Activity Nine: The First Parables of Jesus
Concerning Hypocrisy, Worldly Anxiety, Watchfulness and Jesus’
Approaching Passion (Luke 12:1-59)
1. What is the “leaven of the Pharisees?” Why did Jesus warn His disciples
about it?
2. Who has Jesus promised to confess before the angels of God? Who has He
promised to deny before them?
3. How were the disciples instructed to answer when questioned by
magistrates and others in power?
Answer: Here the Pharisees and Herodians want to entrap Jesus
with the question, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or
not?” Jesus knows the malice in their hearts and responds with
a cutting question, “Why are you putting me to the test, you
hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.”
4. What prompted Jesus to warn His disciples to beware of covetousness?
Answer: Beware of covetousness - One of these brothers, no doubt, was guilty of
this sin; and our Saviour, as was his custom, took occasion to warn his disciples of
its danger.
5. In the parable of the rich fool, what demonstrates the folly of laying up
treasures on earth and not in heaven?
Answer: He rich farmer in this parable is portrayed negatively, as an example
of greed. By replacing his existing barn, he avoids using agricultural land for
storage purposes, thus maximizing his income, as well as allowing him to wait for a
price increase before selling. St. Augustine comments that the farmer was "planning
to fill his soul with excessive and unnecessary feasting and was proudly
disregarding all those empty bellies of the poor. He did not realize that the bellies of
the poor were much safer storerooms than his barns."
6. How does Jesus illustrate the principle that one should place his trust in
God for the physical necessities of life?
Answer: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on
your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make straight your paths.”

LIFE OF JESUS
7. Who is said to seek after the things of the world? Why should God’s
children not be anxious about those things?
Answer: From the King James translation of Matthew "Ask, and it
shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be
opened unto you." With this authority, he says to everyone who
believes in him, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your
life” Jesus and all the promises that are now Yes in him— is the
antidote to anxiety. What he accomplishes for us and promises to
us is the ultimate triumph over all that terrifies us. He does not
promise us escape from misery in this world. He promises that he
will redeem every misery and that in him we will overcome the
worst the world can do to us.
8. When the Lord returns, which servants will he bless? Why?
Answer: Jesus continued the parable with a contrast: “Suppose the servant
says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then
begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink
and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does
not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces
and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
Repentance Enjoined, Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13:1-9)
9. In the parable of the fig tree, what happened to the tree if it did not bear
fruit? What lesson is to be learned from this parable?
Answer: He told them to bring the fruit of their hearts to Christ
because the ax was already at the root of the tree. But the Jewish
people were offended at the idea they needed to repent. Then they
rejected the Messiah because Jesus demanded a clean heart, a clean
slate via repentance. In this story we see stubborn hearts riddled with
pride. The Jewish people felt their actions, deeds, and the states of
their hearts were righteous despite God pointing out their sins. As
followers of Christ, we have to make a decision: live for ourselves or
live on in the vine in Christ.
CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1
LIFE OF JESUS
The First Great Group of Parables (Matt. 13:1-53; Mark 4:1-34; Luke 8:4-18)
10. Briefly summarize the parable of the sower. Explain its meaning.
Answer: The parable of the sower is an 'allegory' about the Kingdom of God. In other words, it can
be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning; everything in the story represents something else. It is a
growth parable. The man represents God and the seed is His message.
11. Why did Jesus teach in parables? What prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in regard to the parables
of Jesus?
Answer: When asked by the disciples why he used parables, Jesus said that he would fulfill
the words of the prophet and reveal the mysteries from the foundation of the world. This
important message can be found in most of the parables.
12. In the parable of the mustard seed, what characteristic of the seed is emphasized? Why? What
lesson is to be learned from this parable?
Answer: It's like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is
less than all the seeds that are on the earth, yet when it is sown, grows up, and becomes
greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can lodge
under its shadow. This grain then when sown in the field, that is, when seized by the people
and delivered to death, and as it were buried in the ground by a sowing of the body, grew
up beyond the size of all herbs, and exceeded all the glory of the Prophets
13. What characteristic of leaven does Jesus use to teach a lesson? What is that lesson?
Answer: This parable is part of a pair, and shares the meaning of the preceding Parable of the
Mustard Seed, namely the powerful growth of the Kingdom of God from small beginnings. The
final outcome is inevitable once the natural process of growth has begun.
14. In the parable of the great treasure, what did the man do who found this treasure? What is the
lesson of this parable?
