The Marin Symphony's 2011-2012 season opens with Totally Tchaikovsky on 10/2/11 and 10/4/11.
Our first program, Totally Tchaikovsky, presents four romantic Tchaikovsky classics and features one of our favorite guest artists. The brilliance of Orion Weiss started in pre-school, continued at the Julliard School of Music and has grown ever since. He’s performed with dozens of the top orchestras and toured the world with the likes of Itzhak Perlman. Orion is known for expressing surprising energy and enthusiasm every time he performs. View the Concert 1, No. 1 slideshow to get insights about the performance from Orion's point of view.

3. CONNECTIONS
“ My first connection to Marin is with Alasdair Neale. He was
one of the first conductors — the most important conductor in
the early part of my career. I’ve worked with him the longest...
At first he was just a conductor. Then he became a friend. We’re
in touch always. He’s a friend for music and a musical friend at
”
the same time. This will be the third time I’ve played in Marin.

4. FOCUS
“ I can involve both the
really focused part
of my brain preparing
for a concert and the
really experimental part
of my brain trying new
things for whatever’s
”
coming next.

5. LISTENING
“ I listen to recordings.
I play it on different
pianos. I come back with
different intentions and
ideas. When I perform
for people I listen in a
new way. I transport
myself into the ears of
”
an audience member.

6. CONVERSATION
“ I see what’s working
and what isn’t, and
I do instantaneous
changes to make it work.
When I’m playing with
other musicians I’m
reacting to what they’re
doing. Music is like a
”
conversation.

7. CHARACTERS & VOICES
“ Even in a solo concert, there’s
still a dialogue going on inside
the music. There are characters
and voices. In the Tchaikovsky
concerto there’s this endless
stream of different characters
with attitudes and personalities.
You can imagine a person.
We’re trying to tell a story.
Even if it’s not a story with
a plot, it’s still a story that
”
makes emotional sense.
