Proposal.
In this unit of coursework, I am going to produce a magazine that will be targeted to an audience and will be sold in shops across the country.
The type of magazine I will be producing is a film magazine with horror as the genre. I have chosen to do horror as the genre of my magazine
because I have so many creative and unique ideas that I could use for my magazine.
The target audience for my magazine is targeted to teenagers and young adults who have an interest in horror films. The gender would be
targeted to both genders because the main actress in the film which is the main feature of the magazine, is a well-known celebrity which
most teenage girls look up to and who is every boys teenage dream. The age range I have chosen for the target audience of my magazine is
15-27. I have chosen this age as my target audience because they are the highest percentage of people who are suitable to watch this film
and as the magazine is more mature and has use of more formal words, I don’t think that a younger generation of target audience would be
as interested. Also because it gives a larger age range which means a more variety of target audience. The social class I have chosen for this
magazine is aimed to social classes C1-D because a majority of my target audience is still in school, colleges etc. which means they don’t have
a job yet. Although they would be able to afford my magazine because it comes out monthly and they could earn money doing chores,
Saturday jobs etc.
I have used useful resources such as other film magazines like empire and total film to help me with the types of information to use for my
magazine like the colour schemes, the sell lines and the taglines. This will help capture the target audiences’ attention and to buy the
magazine.
The features of my magazine will include the main image that will be of the movie that the magazine will be based on. The main image will
be of a little girl standing in front of a mirror and sees herself covered in blood with a shocked and confused facial expression. Standing
behind the mirror, you will see a clown popping its head on the side. The masthead will be on top of the magazine which will be the name of
the magazine. The name I have chosen for my magazine is SCREEN. The main image will be surrounded by sell lines which will say what will
be inside of the magazine and competitions to attract a wider variety of target audience. My magazine will be sold monthly which will be
great for collectors and so that every month could sell a magazine which could be based on new releases of films. The price of my magazine
will not be too expensive and not too cheap either so that it could be affordable. It will also include a contents page to indicate readers to
the pages they would like to get to and can just skip through the unwanted pages. The contents page will include pictures of each page so the
reader can have an idea of how it would look like. It will also include different types of genres, for example movie and celeb gossip from
movies like romance and comedy. This would appeal to a wider variety of target audience. My magazine will also feature a double page
spread which will include an interview with the stars of the film ‘hall of mirrors’. The interview will include their experiences before they
were famous, how it was like on set of the movie and advice for their fans.
My magazine will be published by a company called ‘Film Fanatics media’. I have chosen ‘film fanatics media’ to publish my magazine because
the company is one of the best publishing companies in the UK. It is a successful magazine company therefore the target audience will
instantly know that the magazine will be good because it has so successful.
Key concepts research.Codes and conventions.
Codes and conventions are the ingredients that make up a magazine and what you expect to see inside it. Codes and conventions can be split up into 3 groups:
Technical which include camera techniques and camera shots etc. , symbolize which include clothing, colours, hair, make up etc. basically the appearance of
celebrities who are in the magazine. The last group is written, which is based on what is written inside the magazine. All of these things make up a magazine.
Magazines are normally published every month or every week. The editor has to make sure that it would be affordable to the target audience in which the magazine
Is aimed at. A magazine is always targeted towards one particular group or a specific target audience. A magazine always has to include a front cover, this is important
as it entices people to buy the magazine as the front cover is what people will see in shops. It should stand out and include a main image which has to do with the
main feature. This will make people who are interested in this particular feature want to buy it. Sell lines should also be included in every front cover of a magazine so
that the consumers will be able to know what is included inside. To have a wider variety of target audience, the sell lines should feature other genres and not focused
on just one. The front cover should include freebees such as posters to make the consumer feel as though they are getting more out of their money.
Also, competitions to persuade people to buy the magazines as they may want to enter and win it. In every magazine, there is a contents page so that the consumer
will be able to locate the articles they are interested in and skip out the unwanted content. In every contents page, there are pictures that show the reader how the
articles look like. This will help them decide whether it is worth their time reading it by the amount of writing they see. The contents page will have features that
include interviews, reviews, new movies released on DVD/Blue rays. In every magazine you would expect to find interviews from famous celebrities about their
upcoming movies and reviews of the latest movies to help persuade people to go see the movie. The interviews are normally written on a double page spread in
columns which you would expect to find in a magazine. The double page spread should include pictures of the person or movie being featured and sometimes pull out
quotes. This is another way of advertising their movie. Magazines have advertisements included inside. The advertisements should be relevant to the genre of the
magazine. In film magazines you would find new releases of films in cinemas advertised. Every magazine should include a barcode. This is a less important feature to
find in a magazine but is expected to be in every single one as it is used to help the consumer buy the magazine. It is normally placed on the bottom of the front cover
instead of the back as it would be easier to purchase. There are many features that make up a magazine. I have researched the codes and conventions to similar
magazines such as empire and total film.
The uses and gratifications theory tells us the reason as to why people read and buy magazines. It explains how we use the media and what pleasures and gratifications we get
from it. It is stated that there are 4 reasons why media is important to everyone and why people read magazines. People choose to read magazines because the main feature of
the magazine may come as an interest towards them.
• One of the 4 reasons is information. A reason as to why people read magazines is to get information about the latest releases of movies, reviews about them and when
DVD’s and blue rays come out. The media such as magazines provide us with information which readers of the magazines can learn from.
• Entertainment is another reason why people read magazines. People read magazines to entertain themselves and can be used to escape the pressures of everyday life.
Media can take up a lot of time in a persons life.
