2. INTRODUCTION
Language is a medium for communication. It helps us to
convey our messages to others. In the world there are a lot of known languages
and unknown languages. And all these languages came into form out of
necessities, when man wanted to pass information to others. English language is
a worldwide language. It is the language of Sciences, technologies and trade and
industry. What all these point out are the need of being familiarized with
English language. It has become something inevitable in our daily life. So we
need to acquire this knowledge. Many learning resources such as books, videos
and audio clips are available for learning English. Libraries make possible the
availability of these learning resources to learners.
A library is a collection of sources of information and
similar resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or
borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may be a
physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both. A library’s collection can
include books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints,
documents, microform, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, e-books, databases
and other formats. Libraries range in size from a few shelves of books to several
million items. A library is organized for use and maintained by a public body,
an institution, a corporation, or a private individual. Public and institutional
collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to or
cannot afford to purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material
no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional
assistance with their research.
In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the
services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and
at interpreting information needs. Libraries often provide quiet areas for
studying, and they also often offer common areas to facilitate group study and
collaboration. Libraries often provide public facilities for access to their
electronic resources and the Internet. Modern libraries are increasingly being
redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats
and from many sources. They are extending services beyond the physical walls
of a building, by providing material accessible by electronic means, and by
providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing very large
amounts of information with a variety of digital tools.
3. CONTENT
Three sets of roles that libraries play in education are
identified. In the first place, libraries provide access to education by teaching
information skills, by providing leadership and expertise in the use of
information and information technologies, and by participating in networks that
enhance access to resources outside the school or community. Secondly,
libraries help ensure equity in education by: (1) helping children start school
ready to learn; (2) addressing the needs of student most at risk; (3) providing
access to information and ideas unimpeded by social, cultural, and economic
constraints; (4) ensuring free and equal access to information and ideas without
geographic constraints; and (5) helping students stay free of drugs and violence,
in an environment conducive to learning. A third role is that of impacting
academic achievement for individuals and assisting them in lifelong learning,
preparing individuals for productive employment, promoting the enjoyment of
reading, promoting functional literacy among adults, preparing individuals for
responsible citizenship.
In today’s global world, the importance of English can’t be
denied and ignored since English is the most common language spoke. English
literature is the world’s greatest and biggest literature. As a foreign language
English is a difficult language. Conscious and deliberate effort is needed for
acquiring it. Reading is an effective means to grasp the language rapidly. The
library is an important resource for English language learners in everywhere.
However, extensive research shows that schools that have relied on their
libraries to support student growth, specifically in the areas of literacy,
information literacy, technological skills, and access to resources and
equipment, have seen increased motivation, higher assessment scores, and
ultimately greater graduation rates. School libraries and school librarians
provide teachers with materials and the refinement of research skills that can be
infused into their teaching practices. It helps early learners become more
experienced readers, and also promote motivation and engagement in reading.
The more access that early learners have to books and materials, along with
increased access to literacy supports and technological instruction that school
libraries and school librarians provide, the greater the likelihood is that they will
develop into accomplished readers. Students come from a wide range of
backgrounds, and this diversity requires a network of supports that libraries can
provide to help all students progress through their educational pathways. In
4. addition, libraries provide an environment where students can utilize
technological equipment that they may not have access to outside of school.
There are different types of libraries. E- Library is the latest
one. A digital library is a special library with a focused collection of digital
objects that can include texts, visual materials, audio materials, and video
material, stored as electronic media formats, along with means for organizing,
storing and retrieving and files and media contained in the library collection.
The electronic content can be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer
networks. An electronic library is a type of information retrieval system. It is
not confined to a particular location or so called building it is distributed all
over the world. The user can get his/ her information on his own computer
screen by using the Internet. Actually it is a network of multimedia system,
which provides fingertip access.
Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is an
Autonomous Inter- University Centre of University Grants Commission,
Government of India, involved in creating infrastructure for sharing of library
and information resources and services among Academic and Research
institutions . INFLIBNET is involved in modernizing university libraries in
India and connecting them as well as information centers in the country through
a nation- wide high speed data network using the state of art technologies for
the optimum utilization of information.
English is a language which contributes a greater part in
world’s literature. Various forms of libraries play as a pathway to that. It is a
main resource through which one can completely depend for understanding
world culture, through world literature. Reading skill is one of the essential
needs to acquire English language knowledge. It enables a reader to develop
good language skills, and better comprehension. It plays a major role to
cultivate linguistic competence.
CONCLUSION
Libraries have a significant role in learning of foreign
language such as English. From primary classes to research level a child who
needs to study English must step into any library. For any language students’
library is an effective resource also. The provision of periodicals and
newspapers is as much a function of the library as the provision of books. It
5. enables the reader as a social being and also enriches knowledge. By repeated
reading the language becomes acquired and the reader becomes a master in that
language. While reading various books students are able to grasp the basic
grammatical usage in English. Thereby they can erase errors in the spoken and
written forms. English is a language which has millions of vocabulary. If one
knows more vocabulary he would be more fluent in language. Another specialty
of English is that it is a revolutionary language that means it has change over
period of time. One who reads number of books in English can understand the
changes in language, both old and new usage in English. Here is the role of a
library. Most of the library contains texts of various periods. E- Libraries or
digital libraries also plays significant role in providing materials for English
learning.
