I. Treat social media marketing as an
investment for long term
Social media marketing is an investment
• Social media marketing is a long term affair
• It is a strategic marketing activity, not just a sales tactic
• Build your presence , rather than rushing with your stories
• A carefully planned out and built social media presence does
pay off quite well
II. Choose your platforms and
frequency of communication wisely
Choose platforms wisely
• Choices of platforms to be driven by nature of product/service
& brand positioning.
• Don’t miss the platforms which have low user base but fit in
quite well with your offering/positioning.
– For example, if your product/service is a great technological
innovation, social media sites where you can publish whitepapers is
recommended for you. It won’t have user base as large as Facebook.
But it will have users who appreciate and endorse your work.
Choose frequency of communication
• Don’t trap yourself by being overambitious or too strict with
the frequency of communication.
• It is ok if you are not able post twice daily or daily. However, it
is not ok if you post thrice daily in a week and not posting at
all next week.
• No social media site forces a frequency of posting on you –
but overambitious plan makes you post something which is
not worthwhile.
III. Balance your topics of
communication
Balance topics of communication
• Don’t just bombard your organization’s news, greatness of
your organization, people and your product/service.
• Mix that with some nice stuff which your audience may like.
‘All work, no fun’ doesn’t work.
• Also, do remember that ‘all fun, no work’ is useless. You are
not on social media to just entertain or do some social
service.
So, try to engage your audience and subtly create a pull for your
offering instead of pushing it.
IV. Design for 2-way
communication
Design 2-way communication
• Things like polls, quiz contests etc work sometimes. However,
they need to be designed carefully. Don’t do for the sake of it.
• 2-way communication doesn’t just mean achieving audience
engagement through some interesting or funny stuff.
• Use it to make your happy customers write good things about
you. Be open to receive and publish suggestions (written in
well-mannered way) by your customers.
V. Thoroughly understand how
targeting works in paid campaigns
Targeting with paid campaigns
• Targeting is like never before. Along with demography, you
can also target people with specific interests and even
behaviors.
• Each penny you spend is more worth than before.
• A good consultant/social media marketer can certainly help
you make the most of your spend on social media marketing.