• Personal identity means that reading magazines can help us identify who we are as a person and can read something that we can relate to. Reading a film magazine can
influence which genres of magazines that we are into and can change the way people look into celebrities by reading interviews.
• Personal relationship is the last reason why media such as reading a magazine is important to everyone. Personal relationship is important to everyone because it states
that the media or reading a magazine can help form relationships or social activity. Reading a film magazine can help us form relationships or social activity by knowing the
latest gossip about what new movies are coming out. This can give an idea for people to know what good movies to go watch in the cinema with friends.
Grades is the word used in the magazine industry to describe the audience who read magazines in a more formal way. The grades are separated into 2 groups: ABC1 and C2DE.
ABC1 consists of people from the social classes, upper middle class, middle class and lower middle class. Whereas for C2DE consists of people from the skilled working class,
working class and underclass. The magazine industry targets their magazines specifically towards a specific social grade or class.
• 71.8% of men read a magazine regularly
• 82% of women read a magazine regularly
• 77.4% of adults read a magazine regularly
Key concepts research.
Institution.
There are 4 main publishing companies in the UK. They are: IPC media, Emap, Conde Nast and National magazines. The cover price of a magazine and advertising are the
two main sources to generate money for the magazine to be produced. For a magazine allowing advertisers to use unused space throughout the magazine, it will increase
the magazines income. Normally in magazines you will see a full-page cover ad. This could run up to thousands of pounds especially in more popular magazines. Not only
does the magazine make money with this form of advertising, but it could also fill up pages by adding ads in spaces on the pages around the story line. This makes
advertising a larger source of revenue than the cover price of the magazine. In the UK, the two regulators of magazines are the press complaints commission (PCC) and
the advertising standards authority (ASA). If a consumer has a query or a complaint about a certain magazine then either the PCC or the ASA will deal with it.
IPC media works with over 60 media brands. They own a
mass market women’s division which includes famous
women’s magazines in the UK, including Now and Chat. They
also own men’s eportfolio which has a variety of leisure
brands including country life and Rugby world. Fashion
magazines including Marie Claire and Instyle are also owned
by IPC media. The IPC media is the UK’s leading consumer
magazine publisher, they have engaged with 26 million adults
in the UK. Almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK
men.
Conde Nast is home to some of the world’s well-known
media brands. In the United States, Conde Nast publishes 18
consumer magazines. The company also owns Fairchild
Fashion Media (FFM) which its ranges of brands serves as the
leading source of new and analysis for the global fashion
community. Conde Nast has won more national magazine
awards over the past ten years than all of its competitors
combined. It includes magazines such as Vogue and Vanity
fair.
Bauer consumer media is Europe’s largest
privately owned publishing group. The group is a
worldwide media empire offering over 300
magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV
and radio stations. Bauer consumer media is built
on influential media brands with millions of
personal relationships with engaged readers and
listeners. Bauer media reaches over nineteen
million UK adults. They own more than 80
influential media brands spanning a wide range
of interesting including Empire and TV quick.
The mode of address is what we assume about the audience. The subject of my magazine will be presented in a varied way according to the target audience. The genre of
my magazine is horror so it will include lots of dark colours such as black and red which has connotations of death and danger to match the genre of the magazine. ‘The
hall of mirrors’ is a movie that will be the main feature of my magazine. One of the main characters in the movie will be on the front cover of the magazine. The main
character of the movie will be the clown which dresses up in clothes to match her identity and blood all over her face. There will be sell lines surrounding the full bleed of
the magazine which tells the reader what types of features are included inside. It will also promote other new releases of movies to capture the attention of a wider
range of target audience. My colour scheme will be black, red, green and purple as they all have connotations of death and danger. The font of the masthead of the front
cover will be big and bold so that it stands out and will be written in either red or green to match the genre of the main feature of the magazine. There will also be a
contents page which will include pictures to show the consumer how the feature looks like so they have an idea. The contents page will help indicate the consumer to the
pages of their choice/interest. It will also include big clear numbers beside the images so that the consumers know what page their selected feature is in quickly. My
magazine will also include a double page spread which will include an interview with the main actresses of the movie. The double page spread will stick to the colour
scheme of green, black, red and purple. Also it will include pop out quotes and pictures from the movie.
Representation.
Front cover analysis.
The MASTHEAD for this magazine is ‘EMPIRE’. Empire is the
name of the magazine and is a well-known film-magazine.
This will attract collectors/consumers of the magazine to buy
this issue. The word empire shares the meaning of domain or
kingdom. The masthead is the main title of the magazine.
Here they have used a big, bold, simple font and is in capital
letters to make it eye catching. It has been outlined with a
light green glow to make it stand out even more from the
background. The black connotates darkness and evil which
matches the genre of the film. Green is a gruesome colour &
is used for the masthead to match the colour scheme of the
joker who is the main image of the issue. The masthead is
located on the top of the magazine which will not interfere
the full-bleed.
The MAIN SELL LINE for this magazine is ‘THE DARK NIGHT’
which is the name of the film. This is a way of advertising the
movie and telling the target audience that the main feature
of this magazine is focused on the new released movie. The
lettering is spaced out to make it stand out more. The font is
similar to the masthead; black, bold but simple, although
they haven’t added the green outline so that the colour isn’t
over used. It is also written in capital letters so it’s eye
catching. It has used black again to stand out from the light
background. The main sell line is placed underneath the
masthead because it is an important part of the magazine.
SELL LINES are used to tell the target audience what else is
featured inside of the magazine. The sell lines which surround
the main image, includes other features from different
movies. This can appeal to a wider variety of target audience.
