As hunter-gatherers lived in nomadic bands, tasks were divided based on ability rather than gender, with women regularly gathering 80% of the group's food through collecting plants while men occasionally hunted and provided 20%. This division of labor afforded women high status within these early societies. Additionally, artifacts like the Venus of Willendorf provide early depictions of women and suggest they had relative equality and freedom from discrimination compared to later periods in history.
