4. ituada na Amazônia, uma das
poucas regiões da Terra que
ainda está em grande parte
preservada, a MINERAÇÃO RIO
DO NORTE S. A. (MRN) tem
plena consciência da sua responsabilidade
quanto à manutenção das condições
ambientais originais.
Desde o primeiro ano de operação, a
empresa vem concentrando seus esforços
para redução do impacto ambiental, em
seus cinco pontos principais:
• proibição da caça nas áreas de
influência do complexo;
• recuperação das áreas mineradas;
• eliminação do lançamento de
partículas sólidas na atmosfera, a
partir das chaminés dos secadores
de bauxita;
• deposição do rejeito gerado no
beneficiamento do minério;
• recuperação do lago Batata.

RECUPERAÇÃO DAS ÁREAS
MINERADAS
D
esde o início de suas operações
em 1979, existia, com relação
às atividades de lavra, uma
grande questão: como
recuperar as áreas mineradas?
Várias alternativas de plantio foram
consideradas para a reabilitação dessas áreas:
• espécies exóticas (eucalipto);
• pastagens;

1981. Até 1998, foram reflorestados
866 hectares. O objetivo principal é
buscar a formação de uma floresta com
características e biodiversidade que se
aproximem da floresta primária.
O reflorestamento é efetuado com a
reposição do solo orgânico e utilização

quanto:
• Ao crescimento das espécies plantadas nas áreas reflorestadas;
mecanismos de sucessão vegetal;
longo prazos. Atualmente investe-se, em média, US$ 150 mil por
ano nesse monitoramento.

CONTROLE DE EMISSÃO
DE PARTÍCULAS SÓLIDAS
A
partir da entrada em
operação dos secadores de
bauxita, a MRN buscou a
melhor solução para eliminar o
problema da emissão de
partículas sólidas na atmosfera (argila e
bauxita fina).
• Vila Velha (AR-02)
• Escritório da Mina (AR-03)
• Antigo Alojamento B (AR-04)

DEPOSIÇÃO DO REJEITO GERADO
NO BENEFICIAMENTO DO MINÉRIO
A
pesar das ações postas em prática
pela empresa, objetivando a
redução do impacto ambiental,
terem apresentado os melhores
resultados possíveis, a MRN
deparava-se ainda com um grande desafio: a
deposição do rejeito gerado no beneficiamento
e vila residencial.
O impacto no lago Batata por rejeito
sedimentado e em suspensão, lançado ao longo
de dez anos, foi inevitável. Com a previsão de
sucessivos aumentos de produção, a MRN
tomou a iniciativa de buscar novas alternativas
para a deposição do rejeito.
11
12. 3
revegetadas.
Portanto, a partir

tecnologia já somaram US$ 450 mil.

RECUPERAÇÃO
DO LAGO BATATA
O
s estudos no lago Batata foram
motivados pela necessidade de se
conhecer os desdobramentos
advindos do lançamento do rejeito
da lavagem de bauxita no lago,
no período de novembro de 1979 a novembro de
Fora - UFJF (Minas Gerais).
• Área permanentemente alagada (lago);
• Área alagável (igapó).
No lago, as atividades tratam do
monitoramento da qualidade da água, do
monitoramento limnológico, dos sedimentos
de fundo e da comunidade de peixes. O
15
16. 4
4.1- Resultados obtidos no lago Batata
Among the main results which show that Batata Lake is recovering its
ecological equilibrium, the following may be mentioned:
• Recolonização da área por peixes / Recolonization of the area by fishes;
• Baixa taxa de mortalidade das espécies plantadas / Low mortality rate of the
planted species;
rate of vegetal surface of the areas where revegetation is going on;
• Início da sucessão natural em alguns plantios / Natural succession has started in

