3. INTRODUCTION
Unconventional wind turbines are those that differ significantly from the most common types in use. As of
2012, the most common type of wind turbine is the three-bladed upwind horizontal-axis wind
turbine (HAWT) and vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT).
The wide variety of designs reflects ongoing commercial, technological, and inventive interests in
harvesting wind resources.
4. Latest in the series of modification is a technological leap forward and a revolution in wind
energy. A more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way to produce energy
called Vortex Bladeless which works on the Principle of Vortex Shedding.
5. In fluid dynamics, vortex shedding is an oscillating flow that takes place when a fluid such
as air or water flows past a bluff (as opposed to streamlined) body at certain velocities,
depending on the size and shape of the body.
In this flow, vortices are created at the back of the body and detach periodically from
either side of the body.
The fluid flow past the object creates alternating low-pressure vortices on the
downstream side of the object. The object will tend to move toward the low-pressure zone.
Vortex Shedding
6. Vortex shedding was one of the causes proposed for the failure of the original Tacoma
Narrows Bridge (Galloping Gertie) in 1940.
A thrill ride, "VertiGo" at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio suffered vortex shedding during
the winter of 2001, causing one of the three towers to collapse. The ride was closed for
the winter at the time.
7. Dr David Yanez was looking for a new way to generate wind energy and seeing the
video of the swaying Tacoma Narrows Bridge brought him inspiration.
The aero elastic fluttering was enough to cause the bridge to collapse, and this led
Yanez to believe that the motions caused from wind could be put to more
productive use.
8. The Vortex Bladeless device is type of Unconventional Wind Turbine which deliberately
maximizes vortex shedding, converting wind energy to fluttering of a light-weight vertical
pole, then captures that energy with a generator at the bottom of the pole.
What is Vortex Bladeless ?
9. Vortex's innovation comes from its unusual shape, where a fiberglass and carbon fibre mast
oscillates in the wind taking advantage of the vortex shedding effect. A carbon fibre rod sits at the
bottom of the mast and its movement inside a linear alternator generates the electricity.
10. Vortex doesn’t just eliminate the blades. It is deliberately designed it
to have no parts in contact at all (no gears, linkages, etc). This way
Vortex becomes cheap and easy to maintain.
Looking somewhat like a giant reed gently swaying in the wind, the
new Vortex bladeless wind-driven generator prototype produces
electricity with very few moving parts, on a very small footprint, and
in almost complete silence.
If You compare it with a conventional wind turbine, vortex bladeless
would cost around 50 percent or even less.
11. Working Principle
Instead of capturing energy through the
circular motion of a propellor, Vortex
turbines take advantage of a physical
phenomenon known as vorticity — an
aerodynamic effect that creates a
pattern of spinning vortices or
whirlwinds.
What happens is that, the structure attracts whirlwinds which develop at determined
frequencies depending on the speed at which the wind is travelling.
When the Frequency of the whirl winds or vortex coincides with the frequency of the
structure, the energy is absorbed, reaching at a peak due to aerostatic coupling
12. As the aero-elasticcoupling increases,sotoodoesenergy generation.
Instead of Turning, what the wind turbinedoes is oscillate therebyproducing movement and displacement.
This system is based on the same principle as an alternator in electromagnetic induction.
This movement andspeed is then multiplied magnetically without the useof gear assemblies or ball bearings
Andthis is how mechanicalenergy gets convertedinto electrical energy.
13. it relies on the oscillation of its reed-like mast in reaction
to air vortices to move a series of magnets located in the
joint near its base to generate electricity.
This kinetic energy is then used to power an alternator,
which multiplies the frequency of the tower’s oscillation and
converts the motion in to usable electricity.
The first model to be made available commercially will be known as the Mini: a 4 kW, 12.5 meter
(41 ft) high unit intended for residential and small-scale commercial application.
A larger model, dubbed the Gran, is also being designed and is a unit with a greater than one-
megawatt output intended for use in large-scale power generation for industry and electricity
companies.

15. The team is currently negotiating potential locations and conditions for this
project. So as to get as much data as possible on the performance of Vortex in a
variety of conditions.
By the Next Year they would have started their Pilot Study in India, following which
they would launch their commercial prototypes too.
Basically there will be Three main Prototypes to hit the Market.

27. Conclusion
When it comes to clean energy, wind power is considered one of the most reliable and sustainable
alternatives.
And thanks to the combination of improved technology and diminishing prices, its adoption has
increased in recent years.
Innovations like these, are what is leading to a revolution in wind power, and some very optimistic
appraisals for its adoption.
In 2014, the Department of Energy estimated that by 2050, wind power could account for as
much as 35% of the US' electrical production.
An even more optimistic appraisal came from the Global Wind Energy Council and Greenpeace
International. Together, they released areport in 2014 that stated how wind power could account
for as much as 25 to 30% of global electricity demands by 2050.
SO , If we look at the future of Vortex Bladeless I looks Damn Bright.