Answer: He hides in plain sight and when we open our eyes and seek Him, we find Him
near. In the parable, once the man found the treasure, he immediately knew the value and
was filled with joy. In the same way, when we find God by seeking Him, we recognize the
value of God's awesomeness immediately.
15. What is the lesson of the parable of the pearl of great price?
Answer; The Parable of the Pearl lesson, illustrates the great value of the Kingdom of Heaven. This
is the penultimate parable in Matthew 13, coming just before the Parable of the Dragnet.
16. What lesson is to be learned from the parable of the net?
Answer: That God, although very forgiving, will make judgments upon people when they are taken
from the earth.

Activity Ten: Further Preaching in Galilee
Jesus Stills the Storm (Matt. 8:18-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25)
1. What was Jesus’ response to the scribe who came to Him and told Him he
would follow Him wherever He went? What does that response reveal
about Jesus and His character and about the character of those whom He
would have followed Him?
Answer; When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to
cross to the other side of the sea. And one of the scribes came to
Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Jesus
replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of
Man has no place to lay His head.”
2. What caused the disciples of Jesus to be afraid while in a boat crossing the
Sea of Galilee? What was Jesus doing while in the boat? What request did
His disciples make of Him? What was His response? What was the reaction
of the disciples to this?
Answer: According to the Gospels, one evening Jesus and his disciples were
crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat. Suddenly a furious storm came up, with the
waves breaking over the boat so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was asleep on a
cushion in the stern, and the disciples woke him and asked, "Teacher, don't you care
if we drown.
Jesus Heals Two Gergesene Demoniacs
(Matt. 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-21; Luke 8:26-40)
3. Who met Jesus when He came into the country of the Gergesenes (aka
Gadarenes)? Briefly summarize his condition. What did Jesus do for Him?
Answer: Immediately there met him out of the tombs a certain man out of the city
[Gergesa], (b) with an unclean spirit, who had demons who had his dwelling in the
tombs and abode not in any house, but in the tombs. It is likely that Jesus asked the
sufferer his name wishing to assure him of sympathy, but the demons in him had
the floor and continued to do the talking. A legion was a division of the Roman
army containing from four to six thousand men. If Jesus asked the demon its name,
he did so that he might disclose this fact to his disciples.
4. What request did the Gergesenes make of Jesus? Why?
Answer:
Matthew’s Feast. Discourse on Fasting
(Matt. 9:10-17; Mark 2:15-22; Luke 5:29-39)
5. How did Jesus reply to the Pharisees who asked Him why He ate with
publicans and sinners?

  • 1. CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1 LIFE OF JESUS Name: Date: Section: Ms. Eugenia Abe Evora Activity Nine: The First Parables of Jesus Concerning Hypocrisy, Worldly Anxiety, Watchfulness and Jesus’ Approaching Passion (Luke 12:1-59) 1. What is the “leaven of the Pharisees?” Why did Jesus warn His disciples about it? 2. Who has Jesus promised to confess before the angels of God? Who has He promised to deny before them? 3. How were the disciples instructed to answer when questioned by magistrates and others in power? Answer: Here the Pharisees and Herodians want to entrap Jesus with the question, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” Jesus knows the malice in their hearts and responds with a cutting question, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” 4. What prompted Jesus to warn His disciples to beware of covetousness? Answer: Beware of covetousness - One of these brothers, no doubt, was guilty of this sin; and our Saviour, as was his custom, took occasion to warn his disciples of its danger. 5. In the parable of the rich fool, what demonstrates the folly of laying up treasures on earth and not in heaven? Answer: He rich farmer in this parable is portrayed negatively, as an example of greed. By replacing his existing barn, he avoids using agricultural land for storage purposes, thus maximizing his income, as well as allowing him to wait for a price increase before selling. St. Augustine comments that the farmer was "planning to fill his soul with excessive and unnecessary feasting and was proudly disregarding all those empty bellies of the poor. He did not realize that the bellies of the poor were much safer storerooms than his barns." 6. How does Jesus illustrate the principle that one should place his trust in God for the physical necessities of life? Answer: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Lesson  TeXts Fourfold Gospel pp. 316-341 Matthew 13:1-53 Mark 4:1-34 Luke 8:4-18 12:1 - 13:9 John
  • 2. CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1 LIFE OF JESUS 7. Who is said to seek after the things of the world? Why should God’s children not be anxious about those things? Answer: From the King James translation of Matthew "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." With this authority, he says to everyone who believes in him, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life” Jesus and all the promises that are now Yes in him— is the antidote to anxiety. What he accomplishes for us and promises to us is the ultimate triumph over all that terrifies us. He does not promise us escape from misery in this world. He promises that he will redeem every misery and that in him we will overcome the worst the world can do to us. 8. When the Lord returns, which servants will he bless? Why? Answer: Jesus continued the parable with a contrast: “Suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. Repentance Enjoined, Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13:1-9) 9. In the parable of the fig tree, what happened to the tree if it did not bear fruit? What lesson is to be learned from this parable? Answer: He told them to bring the fruit of their hearts to Christ because the ax was already at the root of the tree. But the Jewish people were offended at the idea they needed to repent. Then they rejected the Messiah because Jesus demanded a clean heart, a clean slate via repentance. In this story we see stubborn hearts riddled with pride. The Jewish people felt their actions, deeds, and the states of their hearts were righteous despite God pointing out their sins. As followers of Christ, we have to make a decision: live for ourselves or live on in the vine in Christ.