21. ocated in the Amazon Region,
one of the few remnant regions of
the planet which, in large
proportion, is still untouched and
preserved, MINERAÇÃO RIO DO
NORTE S.A. (MRN) is fully aware
of its responsibility to keep the original
environment conditions.
Since the first year of operation, MRN has
been concentrating efforts towards
minimization of the impact on the
environment by tackling the following five
main aspects:
• prohibition of hunting in the areas of
influence of its industrial complex;
• rehabilitation of the mine-out areas;
• elimination of the pouring, into the
atmosphere, of the solid particles from
the bauxite dryers chimneys;
• disposal of the bauxite beneficiation
tailing;
• rehabilitation of Batata Lake.
21
22. 1
REVEGETATION OF THE
MINED-OUT AREAS
S
ince the beginning of its operations,
in 1979, there was a great question
for MRN related to the mining
activities: how to have the mined-
out areas restored to its original
characteristics?
Various revegetation alternatives were
considered for rehabilitation of such areas by
using:
• exotic species (eucalyptus);
• pastures;
• fruit trees; and
• native species.
Pursuant to its policy of preserving the
original characteristics of the rain forest, MRN
opted for recovering the mined-out areas with
native species and in large scale, this was a
pioneer experience in the Amazon.
Seed production and planting methods
were improved over the years and the results
obtained both in the restoration of the flora
and maintenance of the fauna were
successful.
22
23. 1
1.1 - Reforestation of mined-out areas
Reforestation activities by MRN started in
1981. By 1998, 866 hectares have already been
reforested. The basic purpose of such activities is
to restore, as close as possible, the characteristics
and biodiversity of the original rain forest.
Prior to the beginning of the revegetation with
rain forest native species, the previously removed
organic topsoil is returned to the mined-out
areas. Eighty different native species on average
are yearly planted by MRN, approximately 2,500
seedlings per hectare.

1.2 - Reforestation monitoring program
As the reforestation activities in MRN (started in 1981)
were a pioneer activity, it took some time until the method
currently in use was reached. And yet, over the years, it was
felt the necessity of measuring scientifically the results yielded.
So, with the objetive of evaluating the method effectiveness
of the mined-out areas reforestation, MRN made up a
reforestation monitoring program. A Five-Year Plan then
produced provides yearly evaluations, which started in 1996.
In order to execute this Monitoring Program, agreements
were made with two famous institutes, recognized worldwide:
Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi and Instituto Nacional de
Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA). The purpose of this
reforestation monitoring program is to provide specific
information on the following:
• Growth of species planted in the reforested areas;
• Enrichment of the species on the reforested areas through
vegetal succession mechanisms;
• Evolution of the soil fertility state by following up its physical,
chemical and biological properties.
This follow-up process will make it possible to reach a
reforestation diagnosis to support designing short, medium
and long term plans of action. Currently, the yearly investment
in the monitoring program averages approximately US$150
thousand.

CONTROL OF SOLIDS
EMISSION
S
oon after the bauxite dryers went
on stream, MRN undertook seeking
the best solution to eliminate solids
emission into the atmosphere (clay
and fine bauxite). The installation
of gas washers which precipitate the
suspended particles was the selected
alternative.
This system is exceedingly efficient
(efficiency in excess of 98%) and the dryers
dust problem is superseded since 1982.
The paving of Porto Trombetas streets and
alleys, as well as the Port-Mine road, was also
a significant contribution to reduce the
suspended solids volume (dust).
25
26. 2
2.1 - Monitoring of emissions into the atmosphere
In 1991, MRN started monitoring the suspended and
inhalable particles in the area of influence of the Porto
Trombetas Industrial Complex and Saracá Mine, the
purpose of such monitoring being to evaluate the
environment quality.
The installed air sampling system comprises four stations:
• Main office
• Old B Quarter
• Old Village
• Mine Office
Each station is equipped with two sampling units:
• Hi-vol: measures the suspended particles
• PM-19: measures the inhalable particles

