Did you know, for example, that Australia is the biggest island in the world? It is only a
little smaller that the United States of America, and it is bigger than Western Europe.
Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent. Australia lies between
the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 11 000 km southwest of
North America and about 8200 km southeast of mainland Asia.
Flag of Australia
Australian Coat of Arms
• The best animal, the kangaroo, and the world’s second largest bird, the flightless emu
are represented on the country’s coat of arms.
The Australian National University
• The Australian National University – commonly abbreviated to ANU, is a
public teaching and research university located in Canberra.
Parliament House, Canberra
• Parliament House, Canberra was opened in 1988, replacing the provisional
Parliament House building opened in 1927.
Government House
• Government House, Canberra, also known as "Yarralumla", is the official
residence of the Governor-General.
Everlastings on Mount Hotham,
located in Victoria
There are six different states in Australia: Western Australia,
Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South
Australia.
New South Wales has the Blue Mountains.
• They are covered with forest of blue- colored eucalyptus trees. The air above the forest
contains millions of microscopic drops of eucalyptus oil. When the sun shines, the air of the
Blue Mountains is a real, beautiful blue.
National symbols of Australia
Opal
• Australia is an industrial country. They extract there coal, nickel, zinc and gold. Australia is one
of the most important producers of metals and minerals.
Wallaby
• There are many animals in Australia that you cannot see anywhere else. Did you know that?
Of course, you did! I personally divide Australian animals into three categories^ the good.
The bad. The ugly. I think, it’s reasonable. Talking of the good animals. We should mention
kangaroos in the first place.
Emu
Koala
• Wombats and koalas have many similarities and are probably related. Both have pockets inside
their mouths to store food and neither has a tail. The number of koalas is getting smaller. This is
partly because of fumes from bush fires.
Platypus
• The strangest of all Australian mammals is the platypus. The platypus is a shy animal,
usually feeding under water at night. It has a mouth shaped like the the flat bill of a
duck which acts like a radar. It tells the animal where worms and insects can be found.
The platypus swims with its eyes and ears closed!
Kookaburra
• There are about 800 kinds of birds, among
them the kookaburra, the Australian bird
whose call sounds like loud laughter.
Uluru
Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia
• Australia is a constitutional monarchy like Great Britain. The British monarch, Queen
Elizabeth II, is also queen of Australia and country’s head of state. But the queen has little
power in the Australia government. She serves mainly as a symbol of a long historical tie
between Great Britain and Australia.
Sydney Opera House
• The famous Sydney Opera House looks like waves when they break on the
beach. It was designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utson.
The capital of Australia
• The city is the political and
administrative capital of Australia.
It is also the centre of the nation’s
history, learning and research.
Canberra is a beautiful city with
lovely parks, wide streets and a big
artificial lake which has been
named after the city’s designer. It is
the home of a beautiful Australian
War Memorial, the National
Library, the National University,
Australian Academy of Science, as
well as Parliament House, which is
the centre for Australian
government.

AUSTRALIA
• Did you know, for example, that Australia is the biggest island in the world? It is
only a little smaller that the United States of America, and it is bigger than
Western Europe.
Did you know that Australia is one of the oldest lands in the world?
A long line of mountains runs from the north to the south of the east coast. It is
called the Great Dividing Range because it divides the green, wet coast of eastern
Australia from the hot dry lands in the centre.
Australia has three different climates. In the north, the weather is tropical- hot
and wet. In the centre, the climate is very dry, and the land is mainly desert. In
the south, it is pleasant with cool winters and warm summers. The four great
deserts of central Australia cover 2 000 000 square kilometres.
There are six different states in Australia: Western Australia, Queensland, New
South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. There are also two
territories: Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory.
Each Australian State has its own government and its own capital city. The
States Capitals are Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide.
• Where do all Australians live? In fact most of them (85 per cent) live in the
cities of the east coast. But even these cities are not very dig: There are only
16 million people in Australia, and it’s a very big country.
Australia is a very rich country. It has gold, silver, iron, coal, and many
precious metals. Oil and natural gas help to build big industries. Victoria,
the south-eastern state, has a large number of industries. Oil is no problem
for them. Sydney is the best known place in New South Wales. In fact, it’s
the best known place in Australia. New South Wales has the Blue
Mountains. They are covered with forests of blue- coloured eucalyptus trees.
The air above the forest contains millions of microscopic drops of eucalyptus
oil. When the sun shines, the air of the Blue Mountains is a real, beautiful
blue.
The Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Queensland is a garden under the sea.
There are 1400 different kinds of fish, and more than 300kinds of coral.
Tropical fruit and flowers grow on the beautiful islands. It is not surprising
that more holiday makers come to Queensland every year.
South Australia is the driest of all the states, but it has the Murray River,
which brings greenness and life to the state’s south-east corner.
Tasmania, the island south of Australia, is small. It is the same size as
England. There are no deserts in Tasmania. It often rains, both in winter
and summer. Only half a million people live in Tasmania, and a large part of
the island is still covered with wild, beautiful rainforests. These forests are of
wonderful flowers and interesting animals, like the little Tasmanian devil.