The font used for the sell lines are more simple because they
are less important but they still match the colour scheme of
the front cover and is written in capital to make it stand out a
bit more. Most of the sell lines are about advertising new
releases of movies, information about the latest gossip and
interviews with celebrities. The sell lines from other movies
chosen have a similar genre to the main featured film.
The BARCODE in the magazine is placed on
the front cover instead of the back so that
it will be easier to scan. It is placed in the
bottom corner of the magazine because it
is not as important. A barcode is included
in a every magazine to allow the reader to
purchase the magazine.
Every magazine includes a MAIN IMAGE (full-bleed). The
main image takes up the whole cover spread because it is
very important. It Is important because this is what draws the
initial interest of the target audience. The main image of this
issue is of Heath Ledger which plays the role of the joker in
the movie ‘The dark knight’. Everything else apart from his
face is dark which has connotations of darkness and fear. This
means that his face is the main focus of the main image. His
facial expressions is very intriguing and scary looking. He is
also looking straight into the camera and is taken as a close-
up shot. This makes the target audience enticed to buy the
issue. His make-up makes it very easy to identify his
character. The red lips and dark circles around his eyes tells
the target audience that his role is a joker. The red around his
lips looks like blood which has connotations of
murder, violence and danger. The hint of purple on the
corner indicates what he is wearing. Purple is associated to
royalty which could represent the feeling of dominance.
The COLOUR SCHEME is green and black. This indicates that
the magazine has been made to appeal to a male audience
as they are masculine colours. The colour black has
connotations of darkness, evil and danger. This has a
resemblance to the type of genre of the film. Green is a
primary colour & has connotations of nature and is a sickly
colour, suggesting mental illness. This has a resemblance to
the joker as the jokers hair is green and that is what makes
him so recognizable.
The DATE, ISSUE NUMBER AND PRICE is placed on top of the
masthead and is written in a small font as it is not as
important as the masthead or the sell lines. The date tells the
target audience when it is released. Empire comes out
monthly and the price of it costs £3.90. This is a fair amount
to pay because as it is sold monthly, people are willing to pay
that much every month to read the things they are interested
in. The issue number is great for consumers who collect the
magazine.
The ELLIPSIS written underneath the main
sell line creates more suspense which
would make the target audience want to
read more about it and will encourage
them to buy the magazine. It is written in
green and has the same font as the sell
lines as it balances out the colour scheme
of black and green from the main sell line.
The SELL LINE ‘2 covers to collect’ is written
at the top of the issue so that it stands out.
This emphasizes the target audience that
there are 2 issues to collect which will
persuade them to buy the other one.
Contents page analysis.
The article preview shows the target audience a
preview of how page looks like and can help
them decide whether to read that page or skip it
depending on the amount of writing. The article
previews on this contents page are overlapping
each other to give it a more edgy look and not
make it look too boring.
The cover feature is the main feature of the
magazine which is most likely the reason why the
consumer has decided to buy the it. The cover
feature is the biggest picture you will see on the
contents page as it is the most important feature in
the magazine. It has got a clear heading of ‘25 years
of terminator’ and has got numerous images of the
pages to show the target audience how it looks like.
The colour of the box is red which has connotations
of danger, blood and death. This stands out from
the rest of the features in the contents page.
The text and colour scheme are very masculine to
indicate that the magazine is targeted towards
males. The text is written in black, simple writing as
it is not as important as the subheadings written on
top of it which is written in blue. This makes the text
stand out from the plain, white background. The
colour scheme is blue and white which both have
connotations of peace and heaven. This makes the
cover feature much more eye catching as the red
stands out from the calm colours of blue and white.
The subheadings are used to highlight the key
features in the magazine. The subheadings are:
features, regulars, in cinemas and at home. The
font of the subheadings are in a bigger sized font
compared to all the other fonts as it should stand
out more so that the reader would know which
section they would like to go to.
The features indicates the reader straight to the
article which captures their interest or attraction.
The information next to the features tell the reader
a brief description of the article to help them decide
whether they would like to read it or not. It is
written in a much smaller font as it is less important
and not a lot of people would read it. The page
numbers are written in bold writing beside it to
indicate the reader to the page they want to read.
The regulars are the articles that are including in
every empire magazine. This is helpful for those
who read the magazine often because it helps them
to be indicated to the page quickly of their
preferred choice.
The issue number is located on the top right of the
screen. This is great for people who collectors of the
magazine.
In cinemas section includes the new releases of
movies coming out in the cinema. This gives the
reader the chance to know what’s on so they can go
see it with friends. This is great for mainstreamers
who like to keep up with the latest gossip and want
to fit in.
At home section includes the new releases on
DVD/Blu-ray, games, TV etc. This is also great for
consumers who like to fit in with the crowd and
catch up with the latest gossip. This gives the
magazine a wider range of target audience as there
is more variety of articles which more people could
be interested in.
Double page spread analysis.
The title of this double page spread ‘the ten faces
of the joker’ looks like letters cut out from other
magazines. This relates to the actual film where
he uses this technique to sign his letters. It is
written in green which is a sickly
colour, suggesting mental illness.
The spray paint across both of the pages
represents ‘rebellion’. It is in a pink/purple
colour which is associated to royalty which
could represent the feeling of dominance and is
the colour scheme of the Jokers resemblance.
The main images of this double page
spread are of the joker from the movie
which Is played by Heath Ledger. Here
they do not focus on Heath Ledger as
an actor but as his character, the joker
to tell the target audience more about
the film and it’s characters. Most of the
images contain pictures from parts of
comic books. This would attract more
comic book readers. Most of the
pictures take up the double page
spread as people would be more
interested in looking at the pictures
instead of reading the text.