  • 3. CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1 LIFE OF JESUS The First Great Group of Parables (Matt. 13:1-53; Mark 4:1-34; Luke 8:4-18) 10. Briefly summarize the parable of the sower. Explain its meaning. Answer: The parable of the sower is an 'allegory' about the Kingdom of God. In other words, it can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning; everything in the story represents something else. It is a growth parable. The man represents God and the seed is His message. 11. Why did Jesus teach in parables? What prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in regard to the parables of Jesus? Answer: When asked by the disciples why he used parables, Jesus said that he would fulfill the words of the prophet and reveal the mysteries from the foundation of the world. This important message can be found in most of the parables. 12. In the parable of the mustard seed, what characteristic of the seed is emphasized? Why? What lesson is to be learned from this parable? Answer: It's like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is less than all the seeds that are on the earth, yet when it is sown, grows up, and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of the sky can lodge under its shadow. This grain then when sown in the field, that is, when seized by the people and delivered to death, and as it were buried in the ground by a sowing of the body, grew up beyond the size of all herbs, and exceeded all the glory of the Prophets 13. What characteristic of leaven does Jesus use to teach a lesson? What is that lesson? Answer: This parable is part of a pair, and shares the meaning of the preceding Parable of the Mustard Seed, namely the powerful growth of the Kingdom of God from small beginnings. The final outcome is inevitable once the natural process of growth has begun. 14. In the parable of the great treasure, what did the man do who found this treasure? What is the lesson of this parable? Answer: He hides in plain sight and when we open our eyes and seek Him, we find Him near. In the parable, once the man found the treasure, he immediately knew the value and was filled with joy. In the same way, when we find God by seeking Him, we recognize the value of God's awesomeness immediately. 15. What is the lesson of the parable of the pearl of great price? Answer; The Parable of the Pearl lesson, illustrates the great value of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the penultimate parable in Matthew 13, coming just before the Parable of the Dragnet. 16. What lesson is to be learned from the parable of the net? Answer: That God, although very forgiving, will make judgments upon people when they are taken from the earth.
  • 4. CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1 LIFE OF JESUS Activity Ten: Further Preaching in Galilee Jesus Stills the Storm (Matt. 8:18-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25) 1. What was Jesus’ response to the scribe who came to Him and told Him he would follow Him wherever He went? What does that response reveal about Jesus and His character and about the character of those whom He would have followed Him? Answer; When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea. And one of the scribes came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” 2. What caused the disciples of Jesus to be afraid while in a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee? What was Jesus doing while in the boat? What request did His disciples make of Him? What was His response? What was the reaction of the disciples to this? Answer: According to the Gospels, one evening Jesus and his disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat. Suddenly a furious storm came up, with the waves breaking over the boat so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern, and the disciples woke him and asked, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown. What did Jesus do for Him? Answer: Immediately there met him out of the tombs a certain man out of the city [Gergesa], (b) with an unclean spirit, who had demons who had his dwelling in the tombs and abode not in any house, but in the tombs. It is likely that Jesus asked the sufferer his name wishing to assure him of sympathy, but the demons in him had the floor and continued to do the talking. A legion was a division of the Roman army containing from four to six thousand men. If Jesus asked the demon its name, he did so that he might disclose this fact to his disciples. 4. Why were the people at the house of Jairus doing when Jesus arrived? How did Jesus respond? 11. When Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead, why do you think He only allowed three of His disciples and the parents of the girl in the room where He performed the miracle?
