How a psychological thriller film promotion package conveys its themes
1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
tasks?
2. Integration of time
Time is an on-going theme in the
trailer and each time it yields negative
results, it is used to provide hints into why
the character is in a state of mental collapse
and every time it reaches “11:57” we show
the character react in negative ways such as
crying, looking shocked and dropping
milk, and becoming violent.
3. Integration of time
My film poster continued the
on-going theme of time
reinforcing the code of enigma
and mystery surrounding the
meaning of the time. Here we
see a clock which if you look
closely reads the time 11:57 and
the tag line “lost time is never
found again”. These work
together to raise the questions
why is the time “11:57”
important and what is its
significance throughout the
trailer and posters
4. Psychological theme
Throughout the trailer hints are made towards the characters mental
state, one of these is his increasingly violent behaviour, he lashes out
unexpectedly without warning and at one point even physically intimidates
his neighbour.
In all three of these scenes we see a violent behaviour and in the middle
snapshot the dialogue “where is she” Is used to show he's searching for
someone. In another scene we see him running frantically searching while
calling “Lisa”. This paints the image he has lost someone called Lisa and this is
the cause of his psychological regression.
5. psychological theme
Another important theme that I carried on
from the trailer was the psychological element
of the main characters own mind antagonising
him. We see two versions of his life, one where
he lives normally as a teacher happily in the
past evident by his content facial expression
and choice of clothes, and another where we
see him holding his head attempting to block
out the truth about Lisa, he's also a lot paler in
the second image suggesting stress or illness
while his change of clothes show the character
transition between the two lifestyles. These
two images successfully convey the theme
present of his psychological breakdown as we
see an evident transition between his state of
mind as he unsuccessfully attempts to repress
the memories of Lisa's death. This flows
together with the trailer to convey a strong
image of helplessness as both create a sense of
psychological regression.
6. Titles
The films is shown at the top of the poster “repression”
meaning to attempt to control or suppress something. This
suits the theme of the trailer as the entire plot revolves around
his attempt to live in memories and repress Lisa's death. The
cracked worn writing was chosen as it symbolises his minds
wall breaking down as the truth about Lisa is slowly realised.
The colour red is used to symbolise danger and is present in
both the trailer and film poster.
7. Titles
Subtitles also work to convey the story as they carry on
the continuous subtle hints that suggest the plot of the
film and the genre. They aid in telling the story of the
film without giving away too much.
8. Billing block
Both the trailer and the poster also featured a
billing block, meeting the codes and conventions
of typical film products I also included a
website and
release date to
complete the
conventional
criteria.
9. Magazine analysis
The film magazine finalized the
advertising side of the film
promotion package, it does however
break up the conventional colour
scheme replaced instead by a
colourful vibrant scheme to stand
out from conventional dark colour
schemes of magazines, it keeps up
the convention of the film poster
and the trailer by glorifying the main
actor, the film trailer does this by
showing him as the most viewed
while he is the sole image on the
magazine and the film poster
meaning he became a key selling
point throughout the three products
as he was depicted as a celebrity
10. conclusion
In conclusion all three products worked well
together to create the image of a film promotion
package by meeting the codes and conventions
of a typical trailer, film magazine and film poster.
It also correctly conveys its genre and raises
enough questions to intrigue the
audience, acting as a successful advertisement
package to draw viewers in.