The colour scheme includes a mixture of
purples and greens which are both primary
colors. The green is a gruesome colour which
also has connotations of nature. Purple is a
rich and cheeky colour which could resemble
to the jokers personality.
The use of handwriting used in the
pull out quote ‘a visual history of
the greatest comic book villains’ is
also used in one of the teaser film
posters ‘why so serious?’. This
could lead the target audience to
the disturbed character of the
Joker.
The text used in the double page spread
is written in columns. It is written in
black font to make it stand out from the
white background in the size from
around 10-12. It’s written in a simple
font to make it easier to read. Some of
the writing is written in boxes and is
segregated from the other writing
because it could be something different
or more important. It is written inside
boxes to make it stand out more and to
make it more interesting for the target
audience to read.

EXCLUSIVE! INTERVIEW WITH EMILY PINKHAM AND VANESSA WANNER!
The mega gorge, mega talented stars of the new release blockbuster horror ‘the hall of mirrors’ chats exclusively to SCREEN! They first appeared in
our screens for the academy award winning movie, funhouse. After 3 years, Vanessa Wanner and Emily Pinkham are back and they are ready to hit
your screens and wow you again with the thrilling new horror, hall of mirrors. It’s been a year since Vanessa Wanner and Emily Pinkham last spoke
to SCREEN, and so much has been written and said about them in the meantime, we’re not really sure what to expect. They have both been very
sweet in the past – chatting away with us and generally being normal as a celeb gets. But now that they are global award winning actresses will they
still be the same, or have they changed? Within 10 seconds of walking into their hotel room, it’s clear that Vanessa and Emily are still as lovely as
ever. Forget the LA superstar life they might lead, we’re talking to two down to earth girls from down town Chicago who still knows how to have a
laugh. Fast forward 5 minutes and we’re having the best girlie chat ever. And the most amazing bit? Their managers called us afterwards to say how
much they loved talking to SCREEN!
Well, I would like to start off by congratulating you girls for your success in the past year. Last time you came on set, you girls were new comers to
the movie industry. How does it feel to be global award winning actresses now?
Emily – aw thank you so much! It’s crazy. It’s crazy how much could change in a year. It’s been such a roller coaster ride but I’m so blessed and
thankful for everything that has happened in the past year. I’ve been able to work with so many amazing people and it has been such an amazing
experience.
That’s good to hear! So let’s talk about your new movie ‘The hall of mirrors’. Why would you recommend people to go and see it?
Vanessa – Well…I would definitely recommend people to go watch this movie if they are into the horror type of film, obviously (Laughs) but yeah, it’s
just simply amazing. Go see it! You won’t regret it!
I’ve heard there has been some off screen romance between you and Zac Efron, Emily. Is this true?
Emily – (Laughs) We’re just friends…I’m definitely too busy to be in a relationship right now. I think I need to be with someone who is very secure in
themselves and could understand my schedule. So I’m going to be single for a while. No boys. (Laughs)
You told your fans on twitter recently that you’ve been hurt a lot.
Emily – Yeah that’s my problem. It’s always by the same person over and over again. I go through the same issues as every other teen girl – and
that’s love and being hurt a million times.
But at least you’ve got Vanessa to look after you. How was it like working with her?
Emily – Aw I love Vanessa! She’s is like an older sister to me! She’s always there for me whenever I’m down and she puts a smile on my face. I’m so
blessed to have her in my life and I’m so happy that we get to share this crazy experience together.
That’s so sweet! Vanessa, have you got any advice for your fans for reaching for their dream?
Vanessa - All I want to say is – the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Every great dream begins with a dreamer.
Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
Very inspirational words there Vanessa! Thank you girls, all of the team from SCREEN wish you both the best for the future. As to all the readers, go
check out Hall of mirrors coming out October 31st in cinemas.

- I decided to name my magazine Screen because it’s an appropriate word to use for a magazine towards movies as
the word ‘screen’ is associated to film and movie.
- For the masthead design, I decided to use a similar design as the full bleed and main sell line overflows the page
with too much detail. Although I wanted to use fonts with a Halloween theme as my magazine is a Halloween
edition.
Target audience
My target audience will be aimed towards both male and females aged 15-27. I have chosen the age range 15-27 because a high
percentage of people around these ages would still be in school either doing their GCSE’s, A-level examinations or would be in
college or university. Buying/reading my magazine can be an escape from the pressures of everyday life and take a break from all
the stress of exams, homework etc.
My target audience is aimed towards teenagers and young adults who are interested in the latest releases of blockbuster movies
and who likes to read about celebrities. I want to balance out the segments of film promotion and celebrity interviews in the
magazine so that it can be equally suitable for both genders to read. The contents page would be a big aspect in the magazine as
the magazine will have sections which some people might want to skip. The contents page will be there if there is something in
the magazine that the person would preferably not want to read. This will vary out the amount of content suitable for both
genders equally. This gives the magazine a wider variety of target audience.
I have chosen both males and females as the genders chosen for this magazine to aimed towards because the main feature of the
issue. The main feature of this issue is about the new release of ‘Hall of mirrors’. This movie will be suitable for both genders as
the main character of the movie is a well-known actress which teenage girls look up to and inspire to look like her and where she
is every teenage boys dream. She will be on the main cover of the magazine and she will be featured inside the magazine along
side another well-known movie star. They are global award winning actresses which means people would instantly know that it
would be a good film. This would make the target audience want to buy the magazine as they would like to read more about the
film which is the main feature of the magazine.
