What is knitting?
A process of fabric manufacturing by
converting yarn into loop form and then
these loops interlock together, which
form a structure, is called knitting.
KNITTED FABRIC
Knitted fabric may be described as structures produced
by the interloping of yarn.
In actual construction of the fabric, loops are formed;
then new loops drown trough previously formed loops.
The continuing addition of new loops creates the
knitted fabric.

TECHNICAL BACK (T/B)
WALES
COURSE
• HORIZONTAL ROWS OF STITCHES ARE CALLED
COURSE.
• COURSE RUN WIDTHWISE LIKE AS WEFT IN
WOVEN.
GAUGE
GOUGE IS THE CLOSENESS OF THE NEEDLES
IN THE KNITTING MACHINE IN ONE INCH.
GAUGE 1.5 TO 12 = HEAVY KNIT
GAUGE 12 TO 36 = LIGHT KNIT
WEFT KNIT
• The system of producing a fabric through the
interlocking of loops in widthwise direction.
• A weft knit is made with a single yarn looped
horizontally to form a row, or course, with each row
building on the previous one.
• A hand-knitted fabric is a weft knit.
WARP KNIT
The system of producing
fabric through the
interlocking of loops in
lengthwise direction.
A warp knit is made with
numerous parallel yarns
that are looped vertically
at the same time.
A different yarn usually
one yarn for each knitting
needle makes each stitch
in a course.
LOOP
LOOP IS THE FUNDAMENTAL
UNIT FORMED BY THE
BANDING OF YARN INTO A
“Ω” SHAPE.
STITCHES
THE SMALLEST FUNDAMENTAL UNIT
IN KNITTED FABRIC.
STITDHES ARE PRODUCED BY A
KNITTED LOOP PULLED THROUGH A
PREVIOUSLY FORMED LOOP.
BASIC LOOP OR STITCHES TYPE
PLAIN STITCH
PURL STITCH
MISS STITCH
TUCK STITCH
TRANSFER STITCH
PLAIN STITCH
PLAIN STITCH IS THE BASIC
KNITTING STITCH.IT IS ALSO
CALLED THE KNIT STITCH.
PURL STITCH
THE STITCH IS
ACTUALLY REVERSE
OF PLAIN STITCH.
MISS STITCH
A MISS IS CREATED WHEN ONE OR MORE
KNITTING NEEDLES ARE DEACTIVATED AND
DO NOT MOVE TO POSSION TO ACCEPT
YARN. YARN MERELY PASSED BY NO STICH
IS FORMED.
TUCK STITCH
A TUCK STITCH IS FORMED WHEN A
KNITTING NEEDLE HOLDS ITS OLD
LOOP AND THEN RECEIVE NEW YARN,
TWO LOOPS WILL THEN COLLECT IN
ONE NEEDLE HOOK.
TRANSFER STITCH
A TRANSFER STITCH IS FORMED
WHEN LOOPS TRANSFER FROM
ONE NEEDLE TO ANOTHER
DURING THE KNITTING CYCLE TO
FORM HOLE OR LACE DESIGN.
TECHNICAL FACE
LIKE PLAIN STITCH
RUNNING VERTICALLY.
TECHNICAL BACK
HORIZONTAL FLOATS.
FLOATS ARE CALLED LAPS OR UNDER LAPS.
BASIC CLASSES OF WEFT KNITTED FABRIC
JOURSEY KNIT FABRIC
RIB KNIT FABRIC
PURL KNIT FABRIC
JURSEY KNIT FABRIC
JURSEY KNIT FABRIC IS ALSO KNOWN AS SINGLE
KNIT.
FABRICS OF THIS TYPE HAVE ALL LOOPS DRAWN
TO ONE SIDE OF THE FABRIC (ALL PLAIN
STITCHES).
CAN BE EASILY RECOGNIZED BY THE FACE, THAT
THE SMOOTH SIDE IS THE FACE.
RIB KNIT FABRIC
MADE WITH ALTERNATE WALE
OF PLAIN AND PURL STITCH
ON BOTH SIDE OF THE FABRIC
PURL KNIT FABRIC

