FUTURARC PRIZE 2011
Back for its fourth year, FuturArc Prize, Asia’s leading international Green design competition
once again seeks to challenge the minds of architects and students studying the field to come
up with creative ideas for a sustainable future.
Competition Brief:
The 1000R Project | Living within our means
This year’s topic is about living within our means. The brief calls for a building design of any
type that relies on resources within a 1,000Ͳkilometre radius around the project site, which
should be located in Asia or Australia.
Dr Nirmal Kishnani, this year’s jury chair, elaborates, “This year’s FuturArc Prize brief is a call to
imagine how we will live in world of scarce resources and expensive fuel; a reversal of trends
from global to local living. As the world shrinks towards localised selfͲsufficiency, buildings
must change in form, materiality and operation. We are delighted once again to have a topͲ
notch jury, consisting of some of the top thinkers in the field of sustainable design. Our
expectation is that this year’s Prize will be given, as in past years, to entrants who surprise and
provoke us with visions of a brave new world.”

Supported by various Green building councils and architectural associations in AsiaͲPacific, the
competition is open from now till 15 December 2010.
Winners stand to win awards and cash prizes totalling up to SGD50, 000 sponsored by HP
Designjet Large Format Printers and Philips.
Judging will conclude by March 2011, after which, winners will be notified by the end of March
2011 to receive their trophies and prizes at the annual BCI Asia Awards ceremonies held in
May 2011 in seven cities; Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand
and Vietnam.

About the Jury Panel
Nirmal Kishnani, PhD, is Chief Editor of the FuturArc Journal. He is an advocate, educator and
practitioner in the field of Green building design, presently with the Department of
Architecture at the National University of Singapore where holds the appointment of Senior
Lecturer and Programme Director of the Master of Science in Integrated Sustainable Design.
He has lectured and written widely on the subject of Green design process. Since 2002—when
he founded one of the first dedicated Green design consultancy operating in Asia—he has
consulted for many projects and organisations including the Asian Development Bank and
United Nations Environment Programme. Dr Kishnani sits on several advisory panels in

Southeast Asia, active in the development of policy instruments and capacity building in the
Green building industry. Dr. Kishnani is Jury Chair of FuturArc Prize 2011 and also a juror for
the Emerson Cup 2010.
Ray Cole, PhD, is the Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the
University of British Columbia and Academic Director of the School’s Design Center for
Sustainability. Dr Cole was selected as a North American Association of Collegiate Schools of
Architecture Distinguished Professor for “sustained commitment to building environmental
research and teaching” in 2001. In 2003 he received the Architectural Institute of British
Columbia Barbara Dalrymple Memorial Award for Community Service and the US Green
Building Council’s Green Public Service Leadership Award.
Peter Head, OBE FREng FRSA, is a Director in Arup (UK) where he heads a global team for
planning and integrated urbanism. He is project director for the planning and development of
the Dongtan EcoͲcity demonstrator on Chongming Island in Shanghai, and the Wanzhuang EcoͲ
City in LangFang near Beijing. He was featured in the October 2008 issue of Time magazine,
nominated as one of 30 global ecoͲheroes. In that same year, he was awarded the Sir Frank
Whittle Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering for his efforts to deliver an
environmentally sustainable built environment. Peter is also strategic adviser to the Chair of
the C40 Large Cities and Climate Leadership Group and the Clinton Carbon Positive
Programme.
Kazuo Iwamura, M.E. is a Professor in the Faculty of Urban Life studies at the Tokyo City
University in Tokyo Japan and CEO of IWAMURA Atelier, Inc. He is also UIA ViceͲpresident
representing Region IV (Asia & Oceania), Director of the UIA Work Programme Architecture for
a Sustainable Future Region IV, Chair of ARCASIA’s Committee for Green & Sustainable
Architecture, and a member of the board of the World Green Building Council
Jimmy Priatman, M.Arch is Chairman of the Center for Building Energy Study Petra Christian
University and the Principal Architect of ArchiͲMetric, PT. He completed a Masters degree at
the college of architecture of the Illinois Institute of Technology in the United States and
designed the 110th Energy efficient multiͲuse skyscraper ''The Cityfront Tower'' in Chicago as
his thesis project. He promotes green building and energyͲsaving concepts for his projects. He
won the Asean Energy Award in 2002,2006 and 2009 from the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE),
for the Graha Pangeran, Grha Wonokoyo and Holy Stadium Project, which use only 88
kwh/m2/year, far below ACE standard of 200kWh/m2/year for office building.

About the Competition
The FuturArc Prize was launched in 2007 by the BCI Group of Companies through its
publication arm, FuturArc Journal, to seek out innovative Green building designs for sites in
AsiaͲPacific.
The Competition has two objectives: first, to create a platform for talented individuals—
professionals and students—who are keen on environmental issues; second, to encourage the
construction industry as a whole to move towards sustainable design.