My magazine is aimed towards all of the social classes but it is specifically aimed towards people in classes C1-D because most of
the people in my age range which is 15-27 year olds are still in school, colleges, university or only just started working. They
wouldn’t be earning a lot of money but would be able to afford to buy my magazine once every month as it comes out monthly.
Also, my magazine will include some formal writing but not to a great extent; only up to an extent where people specifically in the
age range from 15-27 year olds would be able to understand it and would be interesting for them to read it at the same time.
The magazine will be aimed towards mainstreamers/conformists as they take up most of the consumers. These are the people
who want to fit in with the crowd. My magazine would influence my target audiences personal relationship. Buying my magazine
would keep them up to date with the latest information about celebrities and new releases of films which everyone else would
like to go and see.

Media planning slides

  • 1. Proposal. In this unit of coursework, I am going to produce a magazine that will be targeted to an audience and will be sold in shops across the country. The type of magazine I will be producing is a film magazine with horror as the genre. I have chosen to do horror as the genre of my magazine because I have so many creative and unique ideas that I could use for my magazine. The target audience for my magazine is targeted to teenagers and young adults who have an interest in horror films. The gender would be targeted to both genders because the main actress in the film which is the main feature of the magazine, is a well-known celebrity which most teenage girls look up to and who is every boys teenage dream. The age range I have chosen for the target audience of my magazine is 15-27. I have chosen this age as my target audience because they are the highest percentage of people who are suitable to watch this film and as the magazine is more mature and has use of more formal words, I don’t think that a younger generation of target audience would be as interested. Also because it gives a larger age range which means a more variety of target audience. The social class I have chosen for this magazine is aimed to social classes C1-D because a majority of my target audience is still in school, colleges etc. which means they don’t have a job yet. Although they would be able to afford my magazine because it comes out monthly and they could earn money doing chores, Saturday jobs etc. I have used useful resources such as other film magazines like empire and total film to help me with the types of information to use for my magazine like the colour schemes, the sell lines and the taglines. This will help capture the target audiences’ attention and to buy the magazine. The features of my magazine will include the main image that will be of the movie that the magazine will be based on. The main image will be of a little girl standing in front of a mirror and sees herself covered in blood with a shocked and confused facial expression. Standing behind the mirror, you will see a clown popping its head on the side. The masthead will be on top of the magazine which will be the name of the magazine. The name I have chosen for my magazine is SCREEN. The main image will be surrounded by sell lines which will say what will be inside of the magazine and competitions to attract a wider variety of target audience. My magazine will be sold monthly which will be great for collectors and so that every month could sell a magazine which could be based on new releases of films. The price of my magazine will not be too expensive and not too cheap either so that it could be affordable. It will also include a contents page to indicate readers to the pages they would like to get to and can just skip through the unwanted pages. The contents page will include pictures of each page so the reader can have an idea of how it would look like. It will also include different types of genres, for example movie and celeb gossip from movies like romance and comedy. This would appeal to a wider variety of target audience. My magazine will also feature a double page spread which will include an interview with the stars of the film ‘hall of mirrors’. The interview will include their experiences before they were famous, how it was like on set of the movie and advice for their fans. My magazine will be published by a company called ‘Film Fanatics media’. I have chosen ‘film fanatics media’ to publish my magazine because the company is one of the best publishing companies in the UK. It is a successful magazine company therefore the target audience will instantly know that the magazine will be good because it has so successful.
  • 2. Key concepts research.Codes and conventions. Codes and conventions are the ingredients that make up a magazine and what you expect to see inside it. Codes and conventions can be split up into 3 groups: Technical which include camera techniques and camera shots etc. , symbolize which include clothing, colours, hair, make up etc. basically the appearance of celebrities who are in the magazine. The last group is written, which is based on what is written inside the magazine. All of these things make up a magazine. Magazines are normally published every month or every week. The editor has to make sure that it would be affordable to the target audience in which the magazine Is aimed at. A magazine is always targeted towards one particular group or a specific target audience. A magazine always has to include a front cover, this is important as it entices people to buy the magazine as the front cover is what people will see in shops. It should stand out and include a main image which has to do with the main feature. This will make people who are interested in this particular feature want to buy it. Sell lines should also be included in every front cover of a magazine so that the consumers will be able to know what is included inside. To have a wider variety of target audience, the sell lines should feature other genres and not focused on just one. The front cover should include freebees such as posters to make the consumer feel as though they are getting more out of their money. Also, competitions to persuade people to buy the magazines as they may want to enter and win it. In every magazine, there is a contents page so that the consumer will be able to locate the articles they are interested in and skip out the unwanted content. In every contents page, there are pictures that show the reader how the articles look like. This will help them decide whether it is worth their time reading it by the amount of writing they see. The contents page will have features that include interviews, reviews, new movies released on DVD/Blue