Physical layout: The client and therapist lie on

Slip of tongue (parapraxes)
According to Freud these are not accidental
rather indicate subconscious thoughts and
feelings.
For e.g.
Saying “thigh”
instead of “though”

9. DREAM ANALYSIS
In this technique the client’s dream are
discussed in detail.
According to Freud a person’s dream reflects
his subconscious and has a significant
meaning. (e.g expression of a wish fulfilment)
However this meaning may be hidden or
symbolic.

10. FREE ASSOCIATION
The client is encouraged to speak or write
freely about anything that comes to mind,
including current issues, fears, desires, dreams
and fantasies.
The focus is on recognizing, understanding and
overcoming the repressed emotions and
negative feelings.

11. CATHARSIS
A catharsis is an emotional purification &
cleansing.
It is a process of purging or releasing negative
emotions associated with a trauma and
thereby getting relief from, strong and
repressed, emotions.
Catharsis can be done with the therapist or
with a supportive friend.

12. RESISTANCE ANALYSIS
The person can refuse to talk over some topics
by avoiding, not speaking or being habitually
late for appointments to prevent the related
anxiety.
This resistant behavior of the person can
provide insight into conflicts particularly
troubling to the person in the therapy

13. ANALYSIS OF TRANSFERENCE
The client may transfer unconscious feeling
that may have been directed towards a
significant person in the past, onto the
therapist.
The therapist interprets the meaning of these
transference reactions to help the individual
become more aware of how the past
experiences could influence the present
behavior.
