerous or threat to the person or the public.
  • 9. Definition of syndicate A temporary association of people or firms authorized to under take a duty or transact specific business.
  • 10. Purpose of credentialing 1) To advancing the safety of health care. 2) Improving the quality of health care. 3) Improving the process of health care. 4) Clarifying and defining the roles of the nurse and other member of the team. 5) Improving the delivery system organizational culture. 6) Providing professional support. 7) Shaping future healthcare delivery practice. 8) Improving job satisfaction.
  • 11. Accreditation process 1) Call for an application. 2) Complete and Submit application. 3) Upon receipt a packet will be mailed to you Containing: • Accreditation Manual. • Welcome letter. 4) An Accreditation team member is assigned to aid you through the process.

Accreditation process(cont.) 5) Conduct the Self Study: • Mission of Program. • Administrational Responsibilities. • Finances and Funds. • Student Services. • Instructional Design & Program Elements. • Physical Facilities. • Equipment and Tools. • Cooperative Training. • Instructor Qualifications.

Accreditation process(cont.) 6) Submit the Self Study to the review committee 7) Self Study is reviewed by the committee 8) Upon approval of the self study a Visiting Team is assigned 9) An on-site visit is scheduled 10) The one day on-site validation is executed and completed 11) Final Determination is made to grant accreditation & list the program in official directory

The future of credentialing in health care • Because credentialing in nursing involves so many aspects of education , licensure ,and certification ,it has confused the public , nurses , and other health care professionals . • The ideal credential clearing communicates qualifications and competence ; there for , it is important for nursing to have a credentialing system that can be understood by others . • Current changes are moving nursing closer to an effective credetianal system .

History of Nursing Licensure • Prior to the Nightingale era, no credentials were available to nurses. • The first true nursing credential was a certificate of completion issued to nursing graduates. In the late 19th century, nursing education varied widely in quality and length. • Programs varied from 6 weeks to 3 years and included as little education as on the job training to extensive apprenticeships. • Nursing leaders became united in the belief that a more uniform education and credentialing system was necessary so that nursing was seen as accountable to the general public.

History of Nursing Licensure(cont.) • In the late 19th century the first president of American Nurses Association , Isabel Hampton Robb , said that : “ In the absence of educational and professional standards , I am sadly forced to admit that the term ‘ trained nurse ‘ means any thing ,every thing and next to nothing “
  • 17. Types of licensure 1-Permissive licensure. 2-Mandatory Licensure. 3-Institutional Licensure.
  • 18. 1-Permissive licensure • Is a system where by an individual allows to practice nursing as long as they don’t the letters RN after their names. • It only protects “the registered nurse” title but not the practice of nursing it self.
  • 19. 2-Mandatory Licensure • Requires practitioners to have a license for providing a service. • There is mandatory licensure for physician , dentists , and nurses in all states.
  • 20. 3- Institutional Licensure • Although universally rejected by every nursing organization ,it has become a reality for many other types of health care workers. • Such as respiratory therapists and physical therapists .
  • 21. Importance of licensure 1) Provide greater protection to the public. 2) Provide safe and effective nursing care. 3) Distinguished between trained to provide nursing care from untrained . 4) A wariness of society needs and nurses meet this needs.
  • 22. Qualification for licensure applicants 1) Graduation from nursing school, pass standardized examination . 2) Graduation from high instituted of nursing or baccalaureate degree or diploma. 3) Mental and physical health status . 4) Clean C.V.

Obtaining a nursing licensure There are two different procedures for obtaining an initial licensure: 1-One is used for obtaining an initial licensure is called “ Licensure By Examination ‘’ • The applicant must be meet all provisions of the law (educational program, language proficiency ,and legal residency status ) and must pass standard examination. 2- Licensure by Endorsement • Nurses who move from one state to another can obtain recognize their nursing license from the original state of licensure. • It requires meet all previous of law and must apply for Licensure by examination.
  • 24. Establishment of the nursing syndicate • The association established under law No 115 of 1976 under the name “union of nursing” have legal personality and is the representative body for nurses and nurses enjoying Egyptian nationality.
