weight without bending or breaking. You'll also need to size the crutches to correspond to your
patient's height and arm measurements. You can find the supplies you need at a lumberyard or home-
improvement store.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
3 2-by-2-inch pine boards
Circular saw
Table saw
Power drill
Screws
Pencil
Instructions
o 1
Measure from the armpit to the ground with the tape measure, and make a note of the
measurement.
o 2
Measure from the armpit to the bottom of the wrist, and make a note of the
measurement.
o 3
Transfer the armpit-to-ground measurement in Step 1 to a 2-by-2-inch board. This will
give you the length of your crutches. Cut the board to this length with the circular saw.
Repeat this step with a second 2-by-2 board.
o 4
Cut down the center of the two crutch boards to within 12 inches of the bottom, using
the table saw. Do not split the bottom 12 inches of the boards. These solid 12-inch
sections will form the base of each crutch.

o 5
Measure and cut four pieces of the third 2-by-2, each 4 1/2 inches long.
o 6
Place one of the 4 1/2-inch pieces at the top of the first crutch and perpendicular to it,
centering the short piece and placing the top edge flush with the top of the split section.
Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole into each side of the wood using the power drill. Secure the
wood with screws. Repeat this step with the second crutch piece.
o 7
Review the measurement from Step 2. Transfer this measurement to the crutches to
mark where handles should go. For instance, if the measurement in Step 2 was 24
inches, measure 24 inches down from the top of the crutch. Use the pencil to mark this
point on each crutch.
o 8
Create handles for your crutches. Place one 4 1/2-inch piece of 2-by-2 on the pencil
mark you have just made on the first crutch. Drill pilot holes into the wood, and secure
the pieces with screws. Repeat this step with the other crutch.