BAUXITE BENEFICIATION
TAILING DISPOSAL
D
espite the best possible results
of the actions taken by the
company to minimize the
damages to the environment, a
major challenge still remained
to be striven and won by MRN: the bauxite
beneficiation tailing disposal.
During the project construction stage, no
technology to avoid damages to the
environment by tailing disposal was available;
moreover, tight construction schedule and
budget, allied to the low level of ecological
awareness then prevalent, led MRN to the
choice of disposing such residues into a
natural lake (Batata Lake), in the vicinities of
the port industrial installations and townsite.
This practice remained unchanged over a
period of ten years, and the damages to
Batata Lake caused by settled and suspended
tailings were inevitable and undeniable. As
successive production expansions were
contemplated, MRN decided to seek new
tailing disposal alternatives.
27
28. 3
3.1 - Tailing ponds
In 1986, after years of studies and analysis of
ten alternative solutions, the company chose an
entirely clean one: return the beneficiation tailing
to ponds constructed on the mined-out areas.
After such residues are settled, the areas are
revegetated.
MRN invested approximately US$ 82 million to
transfer the Washing Plant from the port to the
mine area. The implementation of this new tailing
disposal concept eliminated the possibility of
having rivers and lakes silted up, or large areas of
the rain forest inundated. From November 1989
on, with this new concept implemented, the
bauxite beneficiation tailing is disposed onto the
mined-out areas.
The time required to have the tailing reservoirs
filled up with the bauxite washing residues causes
some delay in the revegetation process.

29. 3
3.2 - Tailing ponds revegetation
From November 1989 on, MRN started implementing a
revegetation technology, pioneer in bauxite mini+ng: discharge the
beneficiation tailing onto the mined out areas - the so called tailing
ponds. Thus, an absolutely clean tailing disposal technology,
harmless to the environment, was created.
In 1991, under an agreement then signed with the Centro
Nacional de Pesquisa em Agrobiologia - EMBRAPA (National Center
for Agrobiology Research) and the Departamento de Solos da
Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Soil Department of the Viçosa Town
Federal University), the activities envisioning development of the
tailing ponds revegetation technology started. Their peculiar physical
and chemical characteristics and properties are not fully known yet.
This technology comprises utilization of plants associated with
nitrogen-fixing bacteria and micro-rhyzobium fungi which increase
the soil nutrient extraction capacity, mainly phosphorus, and this
eliminates the need to use organic topsoil and large volumes of
organic fertilizers as well.
Over the past few years, various experiments were carried out.
From the end of this year on, MRN starts using the technology
developed in the first tailing pond, which has already been released
for revegetation. The investments in research and technology
development have already reached US$ 450 thousand.

REHABILITATION
OF BATATA LAKE
T
he bauxite washing tailing
disposal into Batata Lake from
November 1979 to November
1989 required that studies and
researches were carried out to
evaluate how far the lake had been
damaged. These studies started in 1987, at
first by Universidade Federal do Rio de
Janeiro - URFJ, but currently Universidade
Federal de Juiz de Fora - Minas Gerais -
shares this effort.
Such studies cover two distinct areas:
• Permanently inundated area (lake);
• Floodable area (flood land).
The activities in the lake comprise
monitoring of the water quality, limnology,
bottom sediments and fishes community. The
purpose is to evaluate the damages the tailing
caused to the ecosystem, since the fishes are
important biological indicators in measuring
this effect, and also if the mitigating actions
have been efficient.
30
31. 4
4.1 - Results obtained in Batata Lake
The floodland remains inundated during six
months of the year, and exposed only during the
dry season. By following up this cycle, revegetation
techniques with floodland bush species are being
developed envisioning recolonization of the silted-
up areas of the lake. From 103 hectares where
recolonization is possible, 28 ha have already been
planted.
The extremely encouraging results currently
obtained show that MRN, UFRJ and UFJF joint
effort is working out.
There is a strategic factor in this activity: in
addition to the technology development, this joint
effort has promoted the academic formation of
professionals in the environmental field with
experience in the interaction with private concerns.
There are 14 master thesis and 7 doctor’s degree
thesis already concluded on the ongoing activities
and studies related to Batata Lake, a subject
practically unknown until the end of the 80’s. This
is a clear example of this assertion.