COLOR STRIPE
DESIGN BY CONSTRUCTION OF FEBRIC
JACQUARD
COMPUTER CONTROLLED DESIGN
COLOR STRIPE
HORIZONTAL COLOR STRIPE IN WEFT KNIT IS THE
SIMPLEST DESIGNER TECHNIQUE.
REQUIRING MERELY THE PROPER SELECTION AND
SEQUENCE OF THE YARN TO FED TO THE KNITTING
MACHINE.
STRIPES ARE TWO TYPES:
1.FEEDER STRIPE
2.ENGINEERED STRIPE
FEEDER STRIPE
WHERE REPEAT OF STRIPE IS
ABOUT 2”.
ENGINEERED STRIPE
SIZE OR REPEAT OF THE
STRIPE IS BIGGER THAN 2”.
DESIGN BY CONSTRUCTION OF FEBRIC
DESIGN EFFECT CAN BE ACIVED MECHANICALLY
OR ELECTRO MECHANICALLY CONTROLLING HOW
KNITTING NEEDLE WILL BEHAVE WHEN A YARN
PASSES BY THEM DURING THE KNITTING PROCESS.
A PLAIN, PURL, MISS, TUCK, TRANSFER, RACKING
STITCHES WILL BE FORMED.
**MISS STITCH = PIQUE FABRIC
**TUCK STITCH= LA-COSTE FABRIC
**TRANSFER STITCH= POINTELLE FABRIC
PIQUE FABRIC
LA-COSTE FABRIC
POINTELLE FABRIC
JACQUARD
THE MOST SHOPHISTICATED AND VERSATILE
OF THE VARIATION PATTERNING
MECHANISM IS THE JACQUARD SYSTEM. IN
JACQUARD SYSTEM EACH NEEDLE CAN
INDIVIDUALLY CONTROLLED BY PUNCHED
CARD OR TAPES.
COMPUTER CONTROLLED DESIGN
MOST MODERN SYSTEM FOR
CREATING DESIGN IN
KNITTED FABRIC CONSISTS
OF
CAD/CAM. (COMPUTER

FULLY FASHIONED KNIT
A METHOD OF SHAPING A
KNITTED FABRIC DURING THE
KNITTING PROCESS IS POPULAR IN
SWEATER MANUFACTURING.
HIGH PILE KNIT
A SPEACIAL TYPE OF JERSEY KNIT MADE BY A UNIQUE
PROCEDURE WHICH INVOLVES FEEDING STAPLE FIBER
IN THE FORM OF SILVER INTO THE KNIT MATERIAL
WHICH THE YARN ARE PASSING THROUGH THE
KNITTING NEEDLES AS THE FABRIC IS BEING DONE. IN
THIS PROCESS IMITATION FUR/ FAKE FUR FABRIC
PRODUCED USUALLY USED IN THE COLLAR.
KNITTED TERRY
KNITTED TERRY FABRICS ARE JERSEY KNIT MATERIALS.
KNITTED WITH TWO YARNS FEEDING SIMULTANEOUSLY INTO THE SAME
KNITTING NEEDLES.
WHEN FABRIC IS KNITTED, ONE YARN APPEARS IN THE FACE AND OTHER ON THE
BACK AS LOOP PILES, WHICH REMAIN UNCUT.
1.TERRY(WITHOUT BRUSHED)
2.FRENCH TERRY (MAY OR MAY NOT BE BRUSHED)
3.FLECHE (BRUSHED ONE OR BOTH SIDES)
TERRY(WITHOUT
BRUSHED)
FRENCH TERRY (MAY OR
MAY NOT BE BRUSHED)
FLECHE (BRUSHED
ONE OR BOTH SIDES)
KNITTED VALOUR
KNITTED VALOUR FABRICS ARE MADE
IN SAME WAY LIKE KNITTED
TERRY.AFTER THE FABRIC IS KNITTED,
THE LOOP PILES CUT BY A PROCESS
CALLED SHEARING AND THEN BRUSHED
INTERLOCK
INTERLOCK KNITTED FABRIC IS
VARIATION OF RIB KNITS, WHERE
COLUMNS OF WALES ARE
DIRECTLY BEHIND EACH OTHER.
DROPPED STITCH/NEEDLE
USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH KNITING
FAILURES AS THEY CAN HOWEVER BE
EMPLOYED TO PATTERN A FABRIC BY
CREATING “LADDER”
THERMAL
Thermal is the kind of fabric, wear
all those cold winter days – warm,
thin, and perfect for layering.
