2. What Is Copyright?
Copyright is the LAW that protects an original work! This work could
come in many forms including:
• Books
•Movies
•Pictures
•Choreography
•Songs
•And MORE!
Copyright DOES NOT protect ideas, facts, or data.
Under Copyright law, only the copyright holder has the right to
do things like reproduce, post, share, and display the work.
3. Because of FAIR USE, it is okay for a person to use some parts and
pieces of copyrighted material. This can be done if the material is used
in: teaching, news reporting, parody, or critical comment. But how will
you know if you’re using copyright material fairly?!....
Purpose of borrowing Nature of the work- what type
material- how you’re gong of work it is
to use it
Amount of material used – Effect on the market – what
how much is borrowed the effects of the
borrowing are
4. When It’s NOT fair use..
If you’re going to use copyright material and you don’t think it is
considered fair use..
Some things you need permission to do:
•Post something on the internet
•Photocopy and share photographs
•Reprint an article
•Email a published work
5. Things to remember about
Copyright:
•Copyright is automatic – it is implied to any original work as soon
as it is written down or recorded, the copyright symbol does not
need to be present for copyright laws to be intact
•Physical ownership of a material and copyright ownership is NOT
THE SAME
•Even if you capture a video yourself but it is of an original work,
like a live song performance, you ARE breaking copyright laws
6. Copyright & YouTube
When using YouTube or any sight that is used to share videos,
its extremely important to keep copyright laws in mind.
When using YouTube there are many things that you might be
doing that you might not realize are breaking copyright law,
like:
•Posting your recording of a original performance of a
song or dance
•Using the music of an artist for the background music of
your video
•Covering a song
It’s important to keep copyright in mind because if laws or
rules are broken you may end up being banned from YouTube
FOR LIFE!
7. Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the illegal use of someone else’s work and trying to
make it seem like it is your own.
Plagiarism is not always intentional, but can have extremely
serious consequences.
While doing research and then reporting, it is important to keep
in mind where you got the information that you’re using. While
writing or creating something if you’re using information that
you didn’t already know and you learned somewhere it is
ESSENTIAL that you give credit to your sources.
There are many ways to do this, but the easiest way is to include
a work cited or bibliography page….