rays. In every magazine you would expect to find interviews from famous celebrities about their upcoming movies and reviews of the latest movies to help persuade people to go see the movie. The interviews are normally written on a double page spread in columns which you would expect to find in a magazine. The double page spread should include pictures of the person or movie being featured and sometimes pull out quotes. This is another way of advertising their movie. Magazines have advertisements included inside. The advertisements should be relevant to the genre of the magazine. In film magazines you would find new releases of films in cinemas advertised. Every magazine should include a barcode. This is a less important feature to find in a magazine but is expected to be in every single one as it is used to help the consumer buy the magazine. It is normally placed on the bottom of the front cover instead of the back as it would be easier to purchase. There are many features that make up a magazine. I have researched the codes and conventions to similar magazines such as empire and total film. The uses and gratifications theory tells us the reason as to why people read and buy magazines. It explains how we use the media and what pleasures and gratifications we get from it. It is stated that there are 4 reasons why media is important to everyone and why people read magazines. People choose to read magazines because the main feature of the magazine may come as an interest towards them. • One of the 4 reasons is information. A reason as to why people read magazines is to get information about the latest releases of movies, reviews about them and when DVD’s and blue rays come out. Reading a film magazine can influence which genres of magazines that we are into and can change the way people look into celebrities by reading interviews. • Personal relationship is the last reason why media such as reading a magazine is important to everyone. Personal relationship is important to everyone because it states that the media or reading a magazine can help form relationships or social activity. Reading a film magazine can help us form relationships or social activity by knowing the latest gossip about what new movies are coming out. Whereas for C2DE consists of people from the skilled working class, working class and underclass. The magazine industry targets their magazines specifically towards a specific social grade or class. • 71.8% of men read a magazine regularly • 82% of women read a magazine regularly • 77.4% of adults read a magazine regularly
  • 3. Key concepts research. Institution. There are 4 main publishing companies in the UK. They are: IPC media, Emap, Conde Nast and National magazines. The cover price of a magazine and advertising are the two main sources to generate money for the magazine to be produced. For a magazine allowing advertisers to use unused space throughout the magazine, it will increase the magazines income. Normally in magazines you will see a full-page cover ad. This could run up to thousands of pounds especially in more popular magazines. Not only does the magazine make money with this form of advertising, but it could also fill up pages by adding ads in spaces on the pages around the story line. This makes advertising a larger source of revenue than the cover price of the magazine. In the UK, the two regulators of magazines are the press complaints commission (PCC) and the advertising standards authority (ASA). If a consumer has a query or a complaint about a certain magazine then either the PCC or the ASA will deal with it. IPC media works with over 60 media brands. They own a mass market women’s division which includes famous women’s magazines in the UK, including Now and Chat. They also own men’s eportfolio which has a variety of leisure brands including country life and Rugby world. Fashion magazines including Marie Claire and Instyle are also owned by IPC media. The IPC media is the UK’s leading consumer magazine publisher, they have engaged with 26 million adults in the UK. Almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men. Conde Nast is home to some of the world’s well-known media brands. In the United States, Conde Nast publishes 18 consumer magazines. The company also owns Fairchild Fashion Media (FFM) which its ranges of brands serves as the leading source of new and analysis for the global fashion community. Conde Nast has won more national magazine awards over the past ten years than all of its competitors combined. It includes magazines such as Vogue and Vanity fair. Bauer consumer media is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group. The group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations. Bauer consumer media is built on influential media brands with millions of personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. Bauer media reaches over nineteen million UK adults. They own more than 80 influential media brands spanning a wide range of interesting including Empire and TV quick. The mode of address is what we assume about the audience. The subject of my magazine will be presented in a varied way according to the target audience. The genre of my magazine is horror so it will include lots of dark colours such as black and red which has connotations of death and danger to match the genre of the magazine. ‘The hall of mirrors’ is a movie that will be the main feature of my magazine. One of the main characters in the movie will be on the front cover of the magazine. The main character of the movie will be the clown which dresses up in clothes to match her identity and blood all over her face. There will be sell lines surrounding the full bleed of the magazine which tells the reader what types of features are included inside. It will also promote other new releases of movies to capture the attention of a wider range of target audience. My colour scheme will be black, red, green and purple as they all have connotations of death and danger. The font of the masthead of the front cover will be big and bold so that it stands out and will be written in either red or green to match the genre of the main feature of the magazine. There will also be a contents page which will include pictures to show the consumer how the feature looks like so they have an idea. The contents page will help indicate the consumer to the pages of their choice/interest. It will also include big clear numbers beside the images so that the consumers know what page their selected feature is in quickly. My magazine will also include a double page spread which will include an interview with the main actresses of the movie. The double page spread will stick to the colour scheme of green, black, red and purple. Also it will include pop out quotes and pictures from the movie. Representation.
