Using Screenr to Create Tutorials, Podcasts and More.. “Hey, can you create a ‘getting started’ tutorial to help employees with the new Office 2007 upgrade? Can you get that ready by this afternoon?” Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, you’re not alone. We are living in a time of perpetual beta and as learning professionals, we need access to a tool that allows us to get content out to our audience fast! We need a tool that is easy to use and deliver, a breeze to access, and, most importantly, low-to-no cost. Believe it or not, there is such a product. It is called Screenr and it’s made by Articulate. Screenr is a free screencasting application that is extremely easy to use and requires no software download or storage. The only thing you need to access it is a Twitter account. With Screenr, you will be able to create that “Getting Started with Office 2007” tutorial in no time! Your boss will be impressed. - Hello,My name is Maria Darst and I work for the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Columbus, Ohio. Home of the OHIO STATE BUCKEYES!! I’m in the Human Resources Department as an OD specialist that does it all!I got my start with learning and development from teaching staff how to use the library circulation system. Just five years ago I became interested in elearning. I’ve been designing and developing online courses for the library using Articulate Studio, Captivate, and Raptivity. I am a proud owner of a $15,000 certificate called a Masters degree in Instructional Design! Anyone else?
- I’m originally from LaosFor those of you who can’t place it. Laos is at latitude 18 degrees north of the Equator, Longitude 105 degrees east. There! It’s about the size of the state of Utah.
- I love strange and bizaare food. Like this one! Anyone know what this is?? Yes, it’ a fruit called Durian! It’s sweet, creamy custardy and delicious if you can get past the smell. - We learn so much from each other! Libraries are a great place to meet people.When’s the last time you’ve been to a public library? What did you notice about your library? Is it the same as when you were younger?Welcome to the Columbus Metropolitan Library!We were 2010 Library of the year which just means that we are super awesome! Last year we circulated 16 million items, 8.2 million user visits1.2 million reference questions We are proud to be a viable resource in Central Ohio. One of my fondest childhood memory was joining the Summer Reading Club at my local library. I couldn’t wait for school to end and summer vacation to start so I can read at the library and win prizes. This year our summer reading club theme is “Be a Hero READ” Our amazing superhero Captain read. He can speed read an entire chapter book in a blink of an eye.In the summer time it’s all about the Summer Reading Club…literally all projects come to a halt…How many of you here remember storytime? When was the last time you went to a storytime?How about now?Let’s do storytime. Get your ‘sit upon and blankie’ Don’t fall asleep.
- Isn’t that fun? That storytime was created using Screenr and downloaded as an MP4. Speaking of online stories one of our top priorities this year is….
- eReaders. Remember this past christmas? How many of you gave or received an eReader? Yep, an iPad is eReader too!
- In response to this demand we purchased 7 and created an eReader Petting Zoo.Devices were configured to work with our digital downloads (our ebook subscription service from a company called Overdrive). So did our customers…so much so that we were flooded with eReader questions. Does your library content work on my Kindle? How do I transfer ePubs onto my Nook? What’s Adobe Digital Editions?? Customers were coming in with eReaders still in the box and expect us to help them unpack and turn it on…Staff became increasing frustrated at their inability to help customers. They needed training….guess what happened Next???
- How many of you have experienced this? What was your reaction? Yep! So was mine. When I heard this I began to calculate the time and resources in my head …Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, Evaluation……and guess what two weeks just absolutely won’t cut it. Ever heard of 200:1? I heard awhile back that it took 200 hours of work to create 1 hour of engaging elearning right?I’ve got a challenge for SURE!!!! How many of you here like a challenge? Who doesn’t work well in a pressure cooker? Who here doesn’t suffer from Urgency Addiction?But let’s take a moment…and breathe…let’s set the stage…so to speak….
- Before we dive in.. I want to tell you what you’re going to learn this session so that you can put this stuff back in your “organization” part of the brain…. - Why Screenr when there are more robust tools like Captivate and Camtasia?1st of all, IT’S EASY to use. You don’t need to download anything. Works on a MAC/PAC. Forces you to keep it Short.Share it on many social media sitesSign in with Twitter, Facebook, Google or even YahooDid I mention the nice price???It was a no brainer for us. Because of the tight timeline we needed to leverage all of our resources. We were given subject matter experts from various locations in our system. They were ready and willing to work. So we put them to work. This is what we did…
- With the help of several subject matter experts around the library system. We created an eReader Learning Roadmap using a Wordpress Blog. The roadmap contains about 9 activities for staff to complete to learn about eReaders.
- Activity 1 takes them through Basic Ereader Technology with links to the glossary and a Screenr demonstrating the key terms.
- Another activity shows them how to remove an eBook from a Device using Screenr.
- Learners are asked at intervals to login to our LMS and complete a quiz. This is how we track them. A screencast is also used here to explain how to login and take the quiz in the LMS.We were able to deliver this eLearning roadmap in under two weeks. Without our subject matter experts and Screenr this would have been impossible to do in the given time frame. What questions do you have about what’ve done? - Click and drag on the squares to size. Screenr allows you to adjust the size of your screencast when you embed the code But whatever size you make is how big it will be when you download the MP4.Plug in your microphone and test itClick the red record button and GO…..It will record all mouse movements, audio and video on the screen.You can pause or press ALT +D when you’re done. It will stop at 5 minutes.If you don’t like it you can hit the trash can icon and start over….
- You can hit Play to preview your screencast.Put in a description and publish it. Depending on how you’re logged into to Screenr it will publish to that site.
- For sharing Screenr provides the old html embed code or the iframe if your site supports it.You can download it as an MP4 and delete the screenr if you’re nervous about it being out there.Publish it to YoutubeFacebook and TwitterThat’s it.
