Within the core of Mariahilferstrasse,
Vienna’s largest shopping district, cars have
been eliminated altogether.
- 3. The core zone is bookended by street sections
that have been reduced from four lanes to two in
order to accommodate wider sidewalks.
- 4. In keeping with the overall cleanliness of the
street, waste bins are strategically located
every few metres.
- 6. An abundance of benches and seating areas help make
Mariahilferstrasse more of a meeting area and not just a place to shop.
- 8. Thanks to the city’s extensive
public transit system which
continues to grow, it’s no longer
necessary to own a car.