  • 4. Front cover analysis. The MASTHEAD for this magazine is ‘EMPIRE’. Empire is the name of the magazine and is a well-known film-magazine. This will attract collectors/consumers of the magazine to buy this issue. The word empire shares the meaning of domain or kingdom. The masthead is the main title of the magazine. Here they have used a big, bold, simple font and is in capital letters to make it eye catching. It has been outlined with a light green glow to make it stand out even more from the background. The black connotates darkness and evil which matches the genre of the film. Green is a gruesome colour & is used for the masthead to match the colour scheme of the joker who is the main image of the issue. The masthead is located on the top of the magazine which will not interfere the full-bleed. The MAIN SELL LINE for this magazine is ‘THE DARK NIGHT’ which is the name of the film. This is a way of advertising the movie and telling the target audience that the main feature of this magazine is focused on the new released movie. The lettering is spaced out to make it stand out more. The font is similar to the masthead; black, bold but simple, although they haven’t added the green outline so that the colour isn’t over used. It is also written in capital letters so it’s eye catching. It has used black again to stand out from the light background. The main sell line is placed underneath the masthead because it is an important part of the magazine. SELL LINES are used to tell the target audience what else is featured inside of the magazine. The sell lines which surround the main image, includes other features from different movies. This can appeal to a wider variety of target audience. The font used for the sell lines are more simple because they are less important but they still match the colour scheme of the front cover and is written in capital to make it stand out a bit more. Most of the sell lines are about advertising new releases of movies, information about the latest gossip and interviews with celebrities. The sell lines from other movies chosen have a similar genre to the main featured film. The BARCODE in the magazine is placed on the front cover instead of the back so that it will be easier to scan. It is placed in the bottom corner of the magazine because it is not as important. A barcode is included in a every magazine to allow the reader to purchase the magazine. Every magazine includes a MAIN IMAGE (full-bleed). The main image takes up the whole cover spread because it is very important. It Is important because this is what draws the initial interest of the target audience. The main image of this issue is of Heath Ledger which plays the role of the joker in the movie ‘The dark knight’. Everything else apart from his face is dark which has connotations of darkness and fear. This means that his face is the main focus of the main image. His facial expressions is very intriguing and scary looking. He is also looking straight into the camera and is taken as a close- up shot. This makes the target audience enticed to buy the issue. His make-up makes it very easy to identify his character. The red lips and dark circles around his eyes tells the target audience that his role is a joker. The red around his lips looks like blood which has connotations of murder, violence and danger. The hint of purple on the corner indicates what he is wearing. Purple is associated to royalty which could represent the feeling of dominance. The COLOUR SCHEME is green and black. This indicates that the magazine has been made to appeal to a male audience as they are masculine colours. The colour black has connotations of darkness, evil and danger. This has a resemblance to the type of genre of the film. Green is a primary colour & has connotations of nature and is a sickly colour, suggesting mental illness. This has a resemblance to the joker as the jokers hair is green and that is what makes him so recognizable. The DATE, ISSUE NUMBER AND PRICE is placed on top of the masthead and is written in a small font as it is not as important as the masthead or the sell lines. The date tells the target audience when it is released. Empire comes out monthly and the price of it costs £3.90. This is a fair amount to pay because as it is sold monthly, people are willing to pay that much every month to read the things they are interested in. The issue number is great for consumers who collect the magazine. The ELLIPSIS written underneath the main sell line creates more suspense which would make the target audience want to read more about it and will encourage them to buy the magazine. It is written in green and has the same font as the sell lines as it balances out the colour scheme of black and green from the main sell line. The SELL LINE ‘2 covers to collect’ is written at the top of the issue so that it stands out. This emphasizes the target audience that there are 2 issues to collect which will persuade them to buy the other one.
  • 5. Contents page analysis. The article preview shows the target audience a preview of how page looks like and can help them decide whether to read that page or skip it depending on the amount of writing. The article previews on this contents page are overlapping each other to give it a more edgy look and not make it look too boring. The cover feature is the main feature of the magazine which is most likely the reason why the consumer has decided to buy the it. The cover feature is the biggest picture you will see on the contents page as it is the most important feature in the magazine. It has got a clear heading of ‘25 years of terminator’ and has got numerous images of the pages to show the target audience how it looks like. The colour of the box is red which has connotations of danger, blood and death. This stands out from the rest of the features in the contents page. The text and colour scheme are very masculine to indicate that the magazine is targeted towards males. The text is written in black, simple writing as it is not as important as the subheadings written on top of it which is written in blue. This makes the text stand out from the plain, white background. The colour scheme is blue and white which both have connotations of peace and heaven. This makes the cover feature much more eye catching as the red stands out from the calm colours of blue and white. The subheadings are used to highlight the key features in the magazine. The subheadings are: features, regulars, in cinemas and at home. The font of the subheadings are in a bigger sized font compared to all the other fonts as it should stand out more so that the reader would know which section they would like to go to. The features indicates the reader straight to the article which captures their interest or attraction. The information next to the features tell the reader a brief description of the article to help them decide whether they would like to read it or not. It is written in a much smaller font as it is less important and not a lot of people would read it. The page numbers are written in bold writing beside it to indicate the reader to the page they want to read. The regulars are the articles that are including in every empire magazine. This is helpful for those who read the magazine often because it helps them to be indicated to the page quickly of their preferred choice. The issue number is located on the top right of the screen. This is great for people who collectors of the magazine. In cinemas section includes the new releases of movies coming out in the cinema. This gives the reader the chance to know what’s on so they can go see it with friends. This is great for mainstreamers who like to keep up with the latest gossip and want to fit in. At home section includes the new releases on DVD/Blu-ray, games, TV etc. This is also great for consumers who like to fit in with the crowd and catch up with the latest gossip. This gives the magazine a wider range of target audience as there is more variety of articles which more people could be interested in.
  • 6. Double page spread analysis. The title of this double page spread ‘the ten faces of the joker’ looks like letters cut out from other magazines. This relates to the actual film where he uses this technique to sign his letters. It is written in green which is a sickly colour, suggesting mental illness. The spray paint across both of the pages represents ‘rebellion’. It is in a pink/purple colour which is associated to royalty which could represent the feeling of dominance and is the colour scheme of the Jokers resemblance. The main images of this double page spread are of the joker from the movie which Is played by Heath Ledger. Here they do not focus on Heath Ledger as an actor but as his character, the joker to tell the target audience more about the film and it’s characters. Most of the images contain pictures from parts of comic books. This would attract more comic book readers. Most of the pictures take up the double page spread as people would be more interested in looking at the pictures instead of reading the text. The colour scheme includes a mixture of purples and greens which are both primary colors. The green is a gruesome colour which also has connotations of nature. Purple is a rich and cheeky colour which could resemble to the jokers personality. The use of handwriting used in the pull out quote ‘a visual history of the greatest comic book villains’ is also used in one of the teaser film posters ‘why so serious?’. This could lead the target audience to the disturbed character of the Joker. The text used in the double page spread is written in columns. It is written in black font to make it stand out from the white background in the size from around 10-12. It’s written in a simple font to make it easier to read. Some of the writing is written in boxes and is segregated from the other writing because it could be something different or more important. It is written inside boxes to make it stand out more and to make it more interesting for the target audience to read.