Australia

  • 2. Did you know, for example, that Australia is the biggest island in the world? It is only a little smaller that the United States of America, and it is bigger than Western Europe. Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent. Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 11 000 km southwest of North America and about 8200 km southeast of mainland Asia.
  • 4. Australian Coat of Arms • The best animal, the kangaroo, and the world’s second largest bird, the flightless emu are represented on the country’s coat of arms.
  • 5. The Australian National University • The Australian National University – commonly abbreviated to ANU, is a public teaching and research university located in Canberra.
  • 6. Parliament House, Canberra • Parliament House, Canberra was opened in 1988, replacing the provisional Parliament House building opened in 1927.
  • 7. Government House • Government House, Canberra, also known as "Yarralumla", is the official residence of the Governor-General.
  • 8. Everlastings on Mount Hotham, located in Victoria
  • 9. There are six different states in Australia: Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.
  • 10. New South Wales has the Blue Mountains. • They are covered with forest of blue- colored eucalyptus trees. The air above the forest contains millions of microscopic drops of eucalyptus oil. When the sun shines, the air of the Blue Mountains is a real, beautiful blue.
  • 11. National symbols of Australia
  • 12. Opal • Australia is an industrial country. They extract there coal, nickel, zinc and gold. Australia is one of the most important producers of metals and minerals.
  • 13. Wallaby • There are many animals in Australia that you cannot see anywhere else. Did you know that? Of course, you did! I personally divide Australian animals into three categories^ the good. The bad. The ugly. I think, it’s reasonable. Talking of the good animals. We should mention kangaroos in the first place.
  • 14. Emu
  • 15. Koala • Wombats and koalas have many similarities and are probably related. Both have pockets inside their mouths to store food and neither has a tail. The number of koalas is getting smaller. This is partly because of fumes from bush fires.
  • 16. Platypus • The strangest of all Australian mammals is the platypus. The platypus is a shy animal, usually feeding under water at night. It has a mouth shaped like the the flat bill of a duck which acts like a radar. It tells the animal where worms and insects can be found. The platypus swims with its eyes and ears closed!
  • 17. Kookaburra • There are about 800 kinds of birds, among them the kookaburra, the Australian bird whose call sounds like loud laughter.
  • 18. Uluru
  • 19. Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia • Australia is a constitutional monarchy like Great Britain. The British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is also queen of Australia and country’s head of state. But the queen has little power in the Australia government. She serves mainly as a symbol of a long historical tie between Great Britain and Australia.
  • 20. Sydney Opera House • The famous Sydney Opera House looks like waves when they break on the beach. It was designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utson.
  • 21. The capital of Australia • The city is the political and administrative capital of Australia. It is also the centre of the nation’s history, learning and research. Canberra is a beautiful city with lovely parks, wide streets and a big artificial lake which has been named after the city’s designer. It is the home of a beautiful Australian War Memorial, the National Library, the National University, Australian Academy of Science, as well as Parliament House, which is the centre for Australian government.
  • 23. AUSTRALIA • Did you know, for example, that Australia is the biggest island in the world? It is only a little smaller that the United States of America, and it is bigger than Western Europe. Did you know that Australia is one of the oldest lands in the world? A long line of mountains runs from the north to the south of the east coast. It is called the Great Dividing Range because it divides the green, wet coast of eastern Australia from the hot dry lands in the centre. Australia has three different climates. In the north, the weather is tropical- hot and wet. In the centre, the climate is very dry, and the land is mainly desert. In the south, it is pleasant with cool winters and warm summers. The four great deserts of central Australia cover 2 000 000 square kilometres. There are six different states in Australia: Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. There are also two territories: Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory. Each Australian State has its own government and its own capital city. The States Capitals are Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide.
  • 24. • Where do all Australians live? In fact most of them (85 per cent) live in the cities of the east coast. But even these cities are not very dig: There are only 16 million people in Australia, and it’s a very big country. Australia is a very rich country. It has gold, silver, iron, coal, and many precious metals. Oil and natural gas help to build big industries. Victoria, the south-eastern state, has a large number of industries. Oil is no problem for them. Sydney is the best known place in New South Wales. In fact, it’s the best known place in Australia. New South Wales has the Blue Mountains. They are covered with forests of blue- coloured eucalyptus trees. The air above the forest contains millions of microscopic drops of eucalyptus oil. When the sun shines, the air of the Blue Mountains is a real, beautiful blue. The Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Queensland is a garden under the sea. There are 1400 different kinds of fish, and more than 300kinds of coral. Tropical fruit and flowers grow on the beautiful islands. It is not surprising that more holiday makers come to Queensland every year. South Australia is the driest of all the states, but it has the Murray River, which brings greenness and life to the state’s south-east corner. Tasmania, the island south of Australia, is small. It is the same size as England. There are no deserts in Tasmania. It often rains, both in winter and summer. Only half a million people live in Tasmania, and a large part of the island is still covered with wild, beautiful rainforests. These forests are of wonderful flowers and interesting animals, like the little Tasmanian devil.