  • 10. Article draft EXCLUSIVE! INTERVIEW WITH EMILY PINKHAM AND VANESSA WANNER! The mega gorge, mega talented stars of the new release blockbuster horror ‘the hall of mirrors’ chats exclusively to SCREEN! They first appeared in our screens for the academy award winning movie, funhouse. After 3 years, Vanessa Wanner and Emily Pinkham are back and they are ready to hit your screens and wow you again with the thrilling new horror, hall of mirrors. It’s been a year since Vanessa Wanner and Emily Pinkham last spoke to SCREEN, and so much has been written and said about them in the meantime, we’re not really sure what to expect. They have both been very sweet in the past – chatting away with us and generally being normal as a celeb gets. But now that they are global award winning actresses will they still be the same, or have they changed? Within 10 seconds of walking into their hotel room, it’s clear that Vanessa and Emily are still as lovely as ever. Forget the LA superstar life they might lead, we’re talking to two down to earth girls from down town Chicago who still knows how to have a laugh. Fast forward 5 minutes and we’re having the best girlie chat ever. And the most amazing bit? Their managers called us afterwards to say how much they loved talking to SCREEN! Well, I would like to start off by congratulating you girls for your success in the past year. Last time you came on set, you girls were new comers to the movie industry. How does it feel to be global award winning actresses now? Emily – aw thank you so much! It’s crazy. It’s crazy how much could change in a year. It’s been such a roller coaster ride but I’m so blessed and thankful for everything that has happened in the past year. I’ve been able to work with so many amazing people and it has been such an amazing experience. That’s good to hear! So let’s talk about your new movie ‘The hall of mirrors’. Why would you recommend people to go and see it? Vanessa – Well…I would definitely recommend people to go watch this movie if they are into the horror type of film, obviously (Laughs) but yeah, it’s just simply amazing. Go see it! You won’t regret it! I’ve heard there has been some off screen romance between you and Zac Efron, Emily. Is this true? Emily – (Laughs) We’re just friends…I’m definitely too busy to be in a relationship right now. I think I need to be with someone who is very secure in themselves and could understand my schedule. So I’m going to be single for a while. No boys. (Laughs) You told your fans on twitter recently that you’ve been hurt a lot. Emily – Yeah that’s my problem. It’s always by the same person over and over again. I go through the same issues as every other teen girl – and that’s love and being hurt a million times. But at least you’ve got Vanessa to look after you. How was it like working with her? Emily – Aw I love Vanessa! She’s is like an older sister to me! She’s always there for me whenever I’m down and she puts a smile on my face. I’m so blessed to have her in my life and I’m so happy that we get to share this crazy experience together. As to all the readers, go check out Hall of mirrors coming out October 31st in cinemas.
  • 11. NAME IDEAS/MASTHEAD DESIGNS. Masthead designs NAME IDEAS CINEMAG POPCORN TAKE ONE! GET REEL! CINЀ FILMSTAR ACTIONSPOTLIGHT SCREEN NAME IDEAS CONTACT SHEET. - I decided to name my magazine Screen because it’s an appropriate word to use for a magazine towards movies as the word ‘screen’ is associated to film and movie. - For the masthead design, I decided to use a similar design as the full bleed and main sell line overflows the page with too much detail. Although I wanted to use fonts with a Halloween theme as my magazine is a Halloween edition.
  • 12. Target audience My target audience will be aimed towards both male and females aged 15-27. I have chosen the age range 15-27 because a high percentage of people around these ages would still be in school either doing their GCSE’s, A-level examinations or would be in college or university. Buying/reading my magazine can be an escape from the pressures of everyday life and take a break from all the stress of exams, homework etc. My target audience is aimed towards teenagers and young adults who are interested in the latest releases of blockbuster movies and who likes to read about celebrities. I want to balance out the segments of film promotion and celebrity interviews in the magazine so that it can be equally suitable for both genders to read. The contents page would be a big aspect in the magazine as the magazine will have sections which some people might want to skip. The contents page will be there if there is something in the magazine that the person would preferably not want to read. This will vary out the amount of content suitable for both genders equally. This gives the magazine a wider variety of target audience. I have chosen both males and females as the genders chosen for this magazine to aimed towards because the main feature of the issue. The main feature of this issue is about the new release of ‘Hall of mirrors’. This movie will be suitable for both genders as the main character of the movie is a well-known actress which teenage girls look up to and inspire to look like her and where she is every teenage boys dream. She will be on the main cover of the magazine and she will be featured inside the magazine along side another well-known movie star. They are global award winning actresses which means people would instantly know that it would be a good film. This would make the target audience want to buy the magazine as they would like to read more about the film which is the main feature of the magazine. My magazine is aimed towards all of the social classes but it is specifically aimed towards people in classes C1-D because most of the people in my age range which is 15-27 year olds are still in school, colleges, university or only just started working. They wouldn’t be earning a lot of money but would be able to afford to buy my magazine once every month as it comes out monthly. Also, my magazine will include some formal writing but not to a great extent; only up to an extent where people specifically in the age range from 15-27 year olds would be able to understand it and would be interesting for them to read it at the same time. The magazine will be aimed towards mainstreamers/conformists as they take up most of the consumers. These are the people who want to fit in with the crowd. My magazine would influence my target audiences personal relationship. Buying my magazine would keep them up to date with the latest information about celebrities and new releases of films which everyone else would like to go and see.
